Re: Weight loss in elderly cat - any ideas?

Thanks for your replies. The vet phoned to say his liver, kidney and glucose levels are all normal. His thyroid is verging towards the top level of being normal, but they wouldn't normally treat at this stage. She suggested I keep an eye on any noisybreathing or coughing bearing in mind his chest wa...

Re: Weight loss in elderly cat - any ideas?

Ruth, thanks for your reply and I was sorry to hear about your Ragdoll. My feeling is that if the bloods come back clear, he will continue to loose weight. I suppose I'm being realistic in that I know he's an old cat, but at the same time want to do whatever I can to keep him happy and comfortable.

Weight loss in elderly cat - any ideas?

Toby is nearly 17 years old. We first realized he'd lost weight about a year ago (after we'd moved house so put it down to that), and in March his weight had reduced again (but this was overshadowed by the fact his sister had also lost weight and the vet was worried about her heart - she had hyperth...

Re: Cat stopped eat dry cat food - any ideas?

Thanks for your replies! I don't think there's anything wrong with the dry, as her brother is eating it - if one refuses something they both do. They last saw the vet in February who said their teeth were good for their age, but that doesn't mean they were perfect or things haven't changed. Obviousl...

Cat stopped eat dry cat food - any ideas?

My 16 year old cat would eat dry cat food constantly if she could. However, she has mostly wet and a little dry. Just hit me she's not been eating dry for a week or so, has been happily eating wet though and seems her normal lively self. I'm going to get some different dry cat food tomorrow (she'll ...

Anyone got older cats?

My two have just turned 16 - I can't believe I've still got them and they both appear fit, healthy and eat very well. My girl still tears around the house and my boy still loves going out. They both have lovely fur still, although, I've noticed recently that the fur on Toby's legs isn't quite so whi...

Any ideas for insulating a cat flap?

Does anyone have any ideas for insulating a cat flap? I was wondering if there's a film I could put over the flap, but any other ideas appreciated. We've had to put it in the extension off our lounge to anxious to reduce draughts. It's in the wall and my husband has filled in all gaps to avoid heat ...

How high is your cat flap?

How high is your cat flap from the ground, either inside bottom measurement or inside top? Just moved house and chap came to install new cat flap today in the wall. As it's in the extension the floor is quite high, so we know we'll have to put a substantial step in outside. The only problem is he's ...

Toby is going stir crazy inside!

We moved house two weeks ago and have kept both cats in since then. Lottie is taking it in her stride, accepting she can't go out. Toby has had his moments meowing at the top of his voice in the night, but the last 48 hours he's looking out of the window more, trying to sniff at air coming in throug...

Re: Cat flap in wall or door?

Thank you. The chap whose doing it comes highly recommended and I've spoken to him this morning explaining we need to have it done but feels there are pros and cons to each. He did say before he would probably pop to take final measurements when we'd decided and readily said he'd pop in to to throug...

Cat flap in wall or door?

Have just moved and bought a cat flap which is suitable for double glazing or a wall. Had a chap out to quote who reckons it will look tidier in the French doors, but we won't be able to put curtains up which we're likely to do. Also step will need increasing in height, but can't be increased that m...

How long did you keep your cats in after moving?

If you've moved house with cats, how long did you keep them in? Did they go wondering or missing, or always returned to new house? Have you any thoughts on how much longer to keep mine in bearing in mind what I've said about Toby below? The cats have adjusted to new home although Lottie seems very c...

Just moved house - my plan & any advice please

We moved house on Wednesday. Toby and Lottie are nearly 15 and had to go into a cattery for the first times in their lives as well as coming back to a different house, so obviously traumatic. Their safe room has temporarily had to be our lounge (had to make this decision in minutes of moving in as w...

Re: Advice on moving house with cats please

Thanks for your replies. The room we're putting them in to start with is quite big and most of their stuff will be down one end. They can easily be left in there for as long as it takes - Toby's main concern will be his empty tummy, so I suspect he will be the first one choosing to go further afield...

Advice on moving house with cats please

We're moving next week. Have Toby and Lottie booked into a cattery, as our home is quite small and there's nowhere to easily keep them safe (am sending them with a couple of things with their scent on and also ours). Always we are towards the top of a big chain so not anticipating keys until late af...

Cattery - family or individual pens?

We're moving house next week and my cats are going into a cattery for a couple of days, so I know they're safe. They're nearly 15 and have never been in a cattery, so it's going to be a bit of a shock. Lottie is very much our home cat, Toby comes and goes as he pleases. Due to this Lottie she's the ...

Can you have a cat flap in glass double glazed door?

About to move into our new house and it would be ideal if a cat flap could be inserted into the glass on a double glazed door - realize it won't be cheap. Can this be done?

Temporary scratching ideas for big cat

We are about to move house and obviously I'll need to keep my two cats in for 2/3 weeks. Toby is a big cat who loves to scratch the fence panels outside, so will need some kind of scratching option. He can reach just over 82cm as he can touch the top edge of our worktop. Has anyone got any ideas? Ju...

Re: Moving house with cats - any advice/comments appreciated

Thanks for your replies (so far). Yes, I agree we will need to keep them in for a few weeks. Think Toby will go crazy though, he used to sit by the back door when he was a kitten meowing like crazy to go out. Luckily we get on really well with the present neighbours he likes and we have eachother's ...

Moving house with cats - any advice/comments appreciated

We should be moving in four weeks! I have two fifteen year old cats who've only ever lived in this house. They've never been in a cattery, but I've just about got my head around putting them in one for 24 hours, so that's the day of completion sorted. I can bring them home and easily keep them in on...
