Madigan (FIV+) - RESERVED
Madigan was rescued living as an unneutered stray. We were alerted to Madigan’s plight by a Reverend who was seeking help for one of his parishioners. The parishioner had been feeding a stray cat with a visible eye injury for some time, but was due to enter hospital and feared for the cat’s wellbeing in her absence.

Estimated to be five years old, sweet, gentle Madigan had a ruptured eye, which had caused a thick crust to form over the socket. Sadly, there was no possibility of saving his eye, hence surgery to remove it took place. In spite of the severe pain he has been in, Madigan is friendly and cheerful, purring even when being examined by our vet. Some day soon he will make a wonderful feline companion to someone in a loving home.

Madigan may look like he has been in the wars but this lovely boy is recovering from an eye enucleation, suspected to be as a result of trauma. He will be having his post-surgery check up in the coming week and a plan will be made regarding his gingivitis and what dental treatment he will require at this stage.

As his recovery progresses, Madigan is looking forward to finding a loving forever home of his own so he can put his time living as a stray behind him and start enjoying home comforts and the guarantee of a full bowl of food every day!

Inevitably Madigan has tested FIV positive. This is not uncommon for unneutered strays who get into fights. It should not affect his quality of life, however we recommend FIV+ cats live in indoor-only homes or have a completely secured/contained outdoor space as this will protect them from catching other infections.

Madigan is not quite ready to leave us but we will be looking for a spacious adult-only home for him, preferably with some fully catproofed outside space such as a balcony or terrace, where Madigan can be the only pet in the home.

Anyone adopting an indoor cat from us needs to be committed to creating a stimulating and enriching indoor environment and ensuring it is safe, i.e. cat proofing any windows that will be opened, and fully cat proofing a balcony, terrace or garden if there is one. When catproofing a balcony this means ensuring it is fully enclosed, not permitting access is not usually sufficient. If their family are using the balcony, the cat should also be able to and whilst a cat will not jump if there is nowhere to go, accidents can and do happen so this is essential to do to ensure the safety of your adopted cat. The adoptions team can offer further advice on this.

FIV, or Feline Immunodeficiency Virus, is a much-misunderstood virus believed to effect 2.5-4.4% of cats globally. In the past, cats that have tested positive for FIV have been euthanised, but the more we learn about this condition the more apparent it has become that FIV cats can live happy and comfortable lives. The virus has a very slow effect on a cat's immune system, potentially weakening it over several years, and sometimes making that cat more vulnerable to secondary infections in the long-term. Every cat's immune response is different however, and  the right environment is the key to maintaining good health in an FIV cat; a balanced diet and a happy and suitable home. Many FIV positive cats live into their senior years. You can read more about FIV+ and visit some recommended resources here.

Before submitting an adoption enquiry it is important to ensure that you have read our adoption info page: Adopting a cat from Catcuddles.

No matter what their age, all adopted cats leave Catcuddles with trial insurance and this is important to take out. For our FIV+ kitties the trial insurance is with Agria and if a policy is purchased within the trial period then you’ll be able to take out a policy for lifetime cover to cover any new conditions that may occur in the future.

Madigan is being fostered at our rehoming hub in Abbey Wood, SE2.

Our priority is to match felines with homes that suit their needs, character and long term requirements. Please be aware that when a particular cat receives an unusually high volume of enquiries, our dedicated adoptions volunteers may only be able to pursue the most promising. We appreciate your understanding.
