Re: Poorly cat with ibd

yes that was the antibiotic given. It slowed down the diarrhoea to start with but subsequent courses had little effect. BC’s symptoms seem very like SIBO with the malabsorption in the small bowel and gassiness. In his case it seems the pancreas is involved. But his appetite has increased, constantly...

Re: Poorly cat with ibd

Over the years it’s been treated as an overgrowth of good bacteria hence the antibiotics, which was rather controversial as it wasn’t an infection. Didn’t work anyway. Faecal checks were done and repeated, always negative. Food intolerances were suspected so we tried a hydrolysed diet for a while an...

Re: Poorly cat with ibd

Hi Mollycat, yes he has always had a bowel problem. He was a stray before he moved in with us in 2009, no owners found. He used to leave ‘cow pats’ on our back grass before then, bless him! I’m really not sure what I mean when I say I want make him comfortable but with his weight loss due to malabso...

Re: Poorly cat with ibd

Hi fjm, thank you for your reply and all the info re homemade meals, sounds complicated but I’m sure it’ll be healthier than Felix..I tried him with KatKin (steamed raw- if that makes sense)a while ago but he didn’t take to it unfortunately. Yes the vet recommended a hydrolysed diet. I bought Purina...

Ah yes I’ll have a look into buying meat for home cooking. He’s very fussy but it’s worth looking at.Is there a website to go to for info into how to go about it and using the correct supplements?

Poorly cat with ibd

My dear old cat, who is nearly 15yo, has had chronic diarrhoea since before he came to live with us in 2009. Courses of antibiotics, probiotics and different foods including hydrolysed protein ones haven’t helped over the years. This year his weight started to drop and his appetite increased until h...

Re: Psyllium husk for diarrhoea?

Thank you for your replies. That’s interesting re dreamies. BC’s not really interested in them thank goodness. Our two other cats who also didn’t survive only had lickelix to take pills in. They both had hcm which was worsened by taking steroids. One developed lymphoma and the other died from chf. T...

Re: Psyllium husk for diarrhoea?

Hello Mollycat, I will ask the about vitamin B, it hasn’t been mentioned before but it’s a good suggestion. His potassium level was the low end of the normal range. Pro kolin has no effect. I’m trying to avoid more testing and medications having had two other little cats with ibd who went through th...

Psyllium husk for diarrhoea?

Hi. My cat BC has had chronic diarrhoea for years. He was a stray before that, around 12 years ago so he’s getting on a bit. Tests have always come back negative. He’s had antibiotics, probiotics, slippery elm bark, an exclusion diet over the years but nothing has helped. I am now trying to slowly c...

Re: spraying/peeing on wall

Hi, I have a cat who does this as well, he’s older at 13. Knowing he had a blocked bladder when he was young in his previous home I had a sample of his wee tested a couple of years ago. The vet found he had a lot of struvite crystals in it which would be making it harder for him to wee squatting, st...

Re: Experience of HCM and congestive heart failure

Hi, yes, saddle thrombus is horrible, sudden and distressing not only for the cat but also for the owner to witness. I’m so thankful he was in the house when it happened as he loved to go out on nice days, just into the garden. I didn’t have the car that day and called the vet in a panic who very ki...

Re: Experience of HCM and congestive heart failure

Hi Sarah, thank you for sharing your experience and so sorry for your loss. My cat, also a bsh, had both hcm and chf, in between those his heart seemed to improve. The thickening became thinner and all seemed well until he had to start taking steroids for ibd. The vet didn’t tell me it could affect ...

Re: Hard poo.

Hi lilynmitz, I posted a reply earlier but it’s disappeared! The cardio vet doesn’t think the diuretics are causing the hardness/dryness, but it seems a coincidence. I’ll ask our usual vet about the oil.

Re: Hard poo.

Hi Mollycat. I have spoken to the cardio vet who doesn’t want to reduce the diuretic as Harry has congestive heart failure and it keeps it under control along with other meds. She suggested he needed more fibre in his diet, preferably wet. I have a cupboard full of vet food which none of my cats wil...

Hard poo.

My little cat Harry, 12yo, has very hard, dry marble- size poo. Can anyone recommend a stool softener? He eats wet food, some dry and drinks lots of water probably due to diuretics he has to take every day. He has bowel and heart issues and takes many other pills so wondered if a paste on his paw to...

Re: Grieving cat.

“Cats often find intense emotion of any type directed towards them difficult to handle, so may shy away if you’re overdoing it.” Yes, I’ve seen this with Beaker. He is a very quiet almost unsociable cat who prefers his own company, although if I have a nap he will come and nap too next to me. I’ve n...

Re: Grieving cat.

Good advice Mollycat, and sorry to hear about Bobby. I’ve left the blanket on the bed that he and Bailey both slept on overnight, he spends most of the day on it. Christmas is going to be a quiet one this year, just the two of us and the furries, no turbocharged toddlers til later in the week. Then ...

Re: Grieving cat.

Hi Mollycat and lilynmitz, thank you for replying. One of our other cats, Harry, lost his brother last year and he still calls for him. He has become much more vocal and feistier since but he does miss him. Beaker is staying closer to me now when he’s not hiding away, and I give him plenty of fusses...

Re: Grieving cat.

Thank you Ruth for your reply, I’m just being over sensitive at the moment etc. He (Beaker) has been more aggressive with the other cats than usual since losing Bailey and more withdrawn. But,as you say, he will hopefully start to come out of his shell in time. I’m giving him as much attention as he...

Grieving cat.

Two weeks ago our lovely twelve year old cat Bailey, a ragdoll, died at the vets while they tried to save her. She had hcm, the start of kidney issues due to one of the heart meds causing dehydration, also chronic bronchitis. On that evening she suddenly started having breathing difficulties and we ...

Re: Little stray about to go into rescue.

The neutering was done using a cp voucher supplied by the vet, I paid for the blood test and checkup. From what I remember cp don’t do home from home, they want the cats in the rescue. There is a another local rescue who still can’t take him yet, but they use fosterers which might be kinder than kee...

Little stray about to go into rescue.

Hi, we’ve been looking after a little stray for two to three months. He used to raid/ split our bin bags open looking for food. No rescues could take him as they were all full up so we set him up in the conservatory, got him scanned, neutered and checked for felv and fiv- luckily negative. We can’t ...

Re: Gel caps

Thanks Mollycat. I haven’t tried those but have tried pill putty which is used in the same way but he wouldn’t touch it. He’s off all treats, even lickelix as he thinks a pill will be hiding inside, crushed or whole!
