Re: My cat needs a new home

It would help if you post again in the "Homes Needed" section, and put your location in the title of the post. And in the post, say a little about your cat, e.g. how old he is, is he neutered, does he live indoors or is he used to going out. People here would like to help, but need more in...

Re: adopting an older cat

When I lived in a city centre flat, I didn't get much bother from flies. Now I have a house with a garden, and a lot of green space at the back, I see a lot more. One result of this is that I've invested in microchip-reading cat feeders, that cover the food when the cat moves away. Before I did that...

Re: Hi new cat owner flipping out

When you took him to the vet, did he get de-wormed? A worm burden will make a cat hungry, but the food won't do him good. If it's not that, then it sounds like he does just need to eat a lot. He's a big cat, and still growing, so the "average" guidelines on the packet won't apply. With reg...

Re: giving meds

I once minded a friend's cat while she was away. He was on meds, so I had to go through the same routine once a day, and had no one to hold him. One time, he fooled me into thinking he had swallowed the pill (fortunately they were quite small) but when I let him go, he spat it out. As it rolled away...

Re: New friend for bereaved cat?

Thanks, all. Alanc, the breeder's website says: "We will require you to sign a simple contract to transfer the ownership of the kitten and to ensure that the kitten will be well taken care of." I assume that neutering will be part of the deal, but that's something I can check in more detai...

Wow, thank you for all the interest! Still no comments about Feliway to help introductions, but if I search the forum I expect I'll find more info. bobbys girl: Many years ago I went to a cat show. I really wanted to browse the trade stands, but also there was a section for Bengals, which I'd read a...

Re: My cat needs to go on a diet :(

Have you tried him with the special cat milk? It's probably fairly high in calories, but it would get liquid into him, and you could always cut the purina down (or out) to compensate. Or if he must have some dry food, try to find one that he doesn't like so much? :)

Re: My cat needs to go on a diet :(

I had a cat (Robin) who was somewhat overweight at 6.5kg. Originally I fed him wet food, and I never saw him drink. Then he got bad teeth, and had to have several removed. The vet recommended feeding him a special dry food with large kibbles, which would help keep his remaining teeth clean. When he ...

Nanny, I don't know Kafka's story, but he looks like a jackdaw. I believe, like most members of the crow family, they are very intelligent.

Bob looks lovely, very dignified and worldly-wise.

Re: New friend for bereaved cat?

Thanks, Lilith. Bridie has influenced me to like long-haired torties! But Bridie was quite small, and Ria is a Norwegian Forest Cat, so she's likely to be big. I had a twinge of guilt about buying a pedigree cat, instead of adopting. But the 4 cats I have owned so far were all rescue moggies, so I d...

Re: New friend for bereaved cat?

I've taken the decision, and reserved a kitten, although she won't be old enough to come to me until the end of August (when she'll be 13 weeks). I hope that by then Rocky will be used to Bridie not being around, but not too set in his new situation as an only cat. I'm now keeping Rocky out of my sp...

Re: Frightened Dave

I haven't been in exactly this situation. But my feeling is, whatever is wrong, if the cat can sleep, I'd let him sleep as long as he wants, and try not to disturb him. Sleep is a great restorative. It might be a good idea to keep him in for a few days. At least, watch him to see if he really wants ...

Re: New friend for bereaved cat?

Thanks, Crewella. My previous two cats, and Rocky, were/ are all "tuxedo" b/w. I have nothing against that, and if I lived in a world where all cats were tabby, I'd probably look for the b/w. But since cats come in such a range of lovely colours (and coat types) it seems ungrateful not to ...

Re: New friend for bereaved cat?

I've always liked the idea of having 2 cats so that they can entertain one another. With the last pair I adopted, I had them for 11 years before the older one died. At that point I felt that the remaining one was too set in her ways to want or need an incomer, and I kept her alone for the remaining ...

Re: New friend for bereaved cat?

Thanks for the input, everyone. I'll give it thought, and watch Rocky's behaviour. Bridie was the "prettiest" cat I've ever had. At the risk of sounding shallow, I had real pleasure from her individual markings and lovely semi-long coat, and it's frustrating to have had such a short time t...

New friend for bereaved cat?

I adopted Rocky & Bridie (male & female, both neutered) at the end of last year. They were about 6 years old, and had been together for a long time. (Although I don't think they're related.) Two days ago I had to have Bridie euthanised. Rocky is now restless and prowling, clearly missing her...

Re: Two cats in one stroller?

Thank you for the good wishes. Rocky has been restless today, probably wondering where Bridie has gone. But it's a cool evening, so I lit a fire, and now he has relaxed in front of the hearth. Rocky and Bridie have always been together, so I don't know if he'd take to another cat. In any case, I nee...

Re: Two cats in one stroller?

The problem is resolved, but not the way I would have wanted. I was concerned because Bridie was eating very little and was rather lethargic. Turns out it was a large tumour in her chest, pressing on her lungs and inoperable.

RIP Bridie.

Re: Two cats in one stroller?

Thanks, Lilith, all info on the subject is appreciated. I've been thinking that a solid box on some kind of trolley would be a better bet than a fabric-bodied stroller, if I go the 2-at-once route.

Your black cats obviously had no phobias about the carrier! :)

Re: Two cats in one stroller?

Thanks for the input. I think the actual bike trailer would be too bulky to get through the doors into the surgery and the examination room. They're designed for dogs, where you just park the trailer, put a lead on the dog and get him out. Cats, obviously, have to remain contained until you actually...

Two cats in one stroller?

I adopted two adult cats, six months ago. They had always been together, and are good friends. One of them is poorly, and when I took her to the vets, she became stressed, making it harder to diagnose the original problem. I wondered if it would help if I took both cats in at the same time, so that ...

Re: New owner

If you can, get the cat's own scratching post from the previous owner, as it will be a comfort to the cat in a new place, and she's more likely to use that than a new one. Some cats will scratch furniture, but I find it best, rather than just stopping them from doing it, to move them on to their pro...

Re: Can i have a cat and work full time?

When I was in your position some years ago (with the added complication that I lived in a flat with no garden) I chose to have 2 cats, for just that reason, to keep each other company. I found two who, although not long-term pals, had been housed together by my local shelter, so I could see that the...
