Hi all,

We are hoping to buy or rescue an adult Maine Coon. We will be first time cat owners but long time animal lovers.

We absolutely love Maine coons and all of their positive personality traits and simply how stunning they are!

We are really keen on adopting an adult female (aged 2-4), Male if available but I realise that's less likely.

We are based in London and own a 3 bed house with a small enclosed garden.

We do work full time but spend lots of time at home and would provide lots of love and affection. This is the main reason we want an adult that's happy with itself as opposed to a kitten.

I wonder if anyone here might have an adult cat that suits or know someone who does,

Regular rescues don't often get pedigree cats - it might be worth trying the Main Coon Cat Club to see if they know of any in need of a home. There are also a few rescues that specialise in breeds and pedigree cats.

You could always inquire with the local shelters and see if they have any Maine Coons available and ask to be put on a waiting list. But they are sought after as good family pets and aren't re-homed as often as other breeds because of their cost and docile nature.

There are many other breeds that you may like, such as Himalayans, persians, ragdolls and Scottish folds. BUT I will warn you, all long haired cats come at a price, and I don't just mean money wise.

If you really are set on a long hair then I can't fault you. I want one too and have done since I was at college. They are wonderful little cats!

I chose to adopt a mixed short hair from another teacher that had to go back to the UK, because otherwise she would've been euthanized because the shelter had no room.
She's a lovely little girl! Always full of spark and curiosity and 10 months on I'm so glad I said yes to that phone call to meet her.

So now I still want a maine coon. But I love the cat I have more. And if I get another phone call saying "it's you or an injection." I'd take that cat over any long haired, any day of the week.

As a Maine Coon owner, I can't imagine anyone giving one away! However, if I remember correctly from the research I did when I bought Badger and Tilly, Maine Coon breeders do sometimes have retired Queens (c 5yrs old, I think) for sale, so try contacting Maine Coon breeders to see what is available.
