Re: Hi everyone, first time cat owner here

It might be worth trying to do some of the training when the others aren't using the litter tray,so she doesnt' associated the two quite so much. It might also be possible to teach her to sit ( I know this may sound odd with a cat, but it can be done) and then wait a few seconds for her treat. Peopl...

Re: Amazing Cats: Bump Stops

Of course it could just be Saturn being lazy and not jumping up properly. I've only really noticed it in the bathroom as he is inches away from me when he lands on the windowsill and it is a nice right angled edge he is jumping on.

Re: Amazing Cats: Bump Stops

Not quite the style of jump I was thinking about, Saturn gets to the windowsill all in one jump, but until he is there he can't see if anything is on the windowsill which is why i wonder if keeping the back paws on the wall is their way of handling a situation if there is no room to land. Still nice...

Re: Hi everyone, first time cat owner here

If she is so intelligent, have you considered clicker training her, you might be able to use the clicker and a treat to distract her from the litter tray. Clicker training is normally used for dogs, but a cat can be just as good at it as long as you have a incentive they actually want to have, some ...

Re: Amazing Cats: Bump Stops

That film is really interesting, and makes me so glad i don't see that every time any of my cats jump off something. Another thought, one that has come to me recently as Saturn has started to come into the bathroom and sit on the windowsill while I'm on the loo, is when he jumps on to the windowsill...

Re: Did I do the right thing?

You did the right thing, and it is perfectly normal to feel guilty and question yourself afterwards, that is all part of the grieving process. No vet I have ever known will opt for euthanasia if there is other option available that has at least a reasonable chance of helping the animal. The way you ...

Re: Fleas, help needed!

While no use for the cattery issue, there are a couple of things I want to mention. While I would never put a flea collar on a cat, one tip i have heard is to put half of one in your hoover bag or cylinder, that way any flea eggs that get hoovered up and remain in the bag or even in the cylinder aft...

Re: Burmese Cats Quandry

I have to agree that if the cats are happy where they are then you have nothing to be guilty about, in fact you should be proud of yourself, you have put their welfare first. It's going back a good number of years now, but at the time I had a mother and daughter cat, the mother was diagnosed with a ...

Re: Hi everyone, first time cat owner here

I have to say, having watched the clip a couple of times it does strike me as just normal cat interactions and them sorting out what is what. Spaska's ears were only laid back at one point that I noticed, most of the time they were forward which as far as I know, indicates she wasn't really consider...

Re: Hi everyone, first time cat owner here

I still remember when a female cat adopted my parents and then brought us 4 kittens, those kittens were rehomed when they reached 6 weeks with the exception of one that we kept, now I cringe to think of rehoming a kitten at 6 weeks, but that was how things were back then and there is no point in wor...

Re: Hi everyone, first time cat owner here

I've known a few long haired cats, my own Ragdoll, Blue, a friends Persian from many years ago and a few long haired moggies as well, and there did seem to be one thing they all had in common, they may have been at the front of the queue when fur was being handed out, but they were at the back when ...

Re: Covered litter boxes

Its because they are designed by people who never have cats and believe that by putting a little cat flap on the front it will turn it into a private toilet area that all cats will love, and the little bit of flapping plastic will keep all smells in side and only allow them out of the vents in the t...

Re: BEST CAT LITTER?

A lot of it is personal preference and the cat preference. Several years ago when my Mum had to go into a home i took in her old cat. My Mum told me that she wouldn't use a litter tray and insisted on using the garden in all weathers, as I knew she had to be kept in for a month of so, i was prepared...

i've used several so perhaps can give some ideas and options. Catsan Clumping litter, rather expensive, clay based, and dusty. It will glue the clumps to the litter try if the cat goes at the edges or if the litter level gets low. it did however have one of the best odour controls i've come across. ...

Re: Stubborn indoor cat pooping in mulch

Unfortunately some cats do seem to prefer to do the natural thing and go outside regardless of how many or how clean the trays inside are. As you have found out they can be very persistent if they decide they want to toilet outside, in a way it is lucky your cat has found an area he is happy to use ...

Our old kitties are hard on us, we always want to do what is best, but sometimes aren't sure what that is. My golden oldie, Tiggy, is also about 18 years old and has been on palliative care for a few years, we decided at the time we wouldn't put her through a load of tests thinking she only had a fe...

I'm in the UK and it is one of the things I disagree with my vet on, and if I ever get a kitten i know there is another vet that will spay or neuter at 13 weeks, and it will be the one time i will choose to go elsewhere. I know about that vet as it is the one the charity i got my two youngsters from...

Whether they have a 'sixth sense' or not, I'm not sure, but they certainly have some better senses than we do, and make use of them. Like Mollycat says, scent plays a far larger part in their lives than it does in ours so picking up changes in scent is one obvious explanation. Even I tend to use sce...

I'm still following this and wishing you all the best with Spaska and Milla, and hoping this is the start of Milla telling Spaska what is what and enough is enough. I have heard of single kitten syndrome, but i'm not sure just how much actual research has gone into it. As has been said, a kitten left alone all day while you are at work with nothing to entertain it might have problems, particularly if taken away from its family too young, but in your circumstanc...

Another one done, and I entered Unknown for the breeds, after all he is just a general moggy not a specific breed, like fjm says, Domestic Shorthair would be the correct label.

I'm not entirely sure it is Stomatitis, it might just be bad Gingivitis, but i would say she does need a dental done regardless. Even if all that is needed is a good cleaning it does mean the vet can really check the teeth out properly. The grinding, in my mind is probably a loose tooth, which is gr...

Tiggy is about 17 years old, we had her 15 years ago and she was an adult cat then, so she might even be older, so we know it is only a matter of time, we just want to minimise any risks we can for her and to give her as good a life as possible for how ever long she has left. Re: Do cats need jabbing?

The general opinion is in favour of annual booster vaccinations and most vets will do a general check up at the same time. Even if your cats are kept inside all the time, there is always a possibility of you bringing a virus into the house when you go out. Personally I couldn't live with myself if o...

Wonderful to hear, I'm so glad Milla is feeling better, even if Spaska is taking it as a sign she can be even more annoying to her. That photo of Caspar and Spaska is gorgeous, it can be surprising just how well an adult male cat can handle a kitten, sometimes they just seem to know what to do.

I can't really help with those, when my Parents had a diabetic cat they just used test strips occasionally once it was stabilised. Re: Found a month old stray kitten and brought it home, now what?

While she may still be a bit wary of using a litter box while Spaska is around, I do not think that rehoming Spaska is a matter of urgency, particularly as you have been unable to find a home suitable for her. Leaving her to live as a stray, with no real home and being fed as and when would be more ...

You are grieving for the death of a family member, (people who don't have pets don't always understand just how much...
