Re: Harry losing weight.

Hi, that hasn’t been mentioned. I’ll talk to the vet about it. The cardio vet thought there might be a link early on with Alfie but was ruled out later on. Harry had a heart scan in June which showed the thickening had lessened and was doing well. He had an abdominal scan last month which looked nor...

Harry losing weight.

We lost 10 yo Alfie last month to suspected lymphoma. He had been diagnosed with severe IBD originally but all treatment failed to help sadly. Now Harry, his littermate, has also been losing weight over the last three to four months,His appetite is up and down and his stools are normal sometimes and...

Re: Alfie

Thank you for your kind comments. It’s been hard watching him fading and the last few days were the worst. The time was right to let him go. His little brother has been looking for him and hiding under the bed so not sure how to help him. I suppose he will adjust in time.

Re: Update on Alfie with colitis and heart issue.

Sadly tonight we had to let Alfie go :( He had been deteriorating since I last posted and on Tuesday morning I found him hiding away in our wardrobe. The vet found he had a high temperature, severe anaemia and enlarged kidneys. They kept him in and gave him fluids, abs and anti inflammatory meds apa...

Re: Update on Alfie with colitis and heart issue.

‘Little lilac- pointed bagpipes’! made me laugh  I didn’t know that about atenolol. He hasn’t been taking them for long so maybe he’s affected by them. This morning he has eaten half a pouch of wainwrights! It’s been weeks since he ate that much, then had a nibble at Harry’s food. Followed by a...

Re: Update on Alfie with colitis and heart issue.

Alfie has just done something unusual for him- a normal looking poo on the floor, then tried to bury it. He was near litter trays so not sure if he couldn’t make it in time? The only other time was when he was passing mucous frequently back in March/April. OH said he looked disorientated.

Re: Update on Alfie with colitis and heart issue.

He likes gourmet solitaire chicken but only licks the sauce. He doesn’t usually like pate but could try a tin and see if he eats it as his appetite is all over the place. Up until a few days ago he loved lickelix, I was hiding his atenolol in it twice a day, but now he won’t touch it :( At the momen...

Re: Update on Alfie with colitis and heart issue.

Hi, he is having normal cat food as his appetite is poor, trying different ones. Grain free wet and a little dry jwb. He has a couple of licks and nibbles then goes and lays down looking miserable.

Re: Update on Alfie with colitis and heart issue.

The specialist vet was against using steroids unless Alfie didn’t improve but the local vet was all for them and was certain they would help the inflammation and make Alfie feel better. But it hasn’t made a difference so he’ll be weaned off them. The appetite stimulants helped in the beginning a few...

Re: Update on Alfie with colitis and heart issue.

Alfie has been taking steroids for just over a week and he seems to have become worse again. His appetite is almost non existant again which I think is unusual- steroids are meant to increase appetite? and more lethargic. I gave him an appetite stimulant on Sunday to try and get him eating again. He...

Re: Update on Alfie with colitis and heart issue.

Thank you for your best wishes for Alfie. He’s enjoying the sunshine on a slightly cooler day today. Not his usual self yet, not eating much still. Don’t know how long the steroids take to have an affect.

Re: Update on Alfie with colitis and heart issue.

Alfie is now taking steroids. He had seemed to be feeling a bit better after he came home from the vet hospital and was eating more. But over the past week he has been spending his days mostly on a pile of blankets in the kitchen when he wasn’t mooching around slowly. His appetite dropped again desp...

Re: Update on Alfie with colitis and heart issue.

Yes so would I, even our usual vet was surprised. It seems the specialist vet wants to wait a couple of weeks before resorting to steroids. I’m to report back next week on Alfie’s progress, then he will decide whether to prescribe them or not.

Re: Update on Alfie with colitis and heart issue.

Hi Kay, Alfie quite likes the JWB lamb but I’m wondering about more unusual meat like venison etc.. although while his appetite is not good I give him what he will eat, like the JWB or wainwrights, cooked fish which he loves.

Re: Update on Alfie with colitis and heart issue.

Hi booktigger, yes a huge relief. I was surprised that steroids weren’t prescribed but the vet wanted to see if he improved at home with the stimulants. He’ll only start steroids if he doesn’t put on weight and appetite drops back again. I’ve not dealt with IBD before so I’m a bit nervous about what...

Update on Alfie with colitis and heart issue.

Alfie has been diagnosed with severe ibd by a specialist vet, not lymphoma as he expected it to be thank goodness. After 3 days of tests he was allowed home with some appetite stimulants but no steroids yet. These worked well for a few days and the diarrhoea stopped as he ate almost normally- never ...

Re: Colitis and heart issue.

He wouldn’t tolerate syringe feeding although it seems an obvious way to get food into him. I tried once yesterday by blending some of his food adding a pinch of protexin and water but he was having none of it. :(

Re: Colitis and heart issue.

I’ve got all the flavours of lickelix and Alfie will only eat a tiny bit of the salmon. He won’t touch the putty which PG now has his pill in. Yesterday I bought some pilchards to see if that would tempt him, warmed a little, but no. The nose was twitching but he wouldn’t try it, his brother polishe...

Re: Colitis and heart issue.

Thanks Lilith, I’ve just ordered some on amazon as pah don’t have it. I have to agree the vets on the whole are useless. Re: Colitis and heart issue.

Hi, yes it is tricky. It’s been very distressing for both Alfie and us. I won’t be taking him back so the course (abs) won’t be finished. He actually managed to eat a little this morning including some crushed atenolol in lickelix mixed in so that was good to see. He is a stressy cat at the best of ...

Re: Colitis and heart issue.

Update: feeling very worried and frustrated. Alfie hasn’t really picked up much since I first posted. The vet suggested a course of vitamin b injections as his levels were low, which seemed to perk him up a little and his appetite improved a little but the diarrhoea continued. Giving pills (antibiot...

Re: Colitis and heart issue.

Thanks :) Having read the link Antonio sent it sounds promising, hope the smell doesn’t put Alfie off if it’s that strong. I’ll have to check if it interacts with his meds too. The vet seems very anti using any supplements ie probiotics, not sure why. So slippery elm would probably be a no no too. I...

Re: Colitis and heart issue.

Thanks for the links, very useful. Anyone else on the forum used slippery elm for their cats ibs? Your cats name is cute b...
