Rehoming Cats & Kittens: Derbyshire & South Yorkshire
Oliver
Oliver had been living rough in a garden for some months before coming to us.  He was unneutered and grubby, and had a fine collection of ear mites.  He was clearly relieved to be indoors and to be warm and dry.   We think he was probably kicked out the house by his previous family.  It's a very common story that cats are wanted as kittens but then when they get old enough to need to be neutered and start smelling or spraying they're thrown out.   He's refused to leave his bedroom in rescue, even when invited, as though he fears going out the door may mean he's never allowed back.

UPDATE 4 January:  This handsome chap is now reserved for adoption

He's been neutered now and the tom cat smell is gone.  He's cleaned himself up and his coat is soft and shiny again.  He's also been vaccinated and microchipped and treated for fleas and worms.  The ear mites are almost gone and he's back for another nurse check of them after Christmas.  Apart from the mites there were no health issues found at his vet check.

Oliver is a very loving boy who will need a bit of time and patience to help him settle and build his confidence in people again.  He loves his cuddles and purrs loudly.  However he still feels obliged to hiss when I walk into his room and takes a while of getting on and off my lap until he feels he can trust it and settle.  It's been lovely to see him gradually grow more confident with this over the few weeks he's been here.   He wasn't at all sure about playing when he first arrived but now he's getting the hang of it again and loved his Christmas toys.

He'd probably be happiest in a quieter home where any children are old enough to give him space and time to settle.  It's not been possible to introduce him to children whilst in rescue due to covid.   He may be ok with another friendly easy going cat, he's not shown any signs of aggression when other rescue cats have put their head round his bedroom door but they've not had any prolonged contact.

He'll need to be kept securely indoors for at LEAST A MONTH on arrival in his new home.  After that, and when he's more confident, he may enjoy having a secure garden to explore, well away from any busy roads.  We do require adopters to keep cats indoors during hours of darkness though ... for their own safety and that of local wildlife .. and to have access to an indoor litter tray at all times.

All our adoptions bring 4 weeks free insurance through Pet Plan.

We always homecheck prior to adoption, and ask a minimum donation of £75 for each adult neutered cat.. There’s more about our adoption process here: http://www.8livescatrescue.org/adoption-process.html and there's info about how we've adapted the process in light of Covid here: https://8livescatrescue.com/2020/11/21/adapting-and-adopting/
