New pup to two cats

Post by emmab »

We dearly would love to adopt a pup. It would have to be a pup as we have two cats. The cats do not get on, although they are marginally better these days. I know one of the cats will get on with the dog and we know the pup gets on with cats and have a good rapport at the moment but the other cat (female) hates the other cat and will probably hate the dog. Are we being unfair bringing a new pup into the house. Pups are always better as we can bring it up to be well disciplined around the cats and chickens but do not want her to be a nervous wreck.

Just because the cats don't get on doesn't mean either of them won't be fine with a dog just give the cats safe indoor space using a dog crate or baby gates never let a puppy chase the cats or intimidate them and keep feeding times safe and peaceful and above all don't let the cats vote with their feet and stay outside carry them in if you have to as its their home first they must not feel they don't belong anymore , all handled carefully and you should be fine with your new doggie addition
