I know that this topic comes up quite a lot and I have read other people's posts.
Unfortunately, my case is somewhat different to others I have read.
Floki is nearly 6 months old and I adopted him and his sister two months ago.
He immediately started having "accidents" about once every couple of weeks; I got in touch with the breeder who said that he was probably just adjusting to the new life.
He goes on extremely well with his sister, to the point where the call out to each other if they are not in the same room.
His toilet habits have now deteriorated; I have 3 trays for them to use, in two different locations, with different litter (which he has always shown to prefer). He always uses the trays for his pees but, out of the 3/4 poos he has in a day, one of them will either be on my wooden stairs, or under my shelves on the wooden floor. I know that he is not marking because he attempts to cover his poos.
His litter tray is always clean; I leave them during the day and they wait for me to get back home to do thier business, which is immediately cleaned by myself or my partner. In other words, whenever we hear them going ot the loo, we make sure we go and clean after they are finished.
I have also tried to give him the choice of covered and uncovered tray. Also, the trays are in a safe place with extit points.
Believe me, I have tried to see if there is any pattern that he is following and, to begin with, I thought his accidents were due to his sister annoying him when in the toilet, for example when they were playing and he needed to go.
I had to rule that out because I have seen him using the stairs when his sister was not aroud at all.
I would really appreciate it if someone could help me out. I am reaching desperation point!

I'm assuming you've taken him to the vets? It could be that he has a problem OR he had a problem and now associates those two spots as the correct place to go.
You could go to town on those areas with one of the many products which get rid of the smell so he no longer smells 'litter tray' in those areas. Then block them off using something you don't mind getting trashed (e.g. cardboard box cut to size). This will be a pain with the stairs, so you'll need something that is quick and easy for humans to move but difficult for a small determined cat. Maybe weight it down with something easily moved?
I don't know if you've had him neutered but that seems to solve most problems!
Good luck.

3 or 4 poohs a day?? That's an awful lot for one cat! I'd expect one a day. It sounds to me like he's got a tummy problem, and needs to see the vet. It might be that he's getting caught short and doesn't get to the litter tray in time.
