Re: Dantrolene

Hello Didi Our cat, Blackie, was prescribed Dantrolene tablets after his 2nd bout of cystitis (caused by stress, not stones/crystals) back in June 2014. I can't remember that the tablets had any adverse effect on him. The only thing I recall is that as Blackie is nigh on impossible to pill, I called...

Re: CKD Stage 2

Only just seen this thread ... caught my eye because our Blackie has early stage CKD and fully understand the shock and upset at being told a beloved cat has this disease for which there is no cure. Renal food was rejected by our Dark Lord though like Murray he seemed to love the liquid it comes in....

Re: Cat foood!

I sometimes have this 'food discussion' with our vet but her answer is always the same. There is nothing wrong with Felix AGAIL DD as long as the phosphate binder is added and she thinks my efforts to get Blackie to eat what looks like a higher grade food are a waste of time and money. The vet's opi...

Re: Is it the end of the journey

So very sad for you. 20 is a grand age to reach for any cat and I hope, when the grief subsides, it will help to realise that you must have cared and looked after Tat extremely well for her to reach that age. Thinking of you.

Re: Some good news ...

Even more good news .... just spoken to the vet for the urine results (won't go into the hilarity of trying to get the sample). My dread is hearing her say that his UPC ratio has gone up. Very happy to hear her tell me that its still within the normal range and so were the results of his SDMA test. ...

Re: Casper's bloodwork came back and I don't know what to think

When I see our vet this coming week, I will ask her more about Blackie's urea level and how much stress can affect the result, as I have read on a reputable site that it does. Though it has to be said our cat seems to live on his nerves - and a vet visit must send his blood pressure through the roof...

Re: Casper's bloodwork came back and I don't know what to think

I don't know if this will help. But when the vet phoned me last week with Blackie's latest blood results, she told me that his urea was high at 13. However, as Blackie gets so stressed out when he goes to the vets, her view was that the result may be a false one as stress will affect the result - an...

Re: Some good news ...

Thanks to all for the good wishes. The vet also told me she did a SDMA test but I must have blanked out by the time she mentioned it because for the life of me I can't remember what she said. I will be calling in to the clinic soon to ask her opinion about a few things (unrelated to CKD), so will as...

Some good news ...

I know there are many folk on here who are facing much sadness and/or worry over their beloved cats - and I feel really fortunate to have received good news from our vet. My stress levels go through the roof waiting for the results wondering whether his CKD has slipped into Stage 2. Having taken a d...

The more time goes by, the more angry I'm getting to be honest. Blackie is not, at the moment, the same cat that he was before we took him in yesterday. I'm thinking of cancelling next week's appt to give him more time to get over what was a very upsetting and stressful experience for him (let alone...

Blackie 1 ... Vet 0 ....

Blackie won the first round at the vets this morning. When I saw that the nurse was a young trainee, I knew there'd be real trouble. No sooner had the towel been wrapped round Blackie, then he was  followed by a fight to keep him inside the towel with plenty of growling, hissing, spitting, scr...

Re: How to know when it's time?

I'm in bits reading the first post because everything written about Trixie brought back memories of the cat I grew up with. I never knew the house without Willie and to see him in his last weeks can still bring tears to my eyes 40+ years later. He too was diagnosed with CKD end stage but my mother w...

Yes meriad - the very same. Neighbour told us that they let Poppy outdoors when she was 6 months old, by which time I assume she was spayed. I suspect if Blackie's stress problem is other-cat related, it is down to males roaming around. Blackie doesn't and as far as I know never has got on with othe...

Re: Its true ... Blackie has a girlfriend!

Little Poppy is only about a year old ... so my old rascal of 13+half is cradle snatching  Can't swear to this and it may just be a coincidence but since he's become more friendly with Poppy, the belly licking seems to have reduced a bit. I've stopped putting the steroid spray on it - doesn't s...

Its true ... Blackie has a girlfriend!

Contrary to what I first thought about a young tabby cat coming into our garden and upsetting Blackie, we've now found out from the neighbour next door but one that Blackie often comes into their garden and happily sits near (or even next to) their female cat, Poppy. He told us he hadn't seen Blacki...

Re: Does anyone use Metacam for their cat?

Hi Harry ... not sure I can help that much ... but we were within 24/48 hours of losing our cat (male) 2+half years ago to stress related cystitis so I have enormous empathy for anyone who has a cat suffering from this problem. Fortunately for us, my late mother brought him up on wet food (Felix) bu...

Re: Molly pulling her fur out

I sympathise - we've been struggling with this problem for months now with our cat (Blackie). He has taken off his belly fur and bits a bit further up underneat as well as at the top of his left hind leg. Knowing his nature and character as well as the vet does, she believes the fur mowing is stress...

Totally agree with Helen about adding lots of water to food. But no vet has ever recommended I give Blackie anything other than wet food pouches. Fortunately my mother had always fed him on Felix wet pouches anyway. We were originally given Hills c/d wet urinary stress food after his first bout of s...

Don't be fooled by your cat looking nonchalant, cats hide a myriad of emotions. Blackie's belly licking/scratching ..

This isn't a life threatening problem, I know but Blackie's fur mowing and scratching has been going on now for 3 months and while I've seen much worse cases on the internet, the treatment the vet gave (Cortavance spray) just doesn't seem to be working or stopping him. I've now discovered that he's ...

Re: Potential conflict with vet

Hi Kris The vet suggested in view of his age (12 at the time - he's now 13), he should have a full blood count test which was sent to an outside laboratory. I think the price was about £80. When the results came back a few days later, he phoned to tell me Blackie's urea level was above the normal li...
