Re: Advice for a long car journey

Maybe look into a cooling pad for them if it's going to be warm and your car doesn't have air con? My in laws have one for their very heat sensitive small dog, it works wonders!

Re: Skin issues

I've never asked a vet about antihistamines so don't know at all, all I know is I googled and found that antihistamines can be prescribed for pets so it has to be worth asking. But surely if they say it's an allergy they should have thought of that Yeah, I'd have thought antihistamines would be pre...

Re: Skin issues

I use antihistamines, I don't have allergies I have an issue where my body doesn't get rid of as much histamine as I take in or produce, resulting in an overload that comes out as evil welts and itching - that's a very oversimplified description. Originally I was prescribed AH and I still have them...

Re: How to Handle Peeing Outside of Box?

Fair play, I get what you mean, I'm dyspraxic and to me it's completely normal, my parents just thought I was clumsy as a child, I developed "workarounds" as I grew so it wasn't until my teens when I got an assessment at university for dyslexia that we discovered it. I'm glad, because it m...

Re: How to Handle Peeing Outside of Box?

Hi Joe Danger! Sorry to hear that, it's frustrating isn't it. I have a learning difficulty which doesn't actually disqualify me from driving a car (I ride a motor scooter on a provisional licence) but it does mean that I'll need more lessons and extra time learning to pass the test and be able to dr...

Re: How to Handle Peeing Outside of Box?

Hi JoeDanger! Thanks for your response. Yes, we will get him done eventually, it's just not been possible recently due to Covid. Vets around us were only accepting animals for urgent issues, and we're dependent on my dad in law to get him there as we can't drive, but he's isolating and is not vaccin...

Re: How to Handle Peeing Outside of Box?

Hi Mollycat, Thanks for your reply, he was absolutely fine for months until recently, he was seemingly quite happy, (until he got out) and that's what we're confused about, we're trying to work out what has changed otherwise. We brought him indoors because the road we live on has become increasingly...

How to Handle Peeing Outside of Box?

Hi! We brought our cat inside-only, a few months ago, (I posted about it here in January). He was a bit angsty for a few months about it, but then did seem to eventually settle down. He was good as gold for a few months and then somehow managed to escape whilst I was away with my parents (my partner...

Poor Poorly Pixie

My parents' cat, Pixie, is very poorly and it's looking increasingly likely that she'll have to be put to sleep. She went off her food a few months ago, was being very picky with regards to eating. She'd always been a bit picky anyway so it wasn't any cause for alarm at first, but then she started b...

Re: Emergency. 18 year old might have only a few hours, says the vet

Hi Riccardo. What a lovely tribute, and what a beautiful boy he was! You've been through so much together. I am so so sorry for your loss. I had been reading his story over the last couple of weeks and it was so touching to see the love you both clearly had for each other. I am glad his passing was ...

Re: Yucalm or Zylkene?

Pet Remedy seemed to do something for mine where Feliway had failed, but it's no miracle cure. We've also used Zylkene, same comment really, it might do a bit to take the edge off nerves but not much more. What has made a difference to the extremely shy Molly is Reiki. Thanks Mollycat! We think the...

Re: FIV Testing?

Hi Mollycat. Thank you again, we are waiting for lockdown to end at the moment and then we will get him along for a health check as soon as possible. Will see if we can get him checked for thyroid and kidney function too. So do we just ask for a comprehensive health test to look for everything and t...

Yucalm or Zylkene?

I posted a while ago about our previously free roaming male cat who we are trying to transition to indoor only. Another cat was hit and killed last week at the top of our road only about 100 yards or so from our house. That's the second one around here in a few weeks. We were doing OK with him but n...

Re: Best Way to Get Rid of Fleas?

Thanks Fjm, that's worth knowing! We have a monthly prescription of Frontline, so I might consider switching to plus then in that case. Can you get Advantage on a monthly prescription? It's really handy it being delivered to me! I have a terrible memory and I can really easily forget stuff like flea...

Re: Best Way to Get Rid of Fleas?

Thank you both for your responses! Fjm, thanks for the heads up, I will avoid diatomaceous earth then! We're using dronspot for worms and frontline spot on for fleas, I think it is supposed to break the cycle, but we were late sorting him last month (maybe that's why!). He definitely has something g...

Best Way to Get Rid of Fleas?

Sigh. Here we go again... He has been scratching and nibbling over the last few days so we had our suspicions but hadn't seen any actual fleas. We have a prescription flea treatment we put on him once a month but I think they are in the house again as I have twice in the last few days found them on ...

Re: FIV Testing?

I would ask your vet. The test requires blood to be taken and analysed, which is not usually part of a basic health check. Depending on the age of your cat, and the depths of your wallet, it may be worth checking for early signs of other common issues like hyperthyroidism and declining kidney funct...

FIV Testing?

Sorry if this is a really stupid question! How do you get a cat checked for FIV/FELV? Is it a test you specifically have to ask for or do vets routinely check cats for FIV as part of their basic health check? We have a previously indoor/outdoor cat who adopted us as a stray a few years ago. He is un...

Re: How to Help a Previously Outdoor Cat to Adjust to Indoors?

Hello. I too am transitioning an outdoor cat to an indoor. I'm having trouble settling our one with my existing cats but also with getting our new one to play. The only toy she shows any interest in is a laser pen. Have you tried that? If your lad wants to go back out you can cat proof your garden ...

Re: Cat pees facing wrong way in litterbox tip

Useful to know! Several times my partner and I have gone into our bathroom to find pee UNDER the litterbox... We couldn't work out how he was managing it! He obviously wasn't peeing whilst outside the box onto the floor, because it was entirely under the box, with none on the floor anywhere else, bu...

How to Help a Previously Outdoor Cat to Adjust to Indoors?

Hi! I'm a newbie to this forum so sorry if this isn't posted in the right place! Sorry also if it is long. Several years ago my partner and I were adopted by a cat. He had no collar and wasn't chipped or neutered. We think he might be quite an old boy, about 13 or 14 at a guess, as he has a few scar...
