Carmarthen - Black & White cat

I'm not really a cat person. Recently this cat has started sitting at our back door mewing. It tries to get into the house. Sits on outside window sills. Follows us around the garden. Generally seems to think that it is ours and it lives here.

It doesn't. It's not ours. We do not want it to be ours. It is a nice thing, quite healthy looking etc. All the advice I've read involves quite some effort by us, do this, and then do that etc. Just look at the advice pages here. I called a local cat home and they asked me to take it to a vet for gender and age to be assessed. No. I don't have time for that, don't have a cat carrier etc etc. I have asked local neighbours, not theirs.

I really don't want to just be nasty to it and hope it goes away, but it may just get to that. It is now coming on for two weeks.

Any easy solutions out there ?

So, no magic wands or words with a solution.

It's still there. Even at this time of night it's sitting outside. My Mrs and I have discussed this. If we let it in even once, give it comfort, food, and show some affection, then that's it. It becomes our cat, actually no we become it's providers. We do not want this. We go away a lot. We do not want the responsibility. We are now at the stage where we are forcing ourselves to ignore it.

Incidentally, there are no other animals around other than a goldfish. If this cat was me, I'd give up and go somewhere else.

If the cat is really friendly, which it seems it is, could you get it to a vets to be scanned for a microchip.
Vets will do this free of charge, and if chipped the cat can be returned to its owner.
Good luck

I've just picked up on this thread. I do sympathise, I used to be just like you - a dog person. I admired cats, but didn't want one. Especially as a gardener with all the neighbours cats using my veg patch as a litter tray! Then I found a tiny kitten who would have died but for my intervention - now we have a house full and I can't imagine life without them.

This does not solve your problem. You say the cat has 'recently' started coming to you. Do you have any new neighbours? Might the cat be theirs?

if you have never fed it or offered it any kind of shelter, there must be a reason why this cat sits outside your house, and only your house - the only obvious answers to that I can see is that your house closely resembles its own house, or you are the only house around, or most likely, it has been dumped around your house and is too bewildered to leave

I assume it can get out of your garden easily - does it do so? and then return? is it getting thinner and looking more bedraggled?

if you really don't want to interact with the cat, could you take a photo and make up a leaflet to post around your neighbourhood - if you can eliminate the likelihood of its having an owner you can try to get a rescue to take it

whereabouts in Carmarthen are you? I only live 12 miles away and may be able to suggest someone but only if there is no owner missing a much loved cat

OK, so no solutions without me having to actually do something.

First, a picture outside the house asking if it belongs to anyone. Can't do that today, maybe tomorrow.

Carmarthen, very near Town Centre. Large garden and it can come and go very easilly.

This is it trying to sneak into the house. I need to be clear I'm not anti-cat, otherwise I'd just give it a kick or something. I just don't want it as my own.

to be honest, I think it would be best if you totally ignore the cat in the hope it finds someone more prepared to look out for it

sticking a found notice up in your window won't be much use if the cat has owners who never pass your house on foot, and if there are no owners to be found you are I suspect not up for trapping it and getting it to a rescue

having said that, I also suspect your don't care attitude is a bit of a front, and that a part of you would like to help this cat - I have a cat which I feed regularly outside my enclosed patio, and which has a cheap dog kennel for shelter if it wants it, and it really isn't a bother to me, and costs me around £3 a week

The temptation is to take it in. But, it's not our cat.

Mrs and I discussed. Sign outside on the street and nearby neighbours letterboxes

Monday. Local vet to check for microchip, maybe lost/found noticeboard if there is one

Then, cat rescue

We are not going to encourage it with food/shelter. Hard, but the only way for us. I'm amazed that it is still hanging around after the lack of attention from us. We simply do not want a pet right now. We go away a lot.

I was right - you are willing to do more than just post on here :)

have to say though that I think you're wrong not to feed - if the cat didn't eat a day's worth of the the cheapest cat food on the market you could be fairly sure it had somewhere else where better food was on offer, and sending it on its way would be an easier option, and it would probably be wrong to take it to a rescue (assuming no chip, which is always the likely outcome even with a treasured cat)

Ok. So time passes, cat is still at our back door and in the garden

Got it into a box today and took it to a vet.

No chip. Male. Approx 2 years old. Neutered, so not completely feral. Paper collar for a few days has got no results.

Next step for me, cat rescue home. But, I think the Mrs has other ideas . . . . . .
