Tolstoy-special needs RESERVED
We are looking for a very special home for Tolstoy.

Tolstoy is a six month old neutered kitten who was rescued with his mum and sisters in the garden he was born in. His mum has found a permanent sanctuary home ,and his sisters were adopted together a month ago. After a life-saving operation it is time for feisty Tolstoy to find his forever home.

Unbeknownst to us on his arrival, Tolstoy would have a very short painful life ahead of him had he remained in the streets. During his vet check and after observation while being fostered we realised his rectal passage was tiny and always blocked to the extent that the pressure of what was in his colon to come out was such that his whole abdominal area felt like a giant tumour. It was all compacted faeces…He had a severely deformed colon and rectal area that without intervention would be painfully fatal. We had him under sedation four times to perform a special kind of enema technique that dislodged all of the “backlog” and made him comfortable and bouncy again. Seeing him lively again made it clear : his zest for life was there, so we could not watch him wilt away without trying to find a permanent cure.

After consulting referral specialists across the country for a solution, it became clear that Tolstoy essentially needed a new lower digestive system and a new rectum. With donations from our caring community and through the kindness of those who saw our appeal through social media, Tolstoy had a life saving operation in mid July. Since his operation Tolstoy has remained on a diet of sensitive wet food along with daily doses of lactulose and cisapride. He has needed a few more enemas since his operation, however recently things have been going well and his ‘diary’ has most certainly been a cause of celebration to see him pass stools naturally. Tolstoy will need to remain under the regular care of a vet for some time to come, perhaps for his life time. We would be happy to see him remain a patient at The Catcuddles Cat Clinic in N13, of course our head vet can liaise with a new vet if his forever home is not within travelling distance.

Tolstoy is most in need of an experienced, understanding home who recognise the challenge ahead, and who are able and willing to put in the time to make Tolstoy part of the family. Tolstoy is first and foremost a kitten, he needs to be socialised, to be played with and to be loved. He also needs to have a home who are not fazed by his health needs and supportive of whatever lies ahead for him. Tolstoy is very food orientated and due to this and the fact he’s now grown accustomed to life as a solo kitty he is looking for a home where he will be the only pet.

Tolstoy could live in a home with a catproofed garden, or in a spacious home with a fully catproofed balcony, secured terrace or catio. If Tolstoy’s forever home has a private back garden he will need to have access through a catflap. We require all cats who go out to have a caflap at the back of the property so that they have easy access back into the home. If not already in place, this can be fitted within a month of adoption and we would recommend a microchip cat flap. If the home has a balcony this must be fully catproofed within four weeks of adoption.

Tolstoy will need an adopter who is emotionally and financially comfortable to cover all costs relating to this pre-existing condition, alongside taking out insurance for any other eventuality. Tolstoy’s forever human(s) in time will be rewarded with love and friendship from their new furry best friend. Tolstoy has been through a lot in his short life and we at Catcuddles want to ensure anyone adopting him will be in a position to absolutely commit to offering Tolstoy a home for the rest of his life. Adopting a cat like Tolstoy will be an extremely rewarding experience for the right person and, Catcuddles will always be by your side for advice.

Our priority is to match felines with homes that suit their needs, character and long term requirements. Please be aware that when a particular cat receives an unusually high volume of enquiries, our dedicated adoptions volunteers may only be able to pursue the most promising. We appreciate your understanding.
