Indoor kitten wanted as companion

Hello

I have a deaf rescue tabby who is around a year old. He's an absolute sweetie and is very active. He has to be kept indoors because of his deafness but I do take him outside with a harness. I work from home so I am with him most of the time but when he was in a cattery before I adopted him he got along with the other cats and I really think he would benefit from a friend. Because of his deafness and level of activity I thought a kitten or very young cat would be ideal as a friend for him. I am concerned that an older will struggle to communicate with him and he also needs an active friend to play with.

I have tried numerous rescue centres but nobody will rehome a kitten to an indoor home, even if I will take it outside for walks. I find it upsetting and quite crazy. I understand that statistically indoor cats live longer because they are not subject to the many dangers they can encounter outside. I know in many countries it is quite normal to keep your cat inside and they are still happy and healthy. I have even heard of vets abroad advising people to keep their cats inside because it's so much safer.

If anyone can help with finding a young friend for my baby boy, I would be very grateful. I have a fairly large 2 bed flat and I don't feel my cat wants for anything. I basically have a large cat crèche and my life revolves around Crispin. I can offer a great home to a younger cat, even without a garden.

Thanks!

How lovely that you're planning to adopt a playmate for Crispin! :) Where are you based? There are a few rescues that will home specific cats (for example, nervous or deaf cats) to indoor homes.

If it were me, I'd get an adult cat roughly the same age as Crispin that prefers living indoors or has to live indoors due to a medical condition and is happy with that. The problem with getting a kitten is that you might end up with one that really, really wants to go outside which would be very stressful for all of you. Also, if a cat has always been indoor and is happy with that, I wouldn't walk it on a lead because once it's had a taste of the great outdoors it might want to be outside all the time. Just my opinion.

Hi there
I'm the fostering coordinator with Blue Cross in Cumbria.
We have a 6mth old male kitten who needs to be an indoor cat due to some loss of sight - he has healed ulcers on both eyes as a result of untreated cat flu.

He is a perfectly normal kitten in all respects and loves other cats. He currently lives with my own cats and plays with two of the boys all the time.
