Re: Turkey same as chicken?
I'd be surprised if that was a food allergy, normally that makes them throw up every time they eat it, not just occasionally

Re: First time kitten owner advice
I'd be very surprised if a 10 month old didn't know what the litter tray was from the beginning, I would just use the same litter she is used to initially, and then change if it isn't something you like. Food wise I'd keep her on the same initially, but at 10 months old, you can start transitioning ...

Re: my special needs cat needs behavioral adjusting
I didn't realise cats could get autism. For his dry food issue, have you tried a raised pet feeder? That should give it a similar height to a human holding it, if he has issues with bending his head to eat

Some cats happily adjust to an indoor life after a traumatic experience, some don't. I think if she only went out for an hour a day, you might be lucky.

Re: Wobbly/weak back end
How old is he? Did he have a vet check? It could be muscle weakness, between coming from a hoarding situation and then cowering at the shelter, that his muscles need strengthening, I have seen it in rescue cats, and after a few months, they can suddenly jump on things they couldn't previously

Re: How bad is a fat cat, at this stage?
Thanks Mollycat - I think that I will stick to RC for now to help get Lucy's weight back down, especially as the Early Renal has things in that will help her arthritis, which was the only reason for the Hills. Sandra, my only issue with one of the things you mention about the SDMA highlighting early...

Re: How bad is a fat cat, at this stage?
Sorry for the delay in responding, I had to top up Lucy's biscuit tub today, and was actually quite shocked checking the bags out, K/D + Mobility has 21.5% fat compared to RC Early Renal at 14. I'd be interested to know what normal K/D Dry is? Protein: Hills - 28.3; Royal Canin 28 - pretty much noth...

I'm quite disappointed the rescue didn't do bloods on him. You'd hope having had a dental would rule that issue out

Re: Old and Long Term Homeless
I took a similar kind of cat in once, he smelt so bad I had to drive home with the window open, his was down to a dental issue, but I would also get full bloods including thyroid done, as that can stop them wanting affection. Good on you for taking him in, and fingers crossed for him

Re: I don't trust my vet???
I Can understand the vet not wanting to go down the surgical route to check for lymphoma, but I'm surprised they didn't offer steroids if that is what they suspect. Out of interest, did the blood panel include thyroid (as it's not always included as standard)

Re: Dieting Options
I'm quite stunned that the vet would only say 50g of dry food given his weight- I know they say to feed for the target weight, but not if the target weight is more than 10% reduction, so I'd be concerned about too rapid a weight loss, which can lead to liver issues. Could you increase his play sessi...

Re: How bad is a fat cat, at this stage?
I'll check out the different dry bags - seems we only have 3 at the moment, RC Early Renal, RC Special (like dreamies, I use them as a treat!) and K/D + mobility. I have to say that I don't think I'd go down the SDMA route again - while it is nice knowing early and potentially buying more time, I'm ...

Re: How bad is a fat cat, at this stage?
Just out of curiosity Sandra, what are his kidney levels? I thought SDMA was only accurate till you get to the top end of the scale, then you need urea/creatnine after that?
Molly - what differences are you interested in? I can check the 4 bags of renal biscuits I have for you.

Re: How bad is a fat cat, at this stage?
I bought Lucy the Royal Canin early renal, despite the fact she was diagnosed 4 years ago. She has a mix of 4 renal biscuits, plus a few dental and calm biscuits (although only 3 of the renal ones go in her teatime tub, the others are for treats!) - she has pretty much every one that Royal Canin mak...

Re: How bad is a fat cat, at this stage?
Hiya, my vet has never been too bothered by Lucy's lack of weight loss, as if she crashes, she has some reserves. I did get a bit of a telling off yesterday as Lucy has put 600g on since she was there in Dec, which has wiped out the last 5 years worth of hard work!! Ironically that was caused as she...

Quite often, cats will use trays as they don't feel comfortable doing it outside, as they are quite exposed when toileting outside - are there more cats in your new area?

Re: FIV and excessive water drinking.
There is definitely a test for early kidney detection it's called an SDMA (not sure what the initials stand for), it picked up my cats CKD 4 years this month, but I'd be very surprised if your cat had it at 9 months, young cats normally develop acute kidney issues and they are normally more sudden a...

I'm sorry for your loss, I doubt it was hypertension caused by kidney issues, as beta blockers are used for hypertension in cats, and you say she was on a low dose. I do think a neurological issue is more likely

Re: Bewitched, bothered and ...
I'm glad hubby had a sign that made him realise that he wanted cats in his life again, I do appreciate the headache though, I had that with Lucy as I wasn't used to picking cats, and I did go to two rescues with two different friends, both had different ideas of what I should go for, and that made i...

Re: Treats for cat with kidney disease
That is a big help Mollycat, Lucy's CKD must be progressing as she is now refusing renal wet (and she has 4 different ones!), but fortunately still happy with renal dry, adult and senior wet. Funnily enough I've always been strict with her cat treats (she's also always been on a diet, so they are ha...

Re: Adopting from the SSPCA
We had a Sphynx once, I only met him once, but I wasn't convinced - they feel very different from a normal cat due to not having fur, they are supposed to feel like a peach, but you can feel more of their organs when you pick them up, which I found unsettling. Plus they have the oriental ears that I...

Re: Molly's mouth
The only reason I can think why they would do pre op tests on arrival rather than after fasting, is because of the IV drip, in case it skewed any of the figures - although the irony there is you still have skewed figures. Raised Urea without raised Creatnine can be infection related, which would fit...

Re: Molly's mouth
That is strange they tested her straight away, you'd think vets would know some of those results are more accurate after fasting, and hope they didn't charge for the urinalysis they didn't do. But I agree with the others about it not being a waste of money - I've always done annual bloods on senior ...

Re: Molly's mouth
Clearly your vet is a Hills rep, as her saying she only needs the early stage renal rather than normal renal, then telling you to use K/D is a bit of a contradiction, but when I was getting Lucy's renal food last month, I noticed Royal Canin have brought in an early renal dry food, which I bought ev...

My vets do their own ooh, although you have to go to the main branch which is 12.5 miles away (I've been enough to get there with my eyes closed!!), they scrapped the ooh fee the other year in the hope that it would stop people leaving a poorly pet all weekend to avoid the extra charge (although bef...
