Re: Christopher Brodie stole our hearts..

Hello Issi - Goobbee is the name we gave to one our rescue cats and he certainly lives up to that name. We live on a hobby farm in central Ontario Canada. "Hobby" means we do not farm - we let Nature recover the land. Nine years ago we lost our beloved dog to bladder cancer. Her loss destroyed us. B...

Re: Christopher Brodie stole our hearts..

I am very touched by your beautiful stories. Few people want to rescue older cats but they have so much to offer all of us, especially as we ourselves move into our senior years. There are many cat books out there but I have never seen one "In Praise of Senior Cat Rescue". It would be great if you a...

Re: My Cats Driving Me NUTS!!

If you have a covered patio you might try setting up a large dog pen just outside your door where you can place your cat outside but safe. We have a double Great Dane pen on our covered patio for one of our cats that likes the outdoors. The pen is 8 ft long, 4 ft wide and 4 ft high. We put up steps ...

Re: Do female stray cays get along?

Sorry - I meant to write "cats" in the title and not " cays". And I even proof read it!

Do female stray cays get along?

We recently rescued a beautiful female cat from our forest. We named her Allee. She is less than one year old now. She had three lovely kittens in the forest that we also rescued and have now placed in wonderful forever homes. We also have our own 3 rescue cats that are now 7, 8, 9 years old. Two ar...

Re: How to bring our stray cat out of her shell?

Yes, if you read my post from Wed, having reared babies will have made her survival instincts stronger and harder to break, plus the fact she hasn’t been neutered, so still has extra hormones. She may indeed view you negatively as you trapped them all and took away her babies. I would definitely le...

Re: How to bring our stray cat out of her shell?

That is a good point, Allee has had a lot to contend with in 5 weeks and carrying her round is forcing her to do things on your terms rather than hers, which will be made worse by the fact that she isn’t comfortable being in a house yet, and could be having an effect on her cowering around people, ...

Re: How to bring our stray cat out of her shell?

I agree that docility can be a sign of fear. Certainly what you describe when you put her down (ie going “floppy”) is very much a fear reaction. We had a Siamese when I was young who was terrified of thunder, and she would go like a limp rag, incapable of much movement, till it was over And yet All...

Re: How to bring our stray cat out of her shell?

I agree that 5 weeks is VERY early days for a feral cat to adjust, even such a young one. She has probably had little or no experience of humans and has a lot to learn. She only feels relaxed enough to play when you’ve all gone to bed. Is there any reason you don’t let her have free run of the hous...

Re: How to bring our stray cat out of her shell?

Maybe her soul is with the outdoors? Or perhaps I've read too much James Herriot :) The rescuers we got our previous cats from had rescued a huge cat colony, too many too all rehome. They ended up neutering all then rereleasing many, just feeding them, providing outdoor shelter and keeping an eye o...

How to bring our stray cat out of her shell?

Last August we noticed a new stray cat in our forest. We set up trail cameras to watch her at night. By Sept. she was pregnant so we fed her in the forest until Nov. while she nursed her babies. When the weather got cold she brought her 3 babies into our hay shed where we live-trapped them. Our vet ...

Pancreatitis Special Diet?

Our Goobbee rescue cat is now 9 days following his bout with acute pancreatitis. He is slowly recovering and is on 4 different antibiotics. We are still waiting for the cytology report on abdominal fluid that was taken during his u/s last week. We need help in setting up Goobbee's new diet program s...

Re: Post Acute Pancreatitis Problems

Thank you all very much. It is one week since Goobbee had his acute attack and 4 days since he came home. He is doing somewhat better. He has spurts of his former energy and runs around and has fun. But after 5 minutes he gets very tired and sleeps a long time. He pees a lot and has reduced his very...

Re: Post Acute Pancreatitis Problems

Thanks so much everyone. What is a/d ?? We did give Goobbee an appetite stimulant from the vet yesterday and he has started eating a little bit on his own - mostly Temptations which I know is not good for him. We also have a critical care wet cat food from the vet by Royal Canin and we give him that...

Re: Post Acute Pancreatitis Problems

Thank you both. We spoke with the vet today and she does not want to give Goobbee a diuretic as it could dehydrate him. He got so sick Monday night. We love him so. Thanks for your advice He is perking up a little for a few minutes each time and then sleeps. But his weight went up 30% with the IV fl...

Post Acute Pancreatitis Problems

Our very handsome 8-year old rescue boy Goobbee had an acute pancreatitis attack this past Monday night. Prior to that he never had a health problem. We got him to the vet near us first thing Tuesday. After blood work, x-rays, ultrasounds they diagnosed acute pancreatitis and placed him on IV fluids...
