Panic!!! Not neutered!!!
Hi all, Our new shelter kittens were meant to come neutered, but the RSPCA thought the foster person had done it, and the foster person thought the RSPCA had done it! I thought they weren't exhibiting normal behaviour, but put it down to them being older than the last time we adopted kittens. Thankf...

Shower question
So, my new kittens (still unnamed, latest in the running is 'Mischief and Mayhem' or 'Ripley and Ash') are being as bonkers as ever. One trick that has happened is they are mad keen on the shower, and I don't mean they enjoy a quick wash. Our shower is over the bath, so the shower curtain is always ...

Re: Adoption: shelter or private sale?
"Anyway - maybe shelters take their time getting back to you to make sure they are talking to people who are serious and not trying to adopt on a whim without really thinking it through?" Well, in my case it lost them a potential owner who could not contemplate being catless for another w...

Re: Kitten chaos
Congrats on the new kittens, sure they will settle in in time. Other end of the age spectrum, but I remember thinking I knew all about elderly cats when I took Misty on, having just had my c18 year old Sally put to sleep. Misty soon showed how wrong I was! I can imagine. They're all so very differe...

Kitten chaos
Ooo!!! So frustrating. We have two 20 week old kittens, brother and sister and very close. It's been 18 years ago we adopted Backy and Twitch as kittens, so I figured we knew everything. Turns out 18 years ago is a long time, and 20 weeks is a lot different to 10 weeks (or maybe even 5 weeks) that B...

Adoption: shelter or private sale?
Hi all, The last of our cats, Backy, died a few weeks ago and we were absolutely devastated. It's been driving me mad keep thinking I see him, and miss him terribly. We both intended to adopt again, and, even though it might be a bit soon, we're doing it this week as I'm on annual leave. So, we deci...

Smudge - time running out? (Teesside area)
Hi all, Smudge apparently needs a home by 17th September as his family are getting evicted :( He's 15 so obviously no-one is rushing in, but he's meant to be an affectionate cat. I'd take him on, but we're looking at adopting a pair of cats who can't be separated (just as difficult to re-home), the ...

Re: He's gone
I've been having to deal with some teenage anti-social behaviour at work. This morning I knew I'd have to deal with it all over again today. I looked for Backy to cheer me up, but he just wasn't there.

He's gone
I found Backy dead this morning. He's been getting thinner for the last few months, but has only been very ill for the last week. So now we have no cats. We'd had Backy and Twitch for 18 and 16 years. The place will seem empty now. I hope they visit me in my dreams.

Re: Elderly cat behaviour before death
Thanks Mollycat A wise reminder - cats love to mess with your head :) Just when you think you know what's wrong or what's going to happen, they go an do something utterly unexpected. Apparently the blood test also covered diabetes, hyperthyroid and something else, and all were fine. Last night I tho...

Re: Elderly cat behaviour before death
Thanks both. I looked online as vet's cat laxative wasn't working. The suggestion was milk, so I tried it out and Backy is no longer constipated and brighter than he has been. REALLY likes the milk. He's eating more, and I'm very hopeful. BUT....just spoken to my mother-in-law who's just lost her ca...

Elderly cat behaviour before death
Hi, My beautiful Backy is very weak, really thin, can't walk without swaying. A number of times he's laid down and we've been prepared for the end.... But then he's got up and got some water (he's doing this VERY frequently), then returns and leaps to the spot he's decided to occupy. Just a few mome...

Re: Schesir alternative
Zooplus sell Schesir, at a reasonable price - it's all supplementary though Have you tried Gourmet Perle? It's lower in fat than most mainstream cat foods, so more easily digested by oldies I bought this due to a previous recommendation (probably from you :) ) and it was really good, but after the ...

Schesir alternative
Hi all, A trip to the vet diagnosed Backy, my 18 yr old, as problems caused by his diet. Blood tests came back normal. Old felines are notoriously picky, so I need something that is nutritious, but also tempting. The vet also has a picky aged mog, he has suggested schesir food, which I'm happy to ge...

Re: Suspected polyp - no surgery!!
Hi gingertigs, really sorry to hear about your moggy :( I have a feeling I know why your parents are reluctant. Our vets have told us that if we ever need to put our 18-yr-old under sedation that he might not wake up again because of his age. Your parents are probably considering that they may pay t...

Advice about vomiting cat
Back in early July my 19 year old moggy, Bacy, lost a lot of weight. We took him to the vets and after blood tests it turned out to NOT be a kidney problem - much to my vets surprise. She reasoned that he might have gum problems, so put him on Metacam. Fantastic - Backy started eating properly again...

Well put Mollycat. If you feel like you want to express your feelings, but are always holding back, try emailing the Samaritans. Before you go "but I'm not suicidal!!!!", that's NOT what they're about. They just listen, and goodness knows I've told them about things I'd never say to my fri...

Re: super skinny feline needs feeding up
Some never gain it again, just monitor to make sure they aren't losing. I'm surprised by the logic of putting him on metacam just in case it is his teeth. He's likely got some degree of arthritis at that age, I'd look at some supplements for that I'm suspicious he has arthritis too - he keeps rando...

Re: My cat licked inside the cement mixture
I'm not too knowledgeable myself, so I did a quick Google (though I dare say you have too). He may have gone some chemical burns :( Is he having trouble breathing? I'd really take him to the vets as it could develop into something more serious - the chemicals might do more damage as time goes on. If...

Thank you to everyone - sound feeding advice, and also you've really put my mind at rest because it never occurred to me that it would take a long time for him to regain weight due to his age.

Re: super skinny feline needs feeding up
Backy was variable with the Pate, but now that's what I put the Metacam on every morning, and so he guzzles the lot - turns out Backy has a sweet tooth and can't get enough of the honey taste (he also tries to lick unattended sticky toffee pudding).

Re: Peeing issues
I had the same problem with my 19 year old, Bakamono. We've had him since a kitten, suddenly at about 10 he started peeing on the bottom of the stairs. It was definitely him responding to neighbourhood male cats scenting the back door. Also, one kept breaking in (and I mean that, it shattered the fl...

super skinny feline needs feeding up
Backy is 19 and has lost a hod load of weight (you can feel his spine). We took him to the vet, who did some tests and was flabbergasted at the tip-top condition of his kidneys. So, the general thought was it was gum disease. He's now on metacam and, thank goodness, eating more enthusiastically. How...

Nature's Miracle is expensive but worked amazingly, much better than other stuff I've tried......also, amusingly, the Tesco delivery driver complemented me on my lovely perfume, which I wasn't wearing - it was the Nature's Miracle he could smell, lol.

Death advice - not happy reading
Hi all, This could be distressing, so please consider this before reading on. My cat, Twitch, passed away last night. Re: Take to the vets or not?
Hi rstuk1 & welcome. Has his drinking changed? Does his faeces/urine look significantly different? These could be good indicators as to whether it's physical or psychological. Is it possible he wants more attention and he can remember you responding to his previous behaviour got attention? If yo...

Re: Very worried- co-ordination
Many thanks to Ruth B and Lilith for the advice. Sadly Twitch's problems turned out not to be an ear infection, it was neurological. She went rapidly down hill over a few days and passed away last night. I'm pleased she went easily & peacefully, and we didn't need to take her to be euthanized (t...
