Gorgeous, gorgeous boys! Mikey is such a lucky chap to have you and as for the lovely Joey... if only my OH would let me have another cat, I'd have him tomorrow as a playmate for H.

The biting thing may well calm down once he's stopped teething. H went through a terrible patch of biting us and the furniture at about 6 to 7 months old. He still gives the odd nip now but it is definitely out of love not anger. We got back from Le Mans last Tuesday and picked him up to say Hello. Next minute he's sunk his teeth into my hand and is sucking for England. I really don't think he liked being left with Boris for the week.

Keep the updates coming.

Awww Shirl....lovely video of my other little man :-).

Catsue - Joey IS as lovely as he looks but he is a little b****r at times too!lol. You saw him nibbling Shirleys fingers....well when he gets into real 'play bite' mode he bites hard!...and so if he's on your knee and you take your hand away he sinks his little fangs into your knee...and last night when he turned his head he even bit my boob! He is adorable but as I said a little devil too...but apart from that bad habit (which could be teething and I'm hoping he'll grow out of)he is a very good boy and is quite happy playing on his own...he just loves his little felt mouse and will play for ages with it. Thats will definately have to go with him to his new home!lol
Faye - you're welcome anytime hun.....but I reckon you're gonna have your hands full at home for a while!lol (Fayes just fostering 5 x7wk old kittens for us from tonight!!)
SueCav - I LOVE to see Mikey running chasing that toy....I think its the nearest thing he has to being a 'normal cat'....running and chasing something... and its so good to see him stimulated and enjoying himself.

That said he has been a VERY lucky boy tonight as Denise came over and had a chinese and Mikey stayed with us in the conservatory and sat between us on the sofa when we were having a chat, then had a bit of a play when we were eating....then took himself back to the sofa and curled up in a little ball and went to sleep. He had 5 hours in the conservatory today so 5 solid hours of company! (I did then let Joey have the final hour in there with us so he could have a good run about too :-) ).

Thankfully now they are all put to bed....which is exactly where I am heading.....nite all x

Had another visit to Heather's today to see Mikey and Joey, her other foster cat! He is just GORGEOUS! So fussy and loves playing with his toys! Can't believe he hasn't been snapped up yet!
I took a video of him, but it's a bit long,(3 and a bit minutes!) so may not work again(thank God my Dean's home next weekend!) It will take 2 hours and 10 minutes to upload (!!!!!!!!!!- there MUST be a better way!)

Mikey was his usual happy self, tho didn't want to know me-he was too busy waiting for his mom to come out,lol Heather took him round the run in his harness, while i videoed (hope it's ok!)She tried to get a nappy on him but, half way through, he decided he didn't want that, so he stayed outside while we had a cuppa!

Hi Bee - welcome to CC and thank you for your kind comments about Mikey....you are right it is tough at times but we're managing to tick along ok...the biggest thing that weighs so heavy on my heart is the amount of time he spends on his own as he is in a pen and cannot be in the house all the time because of my own cats(I'm just fostering Mikey). He just loves company and no matter how much time I try and give him I just know its not really enough :-(. He does have wheels but its not proving that easy to get him in and using them so its going to be a long term project that one!lol. In the meantime I take him out on a daily basis for a run around the garden using a rear support harness which he really loves....if you would like to see the video then here's a link to his rehoming page to save you trawling back through this rather long thread!lol

http://rspca-stourbridge.comlu.com/pages/mikey/mikey.html

To be honest as of yet I haven't had any problems with sores on his feet or legs but I am very conscious that thay may come and have been wondering the best way to protect them so I appreciate the advice on what worked for you. That said I have literally just noticed 2 tiny cirles (one on each foot - literally only a couple of mm in diameter)that are just starting to look a bit thin so I do need to keep and eye on them.

LOL Julia.....it does look a bit like a tranatula....but its actually a Valerian Octopus (apparently lol) whcih is why he loves it so much because its full of valerian root (so you were right Shirl!lol)

Sue D -lol thank you re my nails. They aren't normally looking that nice (as previous vids are probably testimony too!lol)but I had the week off after the bank holiday and the one thing I did for 'myself' was to go and have my nails done. Having a 'french'gel overlay is just the best because it lasts for ages and doesn't chip....normal nail polish on my hands doesn't even last 24hrs!lol

Sue-Cav - the new roof is great! Its made it so light and airy in there and gives good protection from the sun to those little pink nose and ears :-) x

Lovely vids Heather, nice for Mikey to have some snooze time snuggled up to you. I have to say he's rather enamoured with the leopard print octopus thing, I think it would frightened the c**p out of me as it looks a bit like a tarantula!!!!

Heather, I'm new the site but just had to comment on Mikey. We too had a paralysed cat - just happened literally overnight. Xrays revealed some bone density changes (this cat was 19 years old when the problem started) putting pressure on the spinal cord. We managed for over a year - sometimes it was tough as he was also incontinent. Have not read through all your posts (believe Mikey has a trolley?) but do you still get any problems with 'wear and tear' on the fur on his back legs? We got round that with the self-adhesive bandages (commonly used by horses)which were changed daily.

I would just like to send you all my support as some people are not supportive of this kind of problem - your wonderful and Mikey looks happy and fabulous.

Well Mikeys pen did get a roof this weekend :-). In fact we just got it finished on sunday before the heavens opened!

Today I got home from work early but still had some stuff to read so I decided to pop him in a nappy and bring him into the conservatory again....we both had such a lovely time.....after a little play I popped him up onto the sofa with me where he snuggled down for a sleep....here's the vids ;-). A bit later on when I'd done my work I curled up on the sofa and had a snooze and he joined me again bless him....

