Re: Blackie in trouble again with his bladder

Not sure whether Blackie's bladder issue is sorted or not tbh. He hasn't urinated on the floor again but is refusing to use his tray. I knew this morning he was desperate to go out and when I delayed opening the door, he got in his tray, left a few paw marks but nothing else. So I let him out and sa...

Re: Blackie in trouble again with his bladder

Helen .. you can now uncross paws! Result showed no infection, only a tiny amount of grit/stones in his bladder - nothing to worry about. His USG was slightly below normal but vet said result could be misleading because he has so much added warmed water to his food. She didn't seem concerned about i...

Re: Blackie is making himself bleed again ....

When I took Blackie's urine sample in this morning, I asked the vet if the urinating on the floor is due to stress was that tied up with licking his belly fur off, but she gave a very non-committal answer .. not yes, nor a definite no. I'm worried its becoming compulsive.

Re: Blackie in trouble again with his bladder

Pleased to say Blackie provided a sample sometime last night which we whizzed round to the vets first thing this morning. Am awaiting results.

Re: Blackie in trouble again with his bladder

Good luck is what we need, that's for sure. He has used Katkor before with no problem at all when a urine sample was required so am hoping that eventually he will co-operate. He may well have urinated outdoors somewhere today - least I'm hoping he did. At the moment I know he probably wants to pee b...

Blackie in trouble again with his bladder

We found 2 puddles on the floor over the weekend - one in the hall, and another huge pee behind the sofa on Sunday morning. Alarm bells rang immediately - Blackie is an extremely clean cat - he'd rather pee in a tray with no litter in it than on the floor. He also jumped on top of a bush that would ...

Re: Blackie is making himself bleed again ....

  Trouble is, we've grown to love him so much over the past 2 years. The vet agreed with me when I spoke to her a couple of days ago on the phone that it wouldn't be a good idea to give this liquid by mouth - it would stress him out too much. She suggested adding 1ml per day to his meals u...

Hi Julie ... what you said about garden proofing to stop other cats coming into the garden and worrying Barney reminded me that our garden isn't cat proofed. I know that Blackie has been stressed by other cats coming into our garden in the past, but putting a high fence all around the garden (and it...

Re: BARNEYS CYSTITIS - NEVER ENDING WORRYINGPROBLEM - WHAT N

Hello Julie ... I really do feel so much for what you're going through. Though (everything x'd here) Blackie seems now to have overcome his cystitis probs (with the definite help of 1 x Cystophan per day and plenty of added warmed water to his food), I know exactly how panicked you feel. This mornin...

Hi Helen (it is Helen?) Not kidding you .. when we pack the car, its like packing for a child as far as the cat's stuff goes :D Bowls, cushions he sleeps on, two blankets - scratching mat (he's never used the scratching post my mother bought him) 2 litter trays and surrounding mats, not to mention h...

Re: Blackie is making himself bleed again ....

I've tried everything to minimize Blackie's stress ... the vet here in NS suggested upping his cystophan to 2 x day for 5 days before the journey and 5 days after arrival, as well as giving him Zyklene twice a day for the same period. I spray his basket profusely with Feliway in the hope that he'll ...

Re: Blackie is making himself bleed again ....

We managed to get down to NSomerset on Saturday night and took Blackie in to see the local vet this morning. Firstly, she weighed Blackie - 5.53kg - he'd gone up 0.4kg since January but she didn't seem bothered about this particularly. The first real discussion was about Blackie's early stage kidney...

Re: Blackie is making himself bleed again ....

Due to circs beyond our control, it seems we may not now be going down to NSomerset until next Tuesday which means I'll probably be taking Blackie back to our local vet before the w/end. Blackie was given Comfortis last year when he had a scratching problem as I usually use Advocate but we were told...

Here we go round the merry-go-round once more. Just a week after having his Dexafort, he's back scratching the same spot again .. this is about the same length of time after the previous injection - ok for a week, then back to scratching. Some fur is growing over part of it, but a new, small bald pa...

Re: Advocate?

We give Blackie Advocate every 4-5 weeks, but I queried the use of Milbemax every 3 months with the vet who said as the cat is a hunter, then 3 monthly Milbemax is advisable. She told me a 8-10 day gap between the 2 treatments was fine.

Re: Blackie is making himself bleed again ....

Happy to read that Mama Puss was ok ... I know about rushing a cat to the emergency vet - as we did on Easter Sunday at 11pm last year because I was sure (and terrified) that Blackie was having cystitis troubles again 2 weeks after his first critical bout. After an hour's wait, we were reassured Bla...

Re: Blackie is making himself bleed again ....

We were in a 'life or death' situation with Blackie's stress related cystitis back in early April 2014 when I had no knowledge about the condition at all or symptoms. Poor little mite must have been in such discomfort/pain and I felt terrible for not realising it sooner. Fortunately there were no st...

Re: Blackie is making himself bleed again .... update 11/5

Took Blackie back to the vets this morning. Some fur has grown back but due to a very small scab having formed in a different place on the bald patch, which meant he has scratched himself again since she last saw him 2 weeks ago, another shot of Dexafort was given. She examined him for fleas + ear m...

Re: Should I help my cat protect her space?

I've no hesitation in protecting Blackie's space which is our (and his) garden. We have a bully cat who lives opposite. For some reason the owners never let their cat out into their own garden so it has to wander across the road into someone else's garden). They were in this neighbour's garden at th...

Re: Blackie is making himself bleed again ....

Have you tried a short stint in a comfy collar to allow the scab time to heal over properly? The one time Blackie had a collar on him for a bald patch he'd scratched over one of his eyes, he became so stressed - panting and continually walking backwards to try and get it off, that we removed it. At...

Ah no, I am sorry to hear he is scratching again! Are you sure it wasn't just to take the scab off? Is he still scratching? I would follow vet advice on this. I told the story on your other thread of a severe case, which turned out to be a different allergy. From what you said, your vet seems very ...

Blackie is making himself bleed again ....

On another thread about bald spots on cats, my last post indicated that I believed the scratching allergy with Blackie had been cured with Dexafort as it was on the last occasion. Wrote too soon... I caught him scratching again this morning and he's taken the scab off that was forming on one of the ...

Re: Bald patch on cat

The vet also thinks that long-term use of steroids isn't a good idea either. She gave him a shot of Delvosteron last year for his persistent scratching after the another vet at the same practice had given him two other steroid injections (on separate occasions) which failed to work. Within 3/4 days ...

Re: Bald patch on cat

Jan, if Blackie has had Convenia before then he should be fine having it again. The only problem with it is that if ere IS an allergic reaction (like any of us can get to any drug) it is impossible to remove it from the system. If you are allergic to penicillin and take a tablet of it, you will be ...

Re: BARNEYS ILL WITH BLADDER PROBLE YET AGAIN.....AN UPDATE

Hello again Julie. Based on the last minor episode in early January of Blackie not urinating in his tray for 2 nights, I wouldn't bet against Barney being 'put out' by the smell of the paint and perhaps you'd moved a few things around? The only reason we and the vet could think of as to why Blackie ...

Re: BARNEYS ILL WITH BLADDER PROBLE YET AGAIN.....SO ANNOYED

Sorry to hear the problems are still ongoing Julie. I know how difficult it is not to stress over this issue. I was a wreck this time last year. The vet recommended Cystophan for Blackie rather than anything else because it contains L-tryptophan - a calming agent (which is also in the Hills food). H...
