Re: In from the cold?

Susand that all depends, a light box I could bring in up two flights of stairs daily, but anything bigger or more solid (and weatherproof) would have to stay downstairs where the housing association is even more likely to dump it. Ruth that could certainly identify the pee culprit couldn't it, and t...

Re: New cat hissing and growling at me

Sounds to me like poor Coco has had a rough time and learned that the only way to be given some space is to be aggressive. She is clearly deeply unhappy, who knows perhaps ill or in pain, and has not been loved and respected for the special little soul she is. It seems to me maybe she would have bee...

Re: In from the cold?

An outdoor shelter would be ideal, but being housing association flats it could easily be carted away, and the form of shelter would have to be considered as carefully as its location so as not to trap him conveniently for some nasty dog - I am a bit paranoid about this now having rescued my neighbo...

Re: How many sofas have your cats ruined?

It's more than normal behaviour, it's a physical need just the same as washing or eating. It's keeping claws and all associated tendons ligaments and muscles in top condition. It's stripping off the old dead layer of claw to reveal the razor sharp new layer underneath and keeping the retracting mech...

In from the cold?

It's that time of year again when the mornings feel decidedly nippy and the nights start to draw in. Our neighbour's cat who has been more than happy sleeping under a car or in a corner of the bin area has once again like last year started to get more cuddly and more demanding, and more like LET ME ...

Re: New kitten or kittens with existing nervous cat

Tricky! I adopted an 8 year old retired stud cat and he desperately needed a friend, so I found my 6 year old moggy girl. He was very gentle, she was extremely shy, sounds like yours. 3 years ago we lost Boo, when Molly was 12. We also have a dog, which Molly is ok with but not friendly with. We tal...

Re: Urgent rehoming advice needed

What a difficult situation for you. There is no guarantee that your second child will have the same allergies as the first, is it really not possible to get through the next 6 weeks until you move? Other than dust, I'm not sure what health hazard cat litter presents, at least not until they start to...

Re: Scottish Wildcat

Maybe there is some SWC in the mix with a bit of feral moggy, but that is not a SWC - for a start SWC has at least 75% unbroken stripes and I know the pics are a bit blurry but I don't see a single unbroken stripe there. Are you certain he's a he? Again could be picture quality but there looks to be...

Re: Metacam - First time user

Little monkey! I found one detail in here https://nap.nationalacademies.org/resource/10668/cat_nutrition_final.pdf - excess magnesium causing urinary tract stone formation in presence of high pH. Now, cat urine is meant to be quite acidic to prevent crystal formation and that's why drinking too much...

Poor little poppet!
I was reading up about something completely unrelated, namely mineral deficits, and stumbled on a single line about crystals. My mission now is going to be tracking it down again!

Re: Visiting dogs and resident cats

I just wouldn't let them meet, if it's not going to be a regular thing. Put dogs in one room and cats in another, preferably with an airlock in between, ie TWO securely closed doors. Is there a reason why you need to take care of these dogs occasionally, or is there somewhere more suitable they coul...

Re: Metacam - First time user

I did wonder about being sterile and I suppose that will depend on what we're looking for - it certainly won't affect the protein my vet is looking for, I can't imagine it would affect crystals, but looking for bacteria could be an issue. Anyway I have ordered 6 bags for a couple of quid each so eve...

Re: Metacam - First time user

Just had a little dig around - you can buy the Katkor crystals if anyone feels like me that we might have more luck with more in the tray.

Next question, does anyone know if these can be rinsed and re-used?

Re: Metacam - First time user

I always think there just isn't enough in their silly little bags. Molly likes about 8 litres of grit in her trays so that poxy little bag makes her hold on till she's fit to burst. Now I use another tray that sort of fits inside the regular one so the smell of normal litter is still there. She can ...

This is how a sofa should look. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
Genius, love it!

Ikea does a range of furniture with cat things incorporated. Incredibly ugly, but the thought's there I suppose.

Re: How many sofas have your cats ruined?

You need to "think cat" and offer a much more attractive alternative. A cat needs to strop to keep their claws in trim, so barring a cat from scratching furniture is only going to displace the behaviour onto something else. The best possible thing is scratching posts, placed where the cat ...

Tricky situation. If it's not a permanent structure? Made of chicken wire? The way I see it if you are allowed to have a cat there ought to be better backup for you. Cats and for that matter foxes can come from anywhere to poop in the flowerbeds and the management ought to either remind the moaners ...

Thirst could be either but restlessness (and night-time yowling) is classic hyperthyroid - rather than renal issues.

See what the vet says.

Ok, glad you have ruled out gut lymphoma, as it is hard to tell the difference between that and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD is not the same as IBS in humans) although the treatment of choice is the same steroids. Is she just vomiting, or does she get diarrhoea as well? Inflammatory bowel affects...

Molly's Next Big Step

I really share these little stories as reassurance and encouragement for anyone else with a Very Shy or Traumatised Cat. Nine and a half years after I adopted her aged 6, Molly is now letting me give her a light comb with the big detangler comb. A few months ago she began to tolerate being touched w...

Well 1.5 is definitely in the normal range, but I don't think so, I think you have to type it all up. I mean, that's not borderline, it's square in the normal.

Does the vet have any other ideas?
