Re: New cat litter issues ?Guarding

Is the bathroom really the only place one cat can be separated from the other? She sounds like a strong and confident personality, so confinement after having the run of the house might well be tough for her. Be warned that vets are often told in vet school that Torties account for 90% of their prob...

Re: New cat litter issues ?Guarding

I'm not the expert on introductions as all mine have happened organically when a cat decided to move in and the resident accepted the newcomer, except for Bobby who desperately needed a companion and I had to get Molly for him. So I've never been through it. But I don't think you can count it in tim...

Re: New cat litter issues ?Guarding

2 weeks is probably too soon to let them loose together. Go back a step in the introduction process. This isn't about litter trays it's about them not being ready to share everything and if you don't go back and proceed only when they are comfortable with each step, you could easily end up with prob...

Re: Eyes Glowing Different Colors

There isn't always something wrong, have any of you noticed that cats' blue eyes (colourpoint breeds and some white) reflect red? Different species reflect different colours too, which I knew from hanging out with a pest controller and is confirmed in this link. As you see in the first picture of th...

Re: 18yr old cat with Kidney Disease

The best renal foods in the world are no use at all if your cat won't eat them. As for dairy, I've had 3 renal failure cats, arguably I might be on my 4th now, and of all the bad things ever said about dairy I've never heard that it affects kidney health, only that it's liable to give them the squit...

Re: New timid cat yowls all night

It's one of those cat behaviours that nobody really knows why they do it, and there can be lots of different causes. Some are physical, like hyperthyroidism or pain. Sometimes it's confusion, disorientation or insecurity. Other times it's a call for attention, affection, playtime or something from y...

Re: Introducing new wet food

The Prokolin syringe does take a little getting used to but it's a good skill to master. If you think the cat size one is bad you should try as I did getting cat doses out of a dog size one, let's just say sense of humour and patience are required.

Re: New cat is too good at hiding

I have a cat that I have had for 7 years and believe me I have been through this with her. The best thing you can do to help a cat feel comfortable is leave her alone, let her come out and approach you in her own time. Just be calm and quiet at all times, move gently, talk to her, but let her be whe...

Re: hairballs attached to coat

Your cat needs some good care, urgently. He needs an effective worming treatment plan which should help with his weight, as basically worms are eating all his food so he isn't getting any nutrition. Those aren't hairballs, hairballs are something different that forms in the stomach, he probably has ...

Re: Cat regurgitating food/clear liquid

Bringing up clear or yellowish frothy liquid is usually either a hairball that won't come up, irritated stomach lining or inflammation in the pancreas, and also happens when the cat has not eaten for a day or so. Is there a reason why the vet suspected a kidney problem in a 2 year old cat? What you'...

I think so too. At 24 years old, would you really want to poke and prod her and starve her overnight and draw blood and sedate her and bundle her into the carrier to go for more tests, only to push pills down her throat how many times a day and change her food and stop her treats ... No, we give the...

I envy you in your retirement. Dog this morning early chose to come home after less than half an hour walking a few steps, a small throw of the ball and lie down for a rest, and start again. We normally walk for a couple of hours off the lead all over the estate and beyond. Someone locally spotted a...

Wow that's a lot to deal with! Seems a lot to put a cat through surgery with all the associated risks while already waiting for I131. Re: Cat scratching carpet only at night

Before you go paying for a behaviour expert, there's a lot more to try. If it's not a stress behaviour Feliway is unlikely to do anything. Is it always in the same spot, or the same kind of place like the edges? How do you react, does he get attention for doing it? Have you tried horizontal scratch ...

Re: Pushing Stuff off Shelves

What a lovely topic for a lazy Sunday morning! To be honest I've never had a shelf-pusher / gravity-tester but I did have one who was fascinated with anything slightly off the edge if she was under it. So from the floor anything sticking out over the edge of the table or a chair had to be attacked, ...

Re: Kidney Disease.cat

Is she refusing the renal food, or is her appetite poor generally? A food she will eat is better than no food so if it's just the renal or the RC renal she doesn't like then I would try other brands or ordinary low phosphorous senior food if none of the renal diets are acceptable. Poor appetite is c...

Re: Fast breathing in kitten

Has your kitten been tested for HCM? Do you know if his breeding lines are clear of it? Given that HCM is common in the breed I would have expected your vet to be looking at this before announcing that one of the main symptoms of it has nothing to do with another red flag pointer to test for the sam...

Cats also don't respond to punishment, I hope you're not doing that any more as it would most likely make behavioural issues worse not better. She is either distressed or protesting, and working with her to find out what it is will give you better results than any punishment. Ok so from your point o...

Yes please talk to your vet and don't reduce thyroid meds without a vet's advice. Uncontrolled hyperthyroidism causes irreversible problems like blindness and heart failure and dosage is critical.

I think that's it we don't really want to speculate and either reassure you falsely or panic you. Some endocrine issues can disrupt body system balance and interfere with temperature regulati...

Re: my cat has brown spot over eye / under ear

Thin hair is normal in this area in front of the ear, and brown stain marks are very common. Most of my cats have had these as they aged, Molly has a small one now. I've never known them to indicate any trouble but I don't know what they are.

Re: Best wet and dry food for Kittens

Out of the easily available and inexpensive UK brands I would go Felix Good as it looks. It has one of the highest protein contents and I find cats that leave chunks are more likely to eat the flakes in it. The moisture content is a bit lower in the kitten food though, below 80% so you can add a tea...

Re: scratching

Think cat! I would first invest in a single pole type scratch post and put it right in the way of him scratching the sofa, and get some scent on it that he likes. Catnip spray could work even if he doesn't go doolally on catnip, just as an attractant. Once he gets used to the feel of sisal poles he ...
