Re: fussy eater
My beloved Blake loved Iams, but I'm 'taking on board' your comments (dontcha just hate that expression!) and will try a different dry food. Rufus absolutely has me wrapped round his tufty paw. I'm such a soft touch, and he knows it. I worry about him starving when he turns his nose up at his less f...

Re: Men About the House (when workmen and cats coincide...)
Thank you for moving my post, Jane. Love the sign in your kitchen, Lilith, and will remember it. I've sometimes wished I'd married a physiotherapist or a masseur or something, but to be honest, I'd rather put up with the pain. :) Apart from my son of course, the only males welcome in my house would ...

Re: Moving to a flat, how will the cat cope?
I think your cat will get used to a litter tray. When my Blake got ill with CKD I had to get a urine sample so I got those non-absorbent granules and bought a tray . He hadn't used a litter tray in 17 years but he 'went' within an hour. As other people have said, it's amazing how adaptable cats are....

Re: Killer Cat
When I lived in Wisley Gardens in Surrey I had a black cat called Charlie. He grew up there, with 220 acres to roam free in. He became a terrific hunter. He once caught a MOLE - have any of you heard of a cat managing that? - and used to bring in baby squirrels and leverets and leave them beside my ...

Having just written how problem-free my life with Rufus is (my post ended up under 'Just got cat' instead of under 'Man about the House' where I meant it to go - sorry!) there is something that is beginning to annoy me a bit. I feed Rufus on demand - he always has dry food available, and none of yer...

Lilith you're a woman after my own heart in many ways, and Bobby's girl, I empathise. I've suffered from chronic severe back pain since I was pregnant with my son, and he's now 30. I've had operations, tried every complementary/alternative therapy going, concluded they work exclusively on the placeb...

Re: Hi everyone! I introduce you my new kitten
Aaawwww...so cute. He reminds me of my late beloved Blake who I first saw when he was 10 days old. He was also very stripey, and already trying to move around by 'rowing' with his little legs - he couldn't stand up yet. He was the first in his litter to open his eyes. I got him at 8 weeks, and like ...

Re: holidays
Thanks Lilith - my son lived in Wakefield after he graduated from Leeds University, then in Clecky for a couple of years. I go up to see him at least once a year and we've been camping in the Yorkshire Dales many times. I can understand why he'll never come back to Suffolk. He even has a Yorkshire a...

Re: CKD & hyperthyroidism
I agree with Crewella: well done getting Tat to such a ripe old age. My Blake had CKD in the last months of his life (he lived to be 18) and towards the end became very dehydrated. I made sure there were bowls of fresh water in every part of the house, especially as he wasn't as mobile as he used to...

So I'm off on my hols in a couple of days. First I'm going to see my son who lives in Rastrick in West Yorkshire - possibly near you, Lilith - and then we're going camping in Snowdonia for 3 or 4 nights. Or one night if we get very wet ( I don't mind rain but if your stuff gets wet it's a misery). M...

Re: giving meds, part 2
Yeah, I regard it as evidence of great intelligence. And deviousness. I love the idea of a forum where cats learn how to reject meds. Or maybe the Kitten Academy can run a course on the subject - the one that features in a series of ads for a certain cat food, that I get when I use you Tube, quite c...

giving meds, part 2
A week or so ago I started a thread about giving meds. I related how I'd forced a pill down Rufus Tuftypaws's throat and how guilty he made me feel. I felt ever so slightly smug that I'd managed it so neatly, though. Well, today I was tidying my living room, plumping up the sofa cushions and what di...

Re: adopting an older cat
Craneflies, leatherjackets, slugs... yikes! Once lived in an old cottage with a cat who'd catch and eat the spiders in the bath, crunch crunch, with the legs sticking out of the side of his mouth... not so nice either! Maybe we ought to abandon this thread now before one of us barfs?!

Didn't want to post this under 'health and behaviour'.
When Blake got very old and rather unwell there were times I couldn't find him anywhere in the house during the night. Where DO they manage to hide???

Re: Teach an old cat new (toilet) tricks?
When I adopted Rufus Tuftypaws he was 4 and a half. He had no cat flap and had been using a litter box indoors. So I provided him with a littler box, had him micro-chipped and replaced my old cat flap with a n electronic one (so that all the neighbouring cats can't come in). During the winter he use...

Mrs Kane, maybe your granny saw a kindred spirit in Fritz, being 'so angry and mean'! Still, I find it rather touching that she stuck with him especially for such a reason.

Thanks for your stories :D but Lilith, snakes???... I have such a snake phobia that if I see a picture of a snake I can't even touch the paper it's printed on. If a 5 inch snake even LOOKES at me I think I'd have a heart attack! Mice now I don't mind. My best friend once spent three hours stood on a...

adopting an older cat
I was devastated when my adored Blake had to be pts in May 2014. He was 18 and had chronic kidney disease. My son went to uni, so it had been just Blake and me for ten years. I decided to adopt or foster an older cat when the time was right. In September 2015 Rufus Tuftypaws came into my life. His e...

Re: Excessive licking/grooming
I had a little tortie who licked herself bare in spots, and then the skin would become red and raw. The vet put her on hormone replacement therapy  (didn't know that existed for cats) but the problem really only solved itself when I moved away. At the original flat we lived in we had two un- ...

Re: giving meds
Thank you for your stories! :D As for the Terry Pratchett book,it was published in 1989, and it's illustrated by Gray Jolliffe whose cats always have big noses for some reason , but he captures their attitudes excellently and humorously. I think the book has been rather overshadowed by the Discworld...

Re: Strange new night behaviors
I'm sorry if I sounded critical of people who keep their cats in at night - I know it's done for the best possible reasons, not least safety. I should have added that I am lucky enough to live in a close, no passing traffic at all. If I lived on a busy road it would very likely be a different story!...

I've always had a cat flap wherever I've lived, and I've allowed my cats to come and go a his/her nature dictated - after all, who am I to impose my human habits on an animal that is, what's the word I'm looking for, not nocturnal, but crepuscular??? I just got my next-door neighbour to hold Rufus Tuftypaws firmly while I forced his mouth open, shoved a Comfortis pill down his throat, closed his mouth and gently stroked his throat until he swallowed, and now he won't look at me and won't eat the treat he usually gobbles up, and I feel like a ba-...

Rufus Tuftypaws had just a few flea bites but turned out to be allergic, developing small scabs. He had one dose of Comfortis and four days later the problem had vanished.
