Re: Buying a cat from a breeder
I can't see any reason to buy from a breeder when there are thousands of lovely cats languishing in rescues and being put down simply because there aren't enough homes. Rescue cats are just as loving and beautiful as any pedigree cat. For those who absolutely have to have a pedigree cat, there are ...

Re: Buying a cat from a breeder
Where I used to live a lady owned about 3 or 4 Persians (not sure how many as they looked the same!) who had totally free access, although they were always in or close to her garden. Max had totally free outdoor access and there is a Siamese close to where I live that I see outside sometimes. Mika h...

Re: Buying a cat from a breeder
I totally understand people's feelings towards breeders, this is after all a rescue site. I was a bit dubious about posting for that very reason, but I do feel quite strongly that some people will buy a specific breed and they need to be doing this the right way, getting cross breeds and kittens wit...

Buying a cat from a breeder
I know this website is about rescuing and rehoming cats, but there will always be people who want to buy a specific breed. With that in mind I wanted to post this table showing the differences between a good breeder and a back yard breeder (and all the versions in between) and ask that anyone who co...

Re: Getting a resacue cat
I would advise you visit the centres, it's not that they don't want to let the cats go, of course they do, but if they have people visiting to attend to I'm sure the phone calls and forms just end up coming second. They are all run by volunteers remember who are trying their best. Please don't go to...

Re: Cattery - family or individual pens?
I'd go for a family pen, we've had cats that are not the best of friends but definitely sick together in the face of adversity (ie the cattery). It would be good if the owner had another pen then you can just see what happens. It would be awful if they spent the whole time fighting.

Re: Pix the pain
Does he want to go out the front door? If he's not that bothered about going out at all maybe you could just let him stay in until he gets his confidence back? If the cat flap is available I'm sure he'll use it once he decides he's missing out on the sunshine.

Re: food quantities 11 month old siamese
Hello, just thought I'd add what Mika eats to the thread - he has the best part of a wet sachet morning & early evening (he's supposed to share with Jess but Jess usually just licks the gravy off his half and Mika eats up the chunks). He also usually gets a small bowl of Butchers classic later i...

Re: Sometimes its kinder to keep your thoughts to yourself!
How rude! I know how upset you must be, I've heard similar lots of times with having pugs (which I think are the most beautiful of dogs). I was really offended when I took Mika to see a new vet last year and the first thing he said was "oh he's cross eyed". He is a little, but you wouldn't...

Re: New cat flap owner
We can't get Jess to use our flap and he's not the most handle able cat so shoving him through is not an option! We tried the string and he goes through fine with it open. A neater way though is to open it then put a clothes peg on the edge of the flap bit so it can't close. If you move the peg clos...

Re: worried - Denzel scratched by FIV positive Stray "Terry"
Hi, I haven't got any FIV experience but just wanted to say me & Mika are thinking about you. We hope Denzel will not have been infected and from the sounds of it it is very very unlikely, but if he has it wont be the end of the world. You have done a wonderful thing for Terry and he didn't mean...

Re: What breed is the cat in the picture, please
The one in the picture is a Birman I'm sure, they have distinctive white feet and dark colour points. Is the link correct? I'm not sure why a Thai would be bred in Russia - should the link have been to something else? A Thai is what some people are calling the more traditional shaped Siamese (Siam i...

Re: Possibly stray cat let it self in, we think it has ticks
Don't worry about Denzel, he's a Siamese, he'll soon be the boss unless he's happy for the other cat to be dominant. He'll certainly hold his own. It's better to have a cat each to cuddle :) Well done on the tip removal. It's great that he trusted you to do that. He's obviously not totally wild. May...

Oh I agree, plead with your mother! I left my pug behind 10 years ago when I moved out of home because my mum was retired and owned his brother! It broke my heart to leave my best friend but it was the best thing to do for him and I made do with visiting them often.

Re: cat words
You have put that better than I did! Yes they are just noises, I don't think they understand the meaning of the words, but they do know what the sounds mean - food, treats, toys, walk (dogs), bedtime, all sorts. As you say, just like they have different meows or chirrups for different things and we ...

Re: Thinking about getting a cat, need advice!
If you can't cat proof your garden and are still worried, you could always look for an older cat who is less likely to go far (our Misty was 10 when we got her and she very rarely left the garden) or I think people keep deaf cats indoors.

Re: cat words
I have a theory that cats and dogs probably understand a fair amount of what is being said but just haven't got the ability to form the words to talk back! Very much like when people move to another country and don't know the language, I've heard that they often learn to understand the spoken langua...

Re: How can I fatten up my very active 2 year old?
Thanks for the replies. I guess I'm worrying about nothing then. Looking back at some photos of Max he was a larger cat I think, so maybe Mika still has some growing up to do or maybe he is just a smaller one so I suppose you can't really go off the weight, rather the shape of him. He likes his meat...

Re: How can I fatten up my very active 2 year old?
I don't want him to be fat, but you can see all of his spine when he lies down sometimes and I was worried that he had lost weight. Max was a lot heavier (~5kg vs 3kg) and he was still very muscular and slim and had a leg less to weigh  He has food down all the time and he does eat it. Maybe it...

How can I fatten up my very active 2 year old?
Last time we took Mika tithe vets he had list a little weight. The vet was not worried and said he probably weighed more previously as he was still growing so his weight had not settled down?!? He is currently eating the best part of 2 sachets of Lidl's Coshida meat in jelly and if he is in the mood...

Same story here! My OH works shifts though so is often getting up at 4:30 or coming in at 6:00 so I can't really expect the cats to understand when it's a weekend and we want a lie in. I found playing with da bird etc for half an hour before bed then leaving plenty of biscuits down for midnight feas...

Re: is your cat as messy as mine? (food)
Mika's food fun is disgusting, you can't breed manners  It's up the walls, its up the door, it's all over the floor, he also does the shaking his head thing and sometimes repeatedly moves a piece to another room to pounce on. Jess on the other hand (ex feral) is quite a tidy little eater. Prob...

Re: Would Kittens Be Detrimental To A Senior Cat?
Hello, it's a tricky question and you know your cat best. My Max was about 14 when his lifelong friend Misty died. We tried after about a year to introduce a young adult female cat that a friend of a friend wanted to rehome. We didn't know what we were doing and it didn't work at all! So, we decided...
