Re: Cat near me with ear problem

If you can catch him/her, then go to a veet or charity/animal shelter - that way you can get some advice or the cat can at least be left with someone who can help. It could well be skin cancer and a bad case - I grew up with four white cats who all had it, but it was removed before it got that bad -...

Re: 18 year old cat suddenly lethargic and off food :(

Also, glad he's eaten something - just keep encouraging him with this and obviously if he doesn't pick up get him to the vet ASAP. By the way, it's better to panic unnecessarily than not do anything at all!

Re: Blackie is not himself ....

Do the cattery check vaccinations are up to date? Just trying to rule out anything he could have picked up from another cat here. Was he fed his usual food in the cattery? A change in diet could cause different stools and if he preferred it, he's not eating his usual stuff. A cat who isn't feel righ...

To keep vaccinating my two old cats

My two cats are 17 years old and I've had them vaccinated every year. They are due their annual vaccinations, but as they are both needing for veterinary attention as they get older, I half feel I don't want to put them through another visit - although Lottie will now let me pill her, she's really s...

Re: CKD and lifespan?

No the vet hasn't prescribed anything, but in all fairness I haven't pushed this point as I didn't realise at the time there was anything available. He's had a good couple of days, eating better than he has in months suddenly (a couple of times with encouragement), not disturbing us in the night, no...

Re: CKD and lifespan?

booktigger, thanks he did have a better night - in fact, neither cat woke up us which is a rarity. I suspect he's had it a while as he's slowly lost weight over the last 18 months. I got him checked in the summer and vet and tests could find nothing wrong. At that time he was passing liquid on the b...

Re: Cat peeing only on fresh bedsheets, nothing else

Cats are often attracted back to an area they have soiled as they can still smell the ammonia. From memory I think bio is more likely to destroy the smell so I'd suggest washing your bedsheets and also the the quilt if you have one anyway. If she's managed to soil on the mattress there are products ...

Re: Kidney disease and diet

TheCatsMum, he will eat some of the RC pouches - I can just about get a couple down him with encouragement, so I'll continue with this for as long as possible. His sister hasn't been eating her usual stuff so well, so I've changed her over to Felix AGAIl senior, especially as it's hard to keep him t...

CKD and lifespan?

As some of you will be aware from my other thread, my boy has been diagnosed with CKD. For those who've been through this, can you tell me how long your cat survived after diagnoses or how long they've had it for? Also, what were they like in their final months/weeks if you don't mind me asking? He'...

Re: How much do you spend on cat food?

Thanks for your replies and cost cutting suggestions. RC does seem one of the most expensive, but I'll stick while he'll eat some, will certainly look at Zooplus prices. His sister had Royal Canin for a while and went off it after two boxes, so I dubious and can see me having to try something else a...

Re: Kidney disease and diet

Thanks so much for the further replies, everything is really helpful either for now or possibly for the future. He's still eating the Royal Canin (although leaving some) so I've put in an order now in the hope he doesn't go off it. Sometimes it's going to be easier to feed both my cats the same (ie ...

How much do you spend on cat food?

One of my cats had just been diagnosed with CKD so if I can find a renal diet he'll stick to, I suspect he's going to cost us £80/90 a month as he'll be on mainly wet food. Just reviewing what to do about his sister. One cat food they've always eaten is Butchers Classic, so this with some pouches as...

Re: Kidney disease and diet

Thanks for your further replies. Jan, while searching online I've come across a lot of CKD cats who like Felix AGAIL and wonder if other owners are putting their cats on it as perhaps it has slightly less phosphorus. I've heard some don't like the phosphorus binders, but I'll certainly be trying som...

Re: Kidney disease and diet

Thanks for your further replies. He's eating the renal food, but the novelty is wearing off and he's not so enthusiastic. I just picked some more food up from the vet (I don't want to order it in bulk online until I'm sure he'll continue eating it) and she said to at least try other brands or if not...

Re: Kidney disease and diet

Thanks Ruth and I'm glad your boy recovered. Toby is 17 years old, so something like this is fully expected at his age. I'm slowly introducing him to the renal pouches, so far as good. Strangely he's not drinking like he was and eating better and I don't believe one pouch a day would make a differen...

Re: Kidney disease and diet

Marks, thanks for your reply, it good to get information from someone who (unfortunately for them) has experience. Can you remember how long any of your survived after diagnosis? I didn't realise there were various stages, so I haven't asked vet yet where he is.

Kidney disease and diet

I took Toby to the vet as he's become fussy with food and drinking a lot more. Vet has taken bloods and it's his kidneys. She has given him some Royal Canin renal pouches and I can buy them online cheaper if I want. His sister had Royal Canin for something else, eat about 14 pouches and wouldn't tou...

Re: What do you feed your old cat?

Thanks for your replies. Luckily he tolerates milk, so I've been giving a little some evenings for energy when I know he's had a bad day. I'm going to raid the shops later looking at the cans/pouches you've suggested. He does have a sister, so unfortunately it'll mean too of them wanting more expens...

What do you feed your old cat?

My 17 year old male cat has become very fussy with his food. Sometimes he'll eat a little or just lick the jelly, other times won't eat and you can hear his tummy rumbling. A couple of days later he'll eat the thing he refused before. He's a bit better with fish, so I guess it's a case of him losing...

Re: Old cat not eating, just old age?

Janey, thanks for your reply. I've now bought a few different foods. He's trying them but only eating a bit, like his other food. He's always enjoyed every last lap of milk, now he'll drink some and leave the rest. Webbox sticks and yogurt drinks and Dreamies go down well, but nutritionally and cost...

Re: Old cat not eating, just old age?

Thanks for your replies everyone. I was thinking about getting some different food anyway, so will try that for a day or two. Maybe one or two different treats in the hope I can stimulate his appetite. The vet did check the kidney function which apparently is okay. He's 17 years old, so I know he's ...

Old cat not eating, just old age?

Toby used to be 6.75kg. He's slowly lost weight so I got his thyroid levels checked which came back towards the top of normal. Vet checked his levels again two weeks ago which are still within the normal range and with no other obvious thyroid symptons is reluctant to treat him for his. He also had ...