Hi All....well what a week...I had to go away with work for a couple of days and leave the OH in charge of feeding the cats and looking after Mikey!! Having written 'war and peace' in cat feeding instructions he did manage ok but I don't think they got fed the correct thing at the correct time...but they did GET fed which I guess is the main thing!lol. Leaving instructions for feeding 6 cats who all want different things at different times and 2 of which have raw meat which needs to be defrosted and thought about in advance makes going away for the night like preparing for a military operation!lol.

The weather this week has made it difficult too because the rain has just meant that Mikeys pen has been getting soaked (even though I'd rigged up a bit of a cover) so on tuesday morning I was in Wickes at 8am to buy a larger tarpaulin which I was up the ladder hauling across the top of the pen on my own in the pouring rain before getting ready for work! I was drenched and cussing!lol....but I thought 'I wanted this run up in time specifically so he wouldn't be cooped up in his pen for 2 days whilst I am away and I'm damn well gonna make sure he can use it!lol. So.....it was all worth it in the end as it did do the job but it has made me realise it needs a proper felted roof so if the weather is ok tomorrow guess what we're doing??!!lol

Cheryl-Anne...thank you for your kind comments and the link to your article...it made interesting reading....Mikey is a foster cat and I am still hopeful that one day we will find that special home for him where he can have an even fuller life than I can give him here...

Catsue - lol....yes he is getting nearer and nearer isn't he! With my four though I just couldn't keep him permenantly. It will be incredibly difficult to let him go if the right home comes forward as I obviously have built up the most amazing bond with him...but that said he will build that with someone new and I so want him to be with someone that can give him far more time and company than I will ever be able to do with working full time and having four of my own to look after. I know I have done a lot to try and give him the best quality of life but what he REALLY needs is company and I won't ever be able to give him as much of that as he needs and deserves....so when the time comes I will let him go....even though it will be hard...and no doubt a few tears will be shed!lol

Shelley - I have thought about whether I could introduce another cat but I have reservations on several levels. The first one being Mikey is really naughty with other cats. He stalks mine in the garden and rushes at them (he might be disabled but he's still mega quick when he wants to be!)and they are frightened of him...they have come into direct contact on a couple of occassions and its not been pretty! I do think Mikey is just wanting to play but he doesn't seem to know the right way of going about it. The other thing is - if I did manage to find and introduce a suitable playmate what would happen if that got rehomed sooner (which is likely)...would Mikey pine for his new friend? If they stayed together and went as a pair then that would obviuosly be lovely but its a big ask to take on a disabled cat let alone 2 cats (with one being disabled)....so if a home for 2 didin't come forward is it fair to keep another healthy cat cooped up in a pen indefinately just to keep Mikey company? As you can see, I have done quite a bit of thinking about it, but these reservations have prevented me so far from actually doing it!lol Its not something I've ruled out completely but I'm not sure just yet if its the right thing to do....

Gill - YAY!! Way to go Mikey!!!! My little star :-) xx

Heather,

I own a national cat rescue (www.chapelhouse-persians.co.uk) and although I have used Cat Chat for our rehoming for many years, I have only today found the forum.

I wanted to commend you on your incredible care and dedication to this paralysed animal and wish you great success with him. You have done what any loving cat owner should do - persist and show commitment. Sadly, many don't. Well done indeed.

Out of interest I attach here a link to an article I published, which relates to incontinence in paralysed and nerve-damaged cats. Other people who clearly know less than you do, could maybe find it interesting.

Heather, I've been following Mikey's story and would like to commend you for all that you've done for him. It takes a special human being to give that much love and care to a animal in need.

I get tears in my eye's watching Mikey's videos, but then I realize that he has moved on and is not dwelling about his infirmity - thanks to you.

I have been wondering about his solidarity in his pen - I know at first it was due to hygene but now that you have his bowels under control could you not move another baby in with him so he can have some company?

Can't wait to se more pics and I'm very excited for Mikey about some wheels. He's such a beautiful, special little man!

Well its been a day of '1sts' for MIkey today!

I decided to let him out of his run into his 'safe' area on his own to shuffle about without the harness on. I blocked it off so that he couldnt get down the side of the shed where it would be very rough on his undercarriage...I just thought it would be nice for him to be able to do what he wanted for a while without the feeling of any confinment...and he did seem to enjoy himself:

His second 1st (lol!) was he came into the house tonight! Well...the conservatory...my cats would have a problem with him being in the main house but it was lovely to be able to sit and watch a bit of telly knowing he was still getting some company! So...I bought some 'huggies' and cut a tail hole and then we were away! He got on really well as the wooden floor was really easy for him to slide over and because there was no 'drag' the nappy stayed put!! So he had a good hour in there just zooming around and stopping for the occasional sprawl and wash and brush up! I of course captured this historic moment for you all on video :-)
I then suddenly thought 'hang on its all gone very quiet where is he??' I got up and walked around but couldn't see him and thought he must be under the sofa....which I went and sat back down on...only to then spot him under the dining table on top of the dining chairs!!I tell you...there's no stopping him! there he was stretched out as happy as larry, and I thought 'Oh thats lovely' until I spotted the nappy on the floor(which hadn't survived what must have been an almighty big heave ho to get onto the chair)and then I thought 'EEkkk!! My lovely cream (and expensive) dining chairs!!!'

Needless to say he was scooped up pretty quick and in the absence of letting me put the nappy back on he was unfortunately deposited back to his pen.....still it was a good first outing, and proved that there is hope that he could live in a house with wooden flooring quite comfortably :-) x
