Re: Letting cat out for 1st time

Poor you! I had a few nights like that when I first started letting my lot out when we moved here. They did all settle into a routine of coming in for dinner when the novelty had worn off, hopefully yours will too! At least she came home safely, and you know she knows her way home. Yeah that's all ...

Re: Letting cat out for 1st time

We let her out last night at 7.30pm. Stayed up till half 3 am waiting for her then gave up. Got up at half 6 and there she was waiting to be in. Little sh*t had me up all night and just waltzed in for breakfast like nothing was up! She's fast asleep on the bed now which she never does so I think she...

Re: Letting cat out for 1st time

Just a couple of days now till the big "let-out"! All this week we've been letting her in the garden and not letting her climb the fence, then banging her food dish when it's time to come in, and she's been racing in each time. Then last night we let her onto the fence, where she climbed o...

Re: Letting cat out for 1st time

That's really interesting - I have a loc8tor, but the cat has to be within 100-400ft range, and mine clearly goes outside that in a couple of minutes, the monkey... As you say, a GPS tracker would allow you to see the approximate location at any distance, as long as the cat is not in the habit of l...

what device was that - do you have a link. Sounds interesting This is it here. I looked at the loc8tor and was going to buy that till i just read the post saying it's within a very short range. Didn't notice that on their website. So think i'll stick with this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Tractive-...

Re: Poor cat is locked inside a garage :(

I'd have gone absolutely apesh@t if i was knocking on someone's door for them to let my cat out and they weren't answering. I'd have either carried on knocking like a mad man on the night, and if they still didn't answer would have absolutely hammered them the next morning for making me lose a night...

Re: Letting cat out for 1st time

Great advice again. Yes Theo is definitely not ready and im quite happy for him to remain an indoor cat. Hes just too lovely to take a chance. :) I just wish my wife was as patient, she's desperate to let ours out, even though she's not really showing any sign of wanting to be out. She thinks becau...

Re: Letting cat out for 1st time

Absolutely - and we're all familiar with the old adage 'letting the cat out of the bag'. The meaning comes from the fact that once you DO let a cat out of a bag, a carrier, a door or anything else, you've got very little chance of getting it back in unless it wants to... and don't I know it. I lost...

Re: Letting cat out for 1st time

I absolutely agree with Jacks, 3-4 weeks is the way to go. She needs to feel established in her new home, and that it's her place of safety to run back to when she's out and about. Only time will give her that. Good luck! :) I was saying this last night when my wife wanted to let her out. Just be p...

Re: Letting cat out for 1st time

The guideline is generally 3-4 weeks inside. This varies of course - some cats seem to be well oriented straight away, others take time. I would err on the side of caution to be honest, particularly as the old home is not that far away and she might be tempted to retrace smells back to her old home...

Letting cat out for 1st time

Following on from my topic last month of taking in my in-laws' cat and not wanting to let it out, we have now taken the cat permanently, and, following the week we had her last month, we have now (1 month later) had her for 3 days. Just wanted a bit of advice on letting her out, as this is the final...

And I agree with you - I always tend to let the cat judge and let it set the pace. I would neither force a cat in, or out.
Good idea, ta.

Re: Taking a new outdoor cat

It sounds like this cat may prefer the out doors due to circumstances rather than choice. if you have been keeping it indoors while looking after it as it been happy? I agree its cruel to force a cat to be an indoor cat when it wants to be a out door one but by giving this cat the affection its mis...

Re: Taking a new outdoor cat

Heart breaking but as you say - needs must, you don't want the guilt of having another cats blood on your hands and that is completely acceptable. I just hope the poor kitty does find a loving home eventually! She'll just end up back at my i laws house, with a dog she tries to keep out of the way o...

Re: Taking a new outdoor cat

I agree that it is far from cruel keeping a cat indoors - both of mine are indoor only. BUT to appease your wife - is there any way you could cat-proof your garden? (if you have one) or get a outdoor run/pen for kitty to relax in a few hours a day? I've already tried that approach. She just thinks ...

Taking a new outdoor cat

We are currently babysitting a 5yr old female cat for my parents in law who are on holiday for a week. Our house is animal free since our cat died 2 weeks ago. The house the cat has come from also has a very annoying large dog. My mother in law got the cat from a kitten, then a year later got bored ...

Re: Metacam Issues

Glen, see my comments re metacam on your other thread. Oral metacam does get some bad press, and sometimes for the wrong reasons. It's mainly an issue with cats who already have severe kidney problems. But even then, it's still appropriate to use it in some cases. For example, my Lily has had faili...

Metacam Issues

Just wondered if anyone on here knew of any issues with Metacam causing kidney failure in cats. I've looked it up online and came across quite a startling website with countless testimonies about cats having routine operations, being given oral Metacam for the pain afterwards, and days/weeks later t...

Re: Broken Jaw Operation

So sorry Glen :( such a horrible experience! Was the Metacam oral or injection as I have heard of some cats having a lot of issues with oral Metacam. At least Moggy is in a better place now xxx It was oral metacam using a syringe directly into his mouth. I've been wondering this myself. Do you thin...

Re: Broken Jaw Operation

Thanks everyone for the kind words. It has been a dreadful day but i know from experience it gets easier slowly but surely. At least he is with his brother now and no longer in pain. Just trying through the heartbreak to be thankful for the 5 years of hilarity and joy he gave us every single day.

Re: Broken Jaw Operation

Unfortunately it would appear the anaesthetic used on his mouth operation had weakened his immune system and his heavy breathing was being caused by lots of build up on his lungs and by the end he could hardly breath and was on oxygen. He was put to sleep this morning. His brother was put to sleep 8...

Re: Broken Jaw Operation

Unfortunately over the last 24 hours moggy seems to have taken a downward turn, he can't stand up properly, is breathing rather heavy and not eaten in over 24hrs now and also hardly moving. Straight to the vets in the morning but i fear the worse. Just can't understand how a procedure on his mouth n...

Re: My cat isn't eating after a procedure for an ear infecti

I've had a cat just had an operation on his broken jaw 2 weeks ago and for a week he wasn't eating, and he's only really just started eating properly again the last few days. The vet gave him a 2 week antibiotic injection at the time of the operation and we had to give him metacam afterwards. He jus...

Re: Broken Jaw Operation

My cat got knocked down to weeks ago ( see thread " cat won't eat and now injured" ) and also suffered a broken jaw. Not one on my avatar. He had it wired, but on taking him for check last week, found probably tried to eat a chicken bone scavenged from our rubbish bin and dislocated it. T...

Re: Broken Jaw Operation

No he's not licking his lips. We decided to give him a night off the metacam last night and he's been eating more, purring a lot and his face just looks more like his old self and he's not slept as much. I think the metacam has been making him feel sick. So we may just give him it every other day now.

Re: Broken Jaw Operation

Yeah I think i'll run him along to the vets in the morning just to be on the safe side. I only ever give him metacam after he's had his few mouthfuls of food a day but there still may not be enough on his stomach to absorb it i suppose so it's a vicious circle. I really love the older cats, especial...

Re: Broken Jaw Operation

He's due back in a week for his post-op check so may just leave it till then and watch him, see how he gets on. To be honest, he's always been a bit lazy since we got him 5 years ago from the rescue place, but he's taken that to new levels since his operation. I was also wondering if the metacam was...
