Re: Update on Alfie with colitis and heart issue.

Hi booktigger, yes a huge relief. I was surprised that steroids weren’t prescribed but the vet wanted to see if he improved at home with the stimulants. He’ll only start steroids if he doesn’t put on weight and appetite drops back again. I’ve not dealt with IBD before so I’m a bit nervous about what...

Update on Alfie with colitis and heart issue.

Alfie has been diagnosed with severe ibd by a specialist vet, not lymphoma as he expected it to be thank goodness. After 3 days of tests he was allowed home with some appetite stimulants but no steroids yet. These worked well for a few days and the diarrhoea stopped as he ate almost normally- never ...

Re: Colitis and heart issue.

He wouldn’t tolerate syringe feeding although it seems an obvious way to get food into him. I tried once yesterday by blending some of his food adding a pinch of protexin and water but he was having none of it. :(

Re: Colitis and heart issue.

I’ve got all the flavours of lickelix and Alfie will only eat a tiny bit of the salmon. He won’t touch the putty which PG now has his pill in. Yesterday I bought some pilchards to see if that would tempt him, warmed a little, but no. The nose was twitching but he wouldn’t try it, his brother polishe...

Re: Colitis and heart issue.

Thanks Lilith, I’ve just ordered some on amazon as pah don’t have it. I have to agree the vets on the whole are useless. About five years ago all the original good vets left and younger locums were brought in and a lot of money spent on converting the place into a 24hr practice to take emergencies t...

Re: Colitis and heart issue.

Hi, yes it is tricky. It’s been very distressing for both Alfie and us. I won’t be taking him back so the course (abs) won’t be finished. He actually managed to eat a little this morning including some crushed atenolol in lickelix mixed in so that was good to see. He is a stressy cat at the best of ...

Re: Colitis and heart issue.

Update: feeling very worried and frustrated. Alfie hasn’t really picked up much since I first posted. The vet suggested a course of vitamin b injections as his levels were low, which seemed to perk him up a little and his appetite improved a little but the diarrhoea continued. Giving pills (antibiot...

Re: Colitis and heart issue.

Thanks :) Having read the link Antonio sent it sounds promising, hope the smell doesn’t put Alfie off if it’s that strong. I’ll have to check if it interacts with his meds too. The vet seems very anti using any supplements ie probiotics, not sure why. So slippery elm would probably be a no no too. I...

Re: Colitis and heart issue.

Thanks for the links, very useful. Anyone else on the forum used slippery elm for their cats ibs? Alfie is very difficult to pill and gets stressed, not good for hcm.ive tried various ways/ tricks but this treat so far is the only one he will tolerate. It’s not great I know. Your cats name is cute b...

Re: Colitis and heart issue.

Thank you for your reply and sorry your cat is not well, one of my other cats has cholongitis and is on meds but is slowly getting better. With Alfie I’m wondering if it might be the treat he takes his crushed pill in. He’s impossible to pill in the normal way but will eat this, some on his food too...

Colitis and heart issue.

Alfie is a 10 year old bsh who is really worrying me at the moment. His weight has been dropping since the start of the year. In April I saw that he was pooping little blobs of clear ‘jelly’ in the litter tray and around the house. He would stop anywhere and strain. Then he stopped eating, so he wen...

Re: Cholangitis and gallstones.

Thanks booktigger, I’ve now stocked up with all flavours from pah, nature’s menu treat sticks and mackerel loin in the hope that at least one of these might work! The vet called earlier to say the liquid suspension version of the abs are £200 :o .so I said I’d persevere with the tablets..

Re: Cholangitis and gallstones.

I asked the vet about a liquid form of the pills and the antibiotics do come in drops and liquid, I wish I’d known that before. Apparently the metrobactin pills taste nasty so not sure if the liquid will go down any better :| Just wasted another four pills, tried crushing into tuna again, well mashe...

Re: Cholangitis and gallstones.

I can only find two flavours of lickelix now, salmon or chicken. I think the other flavours have gone. I looked at pillpockets but they seem to be for dogs only in the pet shops. I couldn’t believe he wouldn’t touch tuna, the other cats were going mad when I opened the tin. I’ve tried moulding a pie...

Re: Cholangitis and gallstones.

Thanks so much for your replies :) PG doesn’t like being wrapped up or restrained in any way, he is a very strong big cat who has a massive panic attack if you try! I even took him to the vet to pill yesterday morning and she had trouble too. I hadn’t thought of asking if there’s a liquid form, I’ll...

Re: Cholangitis and gallstones.

Update: PG had a repeat scan and blood test on Tuesday and the stone in his gallbladder is smaller and the other one has gone. His liver values are down to normal too so good news. He is brighter and livelier now with a better appetite, obviously feeling a lot better. One problem is that he has to t...

Re: Cholangitis and gallstones.

Thanks Kay, I only saw Royal Canin on Zooplus earlier until I googled it, then lots more came up :) I believe it’s unusual for cats to have gallstones, not sure why he developed them. He’s on destolit in the hope it will help to dissolve them.

I use Greenwood’s clumping litter and wash my seven litter trays out every 4-6 weeks. I wipe the trays round with pah antibacterial wipe in the meantime if needed.

I forgot to mention that he’s taking his meds in lick e lix as he’s impossible to pill otherwise. Hoping it’s not harmful for his condition. Also he’s around 5-6 years old. :)

Cholangitis and gallstones.

Our lovely big ginger boy PG has been in hospital for for three days after he stopped eating and had awful diarrhoea. After blood tests and a scan he was found to have two gallstones, one big one in the gall bladder and a smaller one in the biliary tree. His bilirubin was high and the alt (?) is sti...

Re: Ten year old cat pooing outside the litter tray.

Thanks for your replies. I don’t think it’s arthritis as he uses the tray to pee, when he’s not spraying. Although when he steps out to poo he doesn’t crouch, he sort of half stands and looks uncomfortable. Puppy pads sound a good idea. I’ll check his paw pads too just in case. Been using the same l...

Ten year old cat pooing outside the litter tray.

Beaker’s odd behaviour started a few months ago when he looked as if he was going to use the litter tray, digging around in it, but then he would get out and poo on the floor just outside of it. Then he tries to bury it by scratching the floor. Overnight he and his sister sleep in the kitchen so I d...

They're vile things, my son was bitten last year out running but didn't know til the bullseye rash appeared. Luckily after a course of abs he was all clear.

Re: Large tic- twister too small

I'm a bit worried now as the site of the tick bite is reddish and raised and feels rough. I've bathed it with salty water but am wondering if the vet should take a look tomorrow if it looks the same. I've not seen this reaction in my other cat who had a couple on his face a while ago.

Re: Large tic- twister too small

I did it! A pull and twist and the whole thing came out and tried to crawl away- ughhhh! I screwed it up in a tissue and threw it down the waste disposal! Now I'd better check all the cats thoroughly just in case. I forgot Stronghold doesn't do ticks unfortunately. Thanks for both of your replies :)

Re: Large tic- twister too small

Alfie's disappeared into the garden for now! I had a go at getting hold of it earlier but I was afraid of squeezing it and making it worse so I chickened out :(
I have some surgical spirit though and cotton wool. Would it be a bad idea to use it on a cat?
