Blackie's Luxating Patella

The diagnosis from the vet hospital to which Blackie was referred shows that Blackie has a luxating patella in his right hind leg. This is what is causing the pain and lameness in the leg. More extensive x-rays done by the Neurological Dept did not show anything untoward in his spine or hips. The lu...

Re: Not good news for Blackie ... or us

Poor Blackie - did she say what the treatment would be? Will doing an MRI change that? if not, I'd ask to skip it, after putting my similarly natured cat through a lot of travelling for an unnecessary CT scan. Spoke to a vet today to tell them that the symptoms Blackie is showing all seem indicativ...

Re: Not good news for Blackie ... or us

Had a call this morning from Sarah who told me they couldn't get near him to take some blood - Blackie was fighting like a demon - so would it ok for them to go straight to anaesthetic? Blackie is like a wild animal if strangers try to do something with him. I told her to do whatever necessary as th...

Re: Not good news for Blackie ... or us

Thanks to one and all for the good wishes. Due to Blackie still having pain yesterday we phoned the hospital again and without me having to ask, Sarah (vet) told me to bring him in as they would better be able to control his pain and contain him in their hospital cattery. He had looked so miserable ...

Re: Not good news for Blackie ... or us

Oh my goodness, poor Blackie. :( Please do keep an eye on him and make sure he's weeing. Can you keep him in a room with you, equipped with a litter tray? If he's drinking and not managing to wee (which should still be possible, even if he really can't bend down and ends up spraying somewhere) afte...

Re: Not good news for Blackie ... or us

So ... perhaps your close encounter with him the other day just exacerbated an already existing condition? A cat without that wonky nerve might have just yelled, jumped away, washed and there'd have been an end to it? It would be good to think that since that first episode calmed down by itself, so...

Not good news for Blackie ... or us

As episodes continued of Blackie having pain when squatting to urinate or just walking, we took him to a different vet this afternoon as our usual vet is not open on a Sunday. He had a thorough examination with the vet and a nurse pulling his leg this way and that with Blackie acting like a wild ani...

Re: Trod on Blackie's paw

^^^ The candle incident must have been awful for you and your cat. Glad it all ended well and thank you for the reassurance that in the end all will be well. Certainly hope so and no x-ray is needed. Blackie greeted me this morning with a roll around the floor, got up and went to walk towards me but...

Re: Trod on Blackie's paw

Thanks guys for your support. Not sure we got much out of the hospital visit. The vet put Blackie on the floor so that she could see him walk which he did, slowly and without limping. She then manipulated both legs but when she got to the problem paw, Blackie let it be known loud and clear that he d...

Re: Trod on Blackie's paw

Thanks Lilith. We're going to take Blackie to the vet hospital this afternoon. He used his litter tray a little while ago and when he walked back towards the lounge I heard him howling in pain again in spite of having given him 4 hours ago the amount of Metacam suggested by the local vet. Just befor...

Trod on Blackie's paw

Last night while I was preparing a bowl of food for Blackie, I must have stepped backwards and trod on his right back paw ... at least think that's what happened. First thing I knew about it was when he started making a terrible howling noise - clearly in a lot of pain and limping badly as couldn't ...

Re: Blackie is not himself ....

Thanks for checking back, meriad I'm pleased to report that Blackie seems be a lot better since Saturday evening. Apart from the Canikur Pro, the vet had also advised giving him some boiled chicken to stimulate his appetite. This went down very well ... so well that when I went back into the kitchen...

Blackie is not himself ....

.... after a 3+half week cattery stay. We picked him up on Tuesday and all seemed fine ... he seemed to quickly recognise where the kitchen was, where his bed was located upstairs and he had an excellent appetite that day. We thought he might miss his 'Auntie Linda' at the cattery and the safety of ...

Re: Kidney disease and diet

my vet swears by Semintra. He says it stops the disease in its tracks, but I have since read that it is only suitable for cats who are losing protein in their urine (proteinuria) but I really don't know. Clapton wasn't generally a fussy eater, but he point blank refused to eat renal pouches. He ate...

Re: Stress head !!

That's good news Didi. Very nervy cats (such as Bilbo and our Blackie) need at least 5/7 days treatment with Zylkene for it to really kick in. Have to say though that it doesn't seem to make a lot of difference to Blackie once he's in his cat basket.

Re: Kidney disease and diet

Initially we tried Blackie on the RC renal food but he wouldn't eat it and I ended up feeling very stressed over it. He would happily lick up the juice but that's all. As Blackie was at early stage CKD the vet decided that letting him eat his favourite food (Felix AGAIL) with added Ipakitine was the...

Didi - you could also try Pet Remedy spray or plug-ins if you haven't already done so. I can give a personal recommendation as the smell makes me feel relaxed - not sure about Blackie though!

Re: Xanax ... anyone given this to their cat?

Thank you for the fusses Helen - will pass them on. However, we've had a change of plan - Blackie will be going to 'his' cattery for 3 weeks or so while we return to our house in Kent to 'blitz the loft' of all the rubbish that's up there. We have some life decisions to make soon and my OH felt that...

Re: Xanax ... anyone given this to their cat?

From what you say Didi, I wonder that our vet here in NSomerset hasn't suggested Xanax in the past  Like Bilbo, Blackie is an anxious/nervy cat - can't fight his way out of a paper bag when it comes to other tom cats. Probably need some Xanax myself as I feel anxious about moving him to a hous...

Re: Xanax ... anyone given this to their cat?

Thanks for yr reassuring reply Didi. Our vet advised to give only 1 quarter of the tablet before travelling. I think I'll ask her it would be ok to give him further quarters when we get home - depending on how he reacts. The last thing I want is a recurrence of his stress related cystitis though I'm...

Xanax ... anyone given this to their cat?

We shortly have to move back to our own home in Kent and as well as the usual vet's advice to give Cystophan 2 + 1 Zyklene x day before travelling and once we get back, I also asked her if there was anything else we could give to lower Blackie's stress levels during car travel (3 hrs). Vet advised 1...

Re: Sub Q

I've read something about fish intake somewhere and it's not supposed to be great for them. Luckily Murray prefers the meat ones (at the moment anyway!). The vet asked me to leave the room when they did his bloods on Monday. Is that normal? Maybe I'm not informed enough but is there much more they ...

Re: Sub Q

I continually ask our vet if I should get Blackie to eat the renal food but her answer, at least at this stage, is no, not yet - give him what he will be happiest eating. Doubt I could get him to eat it anyway - I've tried ... about 1 pouch a week is all he will tolerate - though he seems to like th...

Didi ... I feel for you, I really do as you are where I was almost 2+half years ago with our cat, Blackie. So I really do hope that the end result is as happy as the one that we had. hello pricey42 ... Stage 2 CKD is the Iris Stage II - our Blackie may be slipping into Stage II ... a urine test in a few weeks will give a clearer idea.
