scratching
Hello Cat Chatters My beloved Rufus has scratched the arms of the sofa to shreds. I don't really mind as it's old and I've been planning to replace it. But before I do, I want him to get into the habit of scratching a scratch post. To that end, I bought an installation consisting of three levels, a ...

cat poem
Accidentally downloaded a poetry book on to my Kindle, and found this. Shared it with Lilith who suggested I post it here. Hope it amuses you all as it did me! The Cats' Protection League Midnight. A knock at the door. Open it? Better had. Three heavy cats, mean and bad. They offer protection. I ask...

Aw thanks for re-posting my cartoon Lilith. Glad it still amuses. I'm posting the poem that I sent you privately and that amused you too in 'General Cat Chatting'. Haven't been around for a while due to health probs and depression etc, but am recovering. At least the days are getting longer now... T...

Re: If your cat was a human in a past life time...
Rufus would be a long-limbed, long-haired bearded bloke, getting on a bit now (late thirties), very laid-back but still not knowing how to behave round females. You know, just sitting and staring at them, and beating a retreat if the girl seems at all assertive/disdainful...

Re: caution: do not read this if you're eating
Thanks for your comments. I've had some more thoughts on this. The day after I posted this thread the problem resolved itself and hasn't recurred at all. Now, Rufus and I have quite a close physical relationship. As an insomniac I spend many hours sitting up in bed reading, with Rufus on my lap. He'...

Re: Going away and leaving your cat.
I have reciprocal arrangements with two sets of neighbours; a young family next-door and a semi-retired couple a few doors down the road. The older man will always spend some time chatting to Rufus, as he did to Blake before him, but I've never left either of them for longer than a week. Whereas in ...

Re: Providing for your cats in your Will?
I live on my own, only family is my son 200 plus miles away. I update my will regularly - everything goes to my son, with legacies to one or two kitty charities. I also have an advance directive ('living will') and have left instructions for my funeral. I'm 62, not in particularly good health, but I...

Re: Lily's Kitchen Cat Food
What a very cute avatar, Sophie 77. You'll spend weeks researching the best options and agonising over the ethics of the cat food, and you'll make a responsible decision... only to find that once day she'll wolf it down but the next will turn up her feline little nose, and give you one of those 'wha...

Re: Can They Really Do This?
   Sorry - so tired at the moment am crying at the drop of a hat. I think people who do not treat animals right, out of stupidity, ignorance, cruelty, or indeed from sheer arrogance, are the lowest of the low. We should be judged by how we treat those less powerful than ourselves.

caution: do not read this if you're eating
I apologise in advance for bringing up a distasteful subject, but I really need some expert advice. At the moment I keep finding lumps of matted fur and matter round Rufus's bottom. Some I can just tug away with a slicking brush - he is amazingly tolerant, though he'll give the odd little yelp - but...

hair ball
My long-haired Rufus sicked up a hairball this morning - well, more a hair sausage really. I'd never seen anything like it, so I actually measured it and it was 15 cm long (six inches), about an inch across. Is this a record?

Irish - do you mean Gaelic? Now there's a language I just can't get a handle on. I've heard Scottish Gaelic spoken in the highlands and have been to Welsh-speaking Wales a couple of times, but I just can't see any way into it, it seems so alien.

Re: Talking like a person
PS We did adopt a cat though, who used to walk along the edge of the old-fashioned bath while you were in it. And he used to sit in the empty bath and eat spiders crunchily. Oops I've done this before.

Re: Talking like a person
By the way, I married my first husband in 1974, when I was 19 and had lived here for 16 months. If he had to write official letters he got me to check them, as he didn't know the difference between 'to', 'too' and 'two'. Also he struggled with 'there', they're' and ''their'. Really basic stuff. And ...

Re: Talking like a person
Bobbys girl, I think everybody should do a basic course in Latin at school, as it is actually quite useful in that it teaches you grammar, i.e. the nuts and bolts of language, of how language works. Judging by the standard of English in public life these days, this is badly needed. I have a kind of ...

Re: Talking like a person
Well, here goes: I'm an artist and writer, did a degree in Cultural Studies as a mature student, and taught Creative Writing for ten years. Never thought I'd do that - everybody has a book inside them and in 99% of cases that's exactly where it should stay - but I actually enjoyed it and turned out ...

Re: Tracing rehomed cat from years ago
Liz1917, I had a similar experience many years ago. I was living in a flat with my 3-year old black cat Charlie when I met a new boyfriend. We went to London for a weekend and when we got back my abusive and exploitative landlord had changed the locks on my flat, locking in all my belongings. Charli...

Re: Why my bed ?
Hmm, Lilith, is there a gap in the market for little fleecy sweat pants for male cats who have had 'the chop' or have had to be de-furred for other reasons? I can visualise a whole range in snazzy patterns, from elasticated-wasted to dungarees with shoulder straps for post-op girl cats to others who...

Re: Painting with cat
I've had Rufus since autumn 2015 and in that time I've completely redecorated my bathroom, including tiling, papered one wall in my living room, and then painted the walls, ceilings and woodwork of the hall, stairs, landings and living room and through all this Rufus has taken a mild interest, then ...

Mrs Kane, I apologise for saying yo might be 'ever so slightly preaching to the converted' - I'd forgotten that the site does, in fact, attract a fair number of new or potential cat owners, who would definitely benefit from reading your excellent post. So, sorry, and a happy new year to you.

Hoppy mew purr from Rufus Tuftypaws and me to all of you. He wasn't bothered about the fireworks at all, so I needn't have locked the cat flap. He was bothered by my son 's presence. My son is 6'4" , quite a giant to a cat, and of course he has a much lower voice than me. Every time he came int...

Re: Best Wishes FUR a Cool Yule, Everyone!
As someone who suffers from Seasonal Affective Disorder (winter depression) I celebrate LIGHT - sunlight, candle light, fairy lights, yes, even the naff inflatable Santas, Rudolfs, penguins and parcels in people's front gardens, as long as they sport strings of lights! So Season's Greetings to you a...
