Cat hissing after i stroked a visitor cat

Post by loumoo »

Hello there and apologies for the long title.
Basically I have a cat, she is the only one now [after her sister had to be pts a few months or more ago].
Anyway she is timid, like that when we got them at 7 months. She is affectionate and trusting now, bar the wariness.
However we have visiting cats one who is a big male, but laid back and doesn't chase her or anything. He is a big softy, been stroking him in the garden. I come in and go to stroke my cat [Fry] and she hissed at me, when I went to stroke her.

I had washed my hands after stroking the other one, as I was handling food.

She came to me and sat on my lap, then all seemed well again.

Anyone know why she might've hissed, was it due to stroking the visitor cat ot maybe an underlying issue?

Hi, sounds like she could still smell him on you - their sense of smell is amazing - did he rub against you as she'd probably smell him on your clothes too ... I too would put it down to that, even though you'd washed your hands. Animals eh?

I once pulled apart some cold turkey ... hours and a few handwashings later I happened to bring a corn snake out for garden walkies (my garden's not just catproofed but snakeproofed.) She wasn't interested in the garden; she homed in on my hands and tried to eat one of my fingers! Ouch! :o

Animals have sensitivities that we humans can only barely visualise ... hope she's been ok since with you :)

Yeah the other cat rubbed his head against my leg, hes a big softie. Not sure if he belongs to someone, he is my garden A LOT. Maybe due to knowing im a sucker or hes attached. With Fry being hissy and him being greedy..Not a good idea for an unneutered cat to come in.

Shes been fine since, usual self.

Hiya, there is no underlying issue. Cats hissing if they smell something strange is perfecty normal. Just their way of sayng 'hey..what's that, not sure I like it', but they forget about it 5 mins later, as the smell fades. Fry knows you are her human, just making sure you don't forget. Speaking of smells, if my dear husband does not stop leaving opened jars of yucky horseradish sauce lying open on the dinner table, I'm going to hiss loudly at him!

Ohhh noooo, a hissy Issi??? :o

Try just a dab of horseradish in white crabmeat or just tuna, in a brown bread sarnie, with mayo and butter ... divine ... :D

If Gandhi will allow of course :o

Yes, a hiss is often just conversational. I remember buying a Siamese kitten; on her first night, lonely without her littermates, everything strange, smells strange, she still trusted me enough to want to sleep on my shoulder, but if I made the slightest movement - ssssshaaaahhhh! She grew into a very placid and confident cat :)

Ha I missed this bit and read a hissy Issi, chuckled.
I wouldn't mind another cat, but not sure how she would take it. Being timid and wary, but extremely affectionate with us humans now. Still timid or wary more like sometimes. [she is small, maybe the runt? not socialised enough?].
The Vet suggested a younger one of a few years who is placid etc and not greedy!! haha

I have fed and petted/picked up this adorable massive tom cat. He is part tabby and white. He loves being handled and belly stroked, so far Fry hasnt hissed since that time. So maybe there could be a companion if he doesn't belong to anyone, although he may be one of those cats who has many homes. Although he is at mine A LOT, compared to the other greedy visitor. He is hungry all the time. Also loves affection though. Follows me everywhere now outside.

Hmmmm ... if Fry allows, sounds like you might have a new cat ...

There's a link on here - https://www.catchat.org/index.php/cat-m ... lost-found

The usual precautions, but sounds like he's adopting you, would be great if Fry allows him in as new friend :)
