NORTH EAST ENGLAND Spaying 2 boys (1 who seems poorly)

Hi all. Haven't been on here for a while. New situation is related to two unneutered males in our neighbourhood. (they look SO alike, we did not realised that they were two cats until last month) So. Cat 1 used to live next door. He's quite flighty. New baby meant he effectively moved out (they are ...

Re: Is she excited or stressed?

Hahahahaaa! Lilith you've just made me belly laugh! The POUNDing is sooooo familiar. Feels like I am being punched in the stomach. It could be excitement for attention as their previous owner had them for 6 yrs and wasn't a cat person so I don't think they had much attention. Both are quite needy in...

Is she excited or stressed?

Hi All I have my two new 11 y/o cats for 2 months now. Suffice to say I love them both huge amounts. They are settling in OK. The bigger of the two - nicknamed "Booler" on account of her size & the fact that she just barges her way through life - appears very animated. She talks as soo...

Re: New cats - little being aggressive to large

Thanks Lillith! Just wandered upstairs to see how they are and the pair of them are sleeping on the same cat bed - a tiny wee bed for 1 kitty! So maybe I'll just keep an eye out. Can't believe how much I love them and it's only been a week! We lost our darling Portia recently and although I miss her...

New cats - little being aggressive to large

Hi All I posted recently about my two new arrivals: Darla and Dusty (thought to be 11 y/o sisters but my guess is mother (Dusty) & daughter (Darla). We've had them for a week They came as a pair and are often very affectionate to each other, cleaning each other, giving head butts and curling up ...

Re: Newly adopted and in nead of a health check

Thanks both! D & D weren't in the custody of Cats Protection as there was no room, sadly. They were with the owner, who was liaising with CP to get them rehomed. From what I can tell, our local CP (like many) just cannot manage demand at the moment. NO obvious signs of illness at the present - t...

Newly adopted and in nead of a health check

Hi All Our lovely Portia was put to sleep recently and we have adopted two new cats, Darla and Dusty. Their exact age is unknown - guess is 11 y/o. We brought them home last night to their bonding room and they seem to be settling in fine (Dusty being a wee bit shy in comparison to Darla). The woman...

Re: Renal failure - terminal or treatable?

Thanks Crewella and meriad. That first link has given me so much hope and I will read the second link tonight. We have just got back from the vets with our second opinion - from the same vet! After explaining Portia's current behaviour and eating/drinking, she agreed that we have to try treatment. W...

Re: Renal failure - terminal or treatable?

Hi all - thanks for all of the responses so far. A wee update. Apart from being slightly more cat-nappy and the weight loss, she is doing ok. She is eating a little, drinking, cuddling and purring and frankly I think with the right treatment, she may feel better. I have been researching the illness ...

Re: Renal failure - terminal or treatable?

Oh yes we stopped the metacam last week. We bought 8 different types of food, all of which she rejected except her first love tuna, which is obviously protein rich but the vet said that it is good she is interested in some food.

Renal failure - terminal or treatable?

Hi All We have had some bad news from our vet. Portia has kidney failure and our vet said she is so ill she should be "put to sleep". She is 15 years old and over the last 6 weeks her weight has halved. She has been on Metacam for over a year and over the last month she has gone from "...

Re: Behaviour changes - loss of balance, shaking head etc...

Hi, He did a v thorough examination (and she was sooooo good!) and checked her ears, eyes, reflexes, listened to her heart, checked vital organs etc. He thinks there is no sign of a brain tumour but if the episodes continue, we will ask for a scan of her brain. She's in cracking health generally and...

UPDATE: Behaviour changes - loss of balance, shaking head et

Just arrived home from the vets to be told that Portia has Vestibular Syndrome. She is already taking Metacam and Seraquin for her joint problems and Vet said that we should continue in with this in the hopes that it reduces inflammation in her brain. Can anyone tell me of their experience with Vest...

Re: Behaviour changes - loss of balance, shaking head etc...

Thanks for replying so quickly! We tried to look into her ears but it caused her more distress, leading me to think she has an ear infection. She was briefly outside and after a flock of birds flew over squawking, she had another episode so we think it is her ears that are the problem. I don't under...

Behaviour changes - loss of balance, shaking head etc...

Hi all My cat Portia (14 y/o) has had 2 episodes of unusual behaviour this weekend. She appears to lose her balance then shakes her head. She seems to be looking at <something> moving very quickly or loses her eyesight all together (her pupils become dilated). Both times she has started to run aroun...

Re: Cat terminally ill - what do we ask the vet?

I've been reflecting on Cleo's death. I believe we made the right decision, but I wish I'd known that the injection administered would be the one where she died. I thought it was the sedative as she was so irate and I did not want her final moment to be one where she was fearful or in pain. I know t...

Re: Cat terminally ill - what do we ask the vet?

Hi All, Cleo passed away at 18:00 UK time. I spent 2 hours with her at my Mam's after work and she was her usual, stroppy and affectionate self, except clearly struggling to walk. We had big cuddles and fusses. The vet was a very kind, gentle man. He advised that now was the right time to say goodby...

Re: Cat terminally ill - what do we ask the vet?

An update and more questions :((( Cleo is no longer eating, is sipping a little water but is mostly just sleeping. Me and my Mam agree that it is time to say goodbye. We will be taking her to the vets tomorrow evening. I have never been through this process before so, could any of you inform me what...

Re: Cat terminally ill - what do we ask the vet?

Thanks All. I have contacted the vet who explained that if she doesn't respond well to her steroid injection (received last week), the kindest course of action would be to put her to sleep as her prognosis is bleak. We have a follow-up appointment this Friday to check her weight and general well-bei...

Re: Cat terminally ill - what do we ask the vet?

Thank you for replying, booktigger. To be fair, most people have advised the same thing. I guess I just want to make totally sure my Mam & I explore every option possible, even of the conclusion is putting her to sleep. Ultimately, it has to be what is best for Cleo. x

Cat terminally ill - what do we ask the vet?

Hi All, My Mam's cat Cleo (18y/o long haired blue), has been diagnosed with blood cancer and a large tumour on her bowel and stomach. She's lost 1/3 of her body weight over the last 4 weeks so we took her to the vets. My Mam was very distressed so atm we don't have many details and I want to be sure...

Re: Cat gaining weight and can't lose it: advice?

Thanks Alice. We use Yarrah http://www.yarrah.com/assortment/cat-food-dry" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; which is a great brand for her as she's had digestive problems in the past and should we decide to try wet food, it will be a mix as I don't want to cause too much upset...

Re: Cat gaining weight and can't lose it: advice?

Thanks to all who responded!
I had no idea that wet food was lower in calories! We will try to reduce to 50g dry until the bag is empty as she seems to love it, but if that doesn't work or she appears hungry, we will try her on wet food. I'm sure she'll adapt :)

Cat gaining weight and can't lose it: advice?

Hi all, My 14 year old cat Portia has been steadily gaining weight over the last 4 years, coinciding with becoming less active (she has joint problems). She currently weighs 5 1/2 kg. After seeking vetinary advice, we has put her on a dry food based diet of 60g per day. This has been going on for ap...
