Rehoming Cats & Kittens: West Midlands
Zena & Zeus

We are Zena (female, black) & Zeus (Male, tabby) and we are bonded siblings looking for a special home together.

We came into the sanctuary back in January this year after our owner surrendered us as unfortunately we were too much for the resident house rabbit in the home. Our previous owner rescued us as blind kittens from Bosnia in desperate need of a safe home. We are only very young and have already had a number of places we would call home so we are now hoping we can find our permanent forever home.

We are both completely blind and since being at the sanctuary have now successfully had two eye surgeries. Our vet found that our eye sockets had not properly developed and so we were born blind. Having our eye surgeries was the best option for us to avoid long term problems such as infections and other further complications.

The main question many people that don’t know us or know anything about blind cats in general ask is how do we cope? The perfect answer our carer gives to that question is "AMAZINGLY WELL!". We are just like any other cat or kitten! We are full of life and DESERVE to keep our life because being blind does not stop us from being HAPPY, healthy, playful, energetic and loving kittens. We obviously do have limitations due to being blind but most of the activities that are important to us are still very possible. We learn to adapt so well and use our other senses to their full capacity! We love our meal times and treats, we love toys and play time, we love cuddles when we want them and we love to cuddle and sleep together in a warm bed. What else does a cat want for?

I (Zeus) or zeusy as my main carer often calls me am more outgoing than my sister Zena. I like to interact that bit more with my carers and I am quite nosy and cheeky! I am super inquisitive too. I do love cuddles and I am a very affectionate boy and have a big loud purr too! I do also have a cheeky side and like to nibble my carers hands in a playful interested way. My sister Zena does this a little too but not as much as me. Due to us having no sight we like to feel things using our mouths. I do also use my paws to feel my carers and often end up clawing at them gently! My sister Zena is a bit more reserved and independent than me. She does enjoy affection and cuddles on her terms and will sometimes roll over and show off her belly which is very cute. Zena does have a feisty side although she is never aggressive towards our carers. It is mostly towards me as I can be an annoying brother at times and we have our squabbles! Our carer thinks this will calm down in a home though when we eventually have more space than the room we currently reside in at the sanctuary. We do love each other really! We often snuggle up closely together in our bed at night time and we do play nicely together at times. We are very bonded so must stay together!

We may not be able to see but we can hear, smell, touch and taste, so utilising these senses we do have for daily enrichment and stimulation is really important for us! We are both still only kittens and absolutely love to play! We love interactive play, noisy toys that squeak and jingle and crinkly balls which are probably our favourite! We love feathery toys due to their texture and also enjoy scented toys with catnip and valerian. Sounds, texture and scent are important!

A potential adopter must be prepared to understand our long terms needs and considerations must be made. Blind cats like us find our way around using our whiskers and rely on scent markings from our bodily glands. We will need a safe home environment and be allowed to settle and find our own way around. It is important that in our new home furniture and daily essentials are kept in the same place and position and be easily accessible. This will be discussed in further with a potential adopter/s. We would much prefer a home where someone is around enough for us for company.

Whilst at the sanctuary we have met another cat supervised to see how we reacted. We were okay around them for a bit as we seemed quite interested but then they got too much for us especially for my sister Zena as she got a bit stressy and hissy around them. Our carer thinks we may be okay in time with a more placid cat that will give us our space but would also be happy to play if we wanted too. Our carer ideally wants to find us a home as the only pets in the home however would not completely rule out another cat for the right home. This would be dependant on the potential adopters experience of cat ownership (in particular any experience with blind cats), space in the home and the temperament of the existing cat in the home. We cannot live with dogs. We could live in a home with small animals as long as we are not mixed with them and they are kept separate from us at all times.

We MUST be strictly indoor cats for the obvious reason that we are completely blind and it is not safe for us to be outdoors. The only sort of outdoor access that would be acceptable would be in the form of a fully secure catio or a properly cat proofed garden however this is not essential. A potential adopter must have window and door provisions in place prior to an adoption for our safety.
