The main thing is to keep her warm, if Bean leaves the nest - hope all is well this morning.

Re: Advice for adopting shelter cat
Well, if you are going to ignore her you will have to stick to it - otherwise you are teaching her that in order to get your attention she has to really persevere! If you are finding that difficult I would try rationing attention when you are busy - a few moments of conversation, a quick rub, then a...

Re: Swollen anus drags bottom what's wrong?
Impacted or infected anal glands? Anal fissure? Constipation? It could be so many things - I would get her to the vet ASAP. If you have only just got her a general check up and vaccination advice are a good idea in any case.

Re: Advice for adopting shelter cat
I gave up closing internal doors soon after I got a cat - or rather two cats. It is just about possible to cope with the in/out demands of one, but with two there is always one on the wrong side of a door...

Re: Would taking this kitten in pose a risk to my cats?
If you do take it in, I would certainly plan on isolating the kitten, preferably somewhere my cats do not go. As Lilith says, there are diseases that cannot be vaccinated against, plus parasites and other nasties - several weeks of quarantine would be needed for peace of mind.

Re: Elderly cat does not eat
I think if she were mine I would start the steroids at once. The less she eats the weaker she will become, and the less inclined to eat properly. Getting her to eat rather more before she gives up altogether may give her more energy, and get her back to enjoying eating once again.

Re: Elderly cat does not eat
I would try a high protein, high calorie, very tasty food - perhaps chicken, liver, and butter pureed together - something very easy to eat that does not require chewing. If you can find a texture she likes it may then be possible to find a commercial complete food that is similar. Chicken liver pat...

Re: Do you follow vet recommendations
I vaccinated the cats regularly when they were young, and treated for fleas etc routinely when we were backwards and forwards to my parents' house. Once I no longer needed to board the cats I have let vaccinations lapse, partly because I think they have lifelong immunity by now, and partly because w...

Re: Weeing on my bed
I suspect she is upset by the dog invading her space - she could be marking the highest object in the room, or feel unsafe about getting down on the floor. I would certainly find something waterproof to put over the bed, with an easily washable fleece blanket on top for her. Try washing the bed line...

Re: Transitioning indoor/outdoor cat to indoor
Would it be possible to time share to some extent - agree times that you will try to keep your cat in, and other times she will keep hers in another part of her home? Offer to contribute to blinds that she can pull down to hide your cat's visits? And start the process of getting the two cats more ac...

Re: 5 week old Kitten
I do see what you mean. Consistently different sized pupils is called anisocoria, and it can be minor or a symptom of more serious conditions like feline leukaemia. I would talk to your vet about how much it is a cause for concern in a very young kitten, and whether he may grow out of it or need fur...

Keep up the gentle encouragement and rewarding - the more you can reinforce that it is a Good Thing to have the other cat around the sooner the idea that her presence is ...

Re: Fear-induced aggression? - cat hissing at her sibling.
I think you are on the right track, but I would take it more slowly. Plan to bring them back together over a month, that way you are less likely to be disappointed and may be pleasantly surprised. I would feed them further apart, and avoid any situations where she might practice the fearful behaviou...

Re: Advice for adopting shelter cat
It sounds as if she is settling in fast! If you are finding the constant demands for attention wearing set some boundaries now. Give her 5 minutes attention, then pat her gently to indicate "That's your lot!" and put her down on the floor. I once took on a cat who had been hand reared, and...

Re: Best way to give your cat a tablet?
Yes, I am amazed at how easy both Pippin and Tilly are, compared to Shouna, the Siamese pill refuser! I did work on it when they were young, popping good things into their mouths until they accepted me holding their mouths - once bitten, twice prepared to take early action with kittens. The little p...

Re: Best way to give your cat a tablet?
I had a cat once who was nigh on impossible to pill - the only method that worked was wrapping her very thoroughly in a thick towel or dressing gown and not letting go until the tablet had been gone for at least 30 seconds. The trick was using something thick and wrapping really well, with her front...

Re: Newly diagnosed 12 year old Male cat with hyperthyroidism
As you will see from Pippin's thread, I opted for the radio-iodine treatment. I have been very happy with the results, although there were a couple of weeks when I wondered if I had done the right thing - Pippin suffers from arthritis, and got very wobbly through confinement and lack of exercise. On...

Re: Beware of theese cat collars!
From what I have read most cat flea collars contain permethrin, but at a level that is only harmful if it is added to other exposure. It still seems an unnecessary risk, though.

Re: 3 Week Old Kitten Help Please
I think with such a young kitten I would see a vet immediately. Blood in urine can be a medical emergency, especially in males - are you sure she is a "she"? Young kittens can be quite hard to sex correctly unless you are very familiar with them. Either way her best chance is to see a vet ...

Re: Normal or Coincident
Tilly-cat learns by observation. When the dogs were young I taught them to sit and politely take turns for treats. A few days in Tilly, who had been watching carefully, joined the row, sitting neatly - if that was all it took to get something delicious she was not going to miss out!

Sophy my papillon had a full dental yesterday, too - somewhat to the vet's surprise all the teeth were healthy under the layer of tartar, which he puts down to my zealous brushing keeping her gums in good order, and the pre-anaesthetic blood tests were all good. A general anaesthetic is always a wor...

Re: Tilly's kidneys - so far so good
Blood tests are now in. SDMA has dropped from 15 to 13 which is good news. Creatinine, urea and phosphorus were all slightly up, but not to the extent my vet considers them worrying. Glucose levels indicated stress rather than diabetes, which is also good. So the advice is to continue with a low pho...

I think the urine test is a bit of belt and braces - additional information over and above the bloods, especially to rule out diabetes.

Tilly's kidneys - so far so good
Tilly had the second round of tests for suspected kidney disease today - this time I managed to get a urine sample. Her weight is up very slightly, her general condition good, but the urine SG was a bit low at 1.025, with normal glucose levels. Blood test results should be back in a few days, but so...

Re: Kitten spraying
Definitely spay if not already done, but I have had this with spayed females and neutered males when they have felt threatened by an intruder and were marking their territory - even a cat seen through the window can be enough to start it, and once started they will keep remarking the scented spots -...

Re: Abscess help - could kitty be causing it?
I think it is highly probable. I would second keeping him out of your bedroom at night, and keeping your legs covered in stout trousers when you are around him. Having antiseptic wipes to hand and cleaning any little scratches during the day may help. I would also teach him to permit claw clipping -...
