Re: Chronic diarrhoea help

Years ago both my cats went down with chronic diarrhoea, many many trips to vet and fecal tests inconclusive. I tried them on fish and rice....... and it came out the other end as fish and rice!! Gave up on that one pretty quick, and yes, they mostly ate around the rice. In our case the vet decided ...

Re: Cat Proofing

Just to add a bit more info to the thread, I used Purrfect Fencing, which has a spring loaded angled overhang bracket, so if the cat tries to climb round the overhang on fixed brackets (and I know of at least one cat that does this regularly), with this product the end of the bracket drops down and ...

Re: Anyone ever find blood in faeces?

I think it is happening because of hard stools. Look at the food of your cat. Maybe something is wrong with food. The cat has liquid stools, not hard stools. Given that this has happened so soon after the last episode if it was me I’d be back to the vets for more tests. This shouldn’t be happening,...

Re: Cat scared of me after vet visit - advice please

Some cats do get very stressed after a fight, (if that’s what happened), and with the added stress of a vet visit, he’s probably having a bit of a melt down. I would just let him come round in his own time, but keep a careful eye on him to make sure his symptoms don't get worse. You could put food a...

Re: New kitten

Hi there, don’t worry, he’s just a baby and this is all very new and scary to him, and he doesn’t have his mum or siblings to reassure him. So he needs your help to settle in - he’s not there to entertain you, it’s your job to finish raising him. Most reputable breeders feel 8 weeks is too young to ...

Re: Indoor/Outdoor Kitty and Day Lily Plants/Toxic Plants

I’ve had day lilies in my garden for over 25 years without incident. While I knew lilies in general were highly poisonous to cats, I hadn’t realised that included day lilies. However, I've decided it’s not worth the risk and will be digging them up and replacing them with something more benign. The ...

Re: 1 year old cat mystery ailment

Hi and welcome. I’m sorry to hear what you and your boy have been going through. It sounds pretty baffling, but it also sounds like your vets are doing all they can to get to the bottom of this. I had wondered whether it was neurological but if the pain meds are making a difference, it sounds more l...

Thanks Mollycat. Interesting what you say re vaccination updates, my vets have always been pretty relaxed if they’re a bit overdue. I will try to follow the vaccine vs HyperT debate. I’ve often wondered the same about flea and worm treatments. I only do mine if they look like they’ve actually got fl...

Hi again Desley, hank heaven there are people like you who are prepared to take on the “problem” cats, give them each a fuss from me. Thanks both, I’ll keep an eye on it for a bit longer. He had a really bad reaction to his vaccinations last year just before I picked him up from rescue, so he arrived with a nasty gunky eye. He was good as gold letting me treat it though. Luckily we didn’t get that this time. Mitz was off colour fo...

Lump after vaccination

Toby had his vaccinations last week, and since then I've found a soft lump under his skin about thumb nail size which is obviously tender as he doesn't like me checking it. I suspect the injection caused this, as I can't think of anything else and there's no broken skin. Has anyone else come across ...

Re: Should I adopt a cat?

I'm afraid I'm going to agree with Lilith. I look after a neighbour's cats when they go away for the odd week here and there during school holidays, and despite being in their own home and having garden access, they are depressed and anxious when the owners are away, despite me making a fuss of them...

Late to this thread, I'm so sorry to hear about your cat's diagnosis. I lost my much adored 7 year old boy very suddenly some years ago. Very long story but he had been a bit off colour for a while but not obviously ill. It was only on my insistence that the vet did bloods which indicated a liver pr...

Re: Kitten became aggressive

Good advice from Ruth B, he needs to learn from you what's ok and what isn't, as his mum and siblings aren't there to tell him off. In addition, try to avoid close contact rough play, as it will just encourage him. Remote toys, such as things on strings or sticks, or toys to chase, are a safer way o...

Re: Ragdoll defecating on sofa/bed

I agree, something has upset them, and you need to get to the bottom of what that is. Pooing anywhere but their tray is usually a cry for help or a protest. Please avoid the temptation to get cross with them - there's no point. It will only add to their stress and they will have no idea why, in thei...

Re: Cat pacing and very reduced appetite

I've read your earlier post, and your dear old puss really has a lot to deal with. I have seen this pacing in cats with advanced kidney failure, it's very distressing to see, and loss of appetite could be due to the deterioration in one or more of her many medical conditions. I really would speak to...

Re: Old cat, no stools

I would get her checked at the vets asap. While it may (or may not) have been going on for a while, eating so little is not a good sign. There may be an underlying reason why she is eating so little, and/or not producing stools, and this needs investigating.

I've had cats that always prefer to come inside and use the litter tray, and others that will only toilet outside whatever the weather. You can't force the issue, it's just the way some cats are. Cats will only toilet where they feel safe, and if she's always been a house cat and being outside is ne...

Re: Our seemingly healthy cat dies suddenly. Still trying to figure out what happened!?

Sudden and premature deaths are always a terrible shock. I lost one to liver cancer at age 7. He looked so healthy the vet wouldn't believe me when I said I thought there was something wrong, and he was climbing trees the day he died. It was only the post mortem that found the cancer. I lost another...

You're reaping the benefit of having bonded with them so well! I really wouldn't see this as a problem, as their confidence in the wider world develops they'll become less dependent on you, but far better the situation you have than cats that avoid you. I do sympathise though, my little lad Toby (14...

He needs lots of reassurance right now, to help him recover and c...

Re: Obsessive carpet pulling following loss of litter mate

Cats definitely do grieve, I've seen it in mine many times. It often starts with them going to the place where their former friend was last in the house and spending time there, just as your boy did by the graveside, and then they seem to go through a gradual acceptance. Sometimes they seem to adjus...
