Re: CKD numbers

Well, that was kind of my vets logic last year, if she can gain that much weight, her kidneys aren't too bad (and probably didn't relish taking blood from her when I wasn't allowed in the room!), I will be insisting this year though, she does drink straight after eating and has been sick a few times...

Re: CKD numbers

Well, we haven't tried for a while, one of the main struggles is that it is a bit time sensitive for me, as I have limited time to get it to the vets around working, and Lucy goes out - while she doesn't normally go outside, I suspect she might given the alternative. My last cat Buster, was easy, he...

Even better - we had hoped that as Lucy fights bloods so much that we could have used urine samples to monitor her, but she doesn't oblige with those either!

Re: Help! Can fit change this much? Could these cat be the same cat?

Sadly I would say not, the nose is different, and the black marking that seems to wrap round one of the legs is only on Cat B. There may be other differences, but hard to say with the different angles

Re: Chronic Kidney Disease food help

I'd be wary of Whiskas unless she is overweight, I used the old 7+ for my last cat and we panicked when he lost a lot of weight, turned out it was Whiskas. I wouldn't rule out dry food just because she has hardly any teeth, I've had cats with no teeth managing to eat dry food with no problems. It mi...

Re: Heat lamps for older kitties?

Lucy is also fussy with surfaces, I bought a lovely rug about 6 months after I adopted Lucy, she doesn't like standing on it, yet there is a cat cube and tunnel on it, she will sleep in them on the rug, but not on the rug, it's even hard enticing her to step on it while playing, she sometimes stops ...

Re: Heat lamps for older kitties?

I've never heard of heated lamps, but have had heated beds for a few of my oldies, you can get self heating ones too, that create heat with the weight of the cat, but they tend to be quite crinkly, so off putting for some cats which wouldn't use any electricity

Re: CKD numbers

I can see her logic, and it is nice to have a vet who won't run up an unnecessary bill! I ended up having to throw a box of renal wet away as it was out of date

Re: CKD numbers

I would be tempted to do a similar diet to Lucy's, keep wet what she will eat and just keep with the renal dry - I am going to insist on bloods for her next month, but she is 5 years after diagnosis and while she does drink immediately after eating, and she is sometimes mouth chews (although I suspe...

Re: CKD numbers

The range change might be that they have a different machine, or one was done in house and one sent to a lab. I wouldn't have thought that would have gone up enough to warrant a decision to put on renal food, especially as the marker had also gone up. I know what affects urea, but not to what extent...

My (rather limited) experience of vets shaving cats is they are very functional about it and the cats can come home looking rather interesting.

Re: Grief and Guilt- I missed signs of his cancer

I'm sorry to hear of your loss, but if he had cancer of the bone marrow, picking it up sooner likely wouldn't have changed the outcome, and instead, he got to spend more time being a cat rather then being put through tests that probably wouldn't have made much difference. RIP little one

Re: What is it with renal food?

Yep, I've never had a cat go off renal dry food, but renal wet food is a different matter entirely. Lucy has none now, I got fed up of throwing it in the bin and felt she must be miserable missing meals, hopefully we'll get bloods done this year and see what impact it has had.

Re: Need advice on fear of cats

It might be good for you to visit some local rescues - ring first and explain a bit of the situation, some have areas where you can sit and spend time with the cats, and if the staff just let you meet friendly, confident cats, it might help show your sister the nice side of cats and help with her fe...

Re: Fear aggressive foster cat

I'm really surprised the shelter didn't think things through and just do his shots a week early to save that trauma. It is tricky if they need medication, how bad are his eyes? I wouldn't say you aren't the right fit for this, you are doing everything right, and 4 weeks is nothing for timid cats and...

Re: Spaska got spayed today at 6.5 months, hope it goes well

I'm never sure of the difference between calico and tortie, but I'd say all 3 of your girls are dilute. Cat's aren't very good at listening to instructions, the first foster cat I had spayed, the first thing she did was jump on the 6ish foot wardrobe, never caused her any issues.

Re: Molly's New Challenge

Hi Vivian, I have indeed had 'the girls' for 4 years now. Still can't touch them, but they do interact in their own way, and I think a combination of lockdown and me working from home have helped a lot, they are getting brave in little ways, like when it's their night out, if Coco is on the sofa und...

Re: Molly's New Challenge

Seeing as you mention tiny 'pompoms', there is a chance he has an undescended testicle, I did take in a stray once that the initial vet thought was neutered, but I knew from his first wee he wasn't, and when I took him to a second vet, turned out he had an undescended testicle. It can take up to 6 w...

Daft question, but are you sure he has been done, as neutered tom cat wee doesn't have the same smell. The other thing that can affect wee smell is UTI's which can also make them avoid the tray.

Re: New fosterer - feral kittens.

The reason I asked about age of neutering is that if they neuter 4 months or earlier, it might be best to let him/her be shaved when they go for neutering, so you aren't associated with that, as it could be quite painful. Moving them again on the 16th might not be a wise idea, even confident cats/ki...

Re: New fosterer - feral kittens.

It's hard to say whether they can be brought round or not, I've had some at that age that have and some that haven't - what I have found though, is the more kittens, the harder it is to socialise, I had one litter of 3 kittens that had been brought in as 6 week old kittens, 2 were homed, and then th...

I completely agree with Mollycat, you don't know how much that bond is helping, and what he would be like without his sister. It's why I have mum and daughter, daughter may well have come round better without her mums fear, but doubt mum would be as confident in a house without her daughter, and aft...

Re: Breast cancer starting to ulcerate

I'm glad the x-ray seems like it hasn't spread to her lungs, but I still wouldn't put her through removal even for palliative, putting aside the fact that only removing the mass rather than the whole strip isn't the best idea given it has recently spread, it is very tough surgery to recover from, my...

Re: Breast cancer starting to ulcerate

I'm sorry to hear that her cancer is progressing, but I wouldn't put her through surgery, especially now you say she has a lump on the other side - when they remove mammary cancer, they tend to remove the whole strip of nipples, as it tends to just affect one side, but if she has lumps on both sides...
