Desperately seeking advice - kitten with bad toilet habits

Post by Chantel »

Hi Everyone

Out of desperation, I turned to Google to see if I could find anything to help me with my problem and I was thrilled when I came across this site.

I work at a large animal feed manufacturing plant (in South Africa), and we have a lot of ferral cats on our premises. Fortunately our company manager agreed to have all of them neutered, and returned to the premisis (where they get well fed by certain staff members). Needless to say, there haven't been kittens for years ... until 4 weeks ago. One of the staff members picked up a beautiful ginger kitten (a FEMALE ginger, believe it or not), which was oddly enough very tame and lovable. We took her to the Vet for a general check up and deworming, and apart from being a bit under-nourished and de-hydrated, the vet was quite happy with her. The Vet said she looked to be about 3 months old.

We already have 3 cats at home, but I was so taken with her that I decided to take her home. My husband (who is a real cat lover) was also amazed at how tame and lovable she is. We are big animal lovers, and our animals all live in harmony. The big cats obviously weren't very impressed at first (which is to be expected), but mostly they simply ignore her.

We noticed the kitten had chronic diahroea, but we weren't too concerned as we assumed it was simply due to diet change. As we always do with a new kitten, we decided to keep her in the spare bedroom for a week while we were at work. We bought a new cat litter box and cat litter, and kitten food for her. The problem begins here ... she DOES not want to use her litter box. Instead, she poos under the bed, and behind the curtains, and recently under the bookshelf. Sometimes she even poos on the bed. We took her to the vet again, and he put her on a course of antibiotics and dewormed her again. Unfortunately her diarhroea got even worse, to the point that she would have accidents even while sitting on our laps.

The Vet then recommended we give her Hills Gastro Intestinal diet and probiotics (we use Protexion). We were so relieved to see that she started improving and gained wait over a period of a few days. However, the diorhoea has started again after just a week of being on the special diet. And STILL she won't use the cat litter box, and our house is REALLY smelling bad  Sometimes it seems her poos are improving and look more or less normal, then sometimes there is just a nasty puddle poo.

We try to encourage her to go outside, in the hopes that once she starts going to poo in the dirt, that she'll decide it is better. In the last week, she has learnt to enter and exit through the kitchen window, but she STILL poos in the bedroom. If the bedroom is closed, then she poos anywhere else.

We love her dearly, but I'm afraid that if this continues, we'll have to get rid of her (I want to cry just thinking about it), but it really is just getting too much! The house smells really bad, even though we disinfect each time we clean up.

Do you think anything can be done to stop this, or is she one of those cats that will always have bad toilet habits. She doesn't even try coving up her poos, even the one time I saw her go outside in the dirt. She just did her poo, and walked off without looking back. That alone makes me very nervous - like she has no pride?

Thanks in advance :)

Chantal, welcome to CC - I'm originally from SA myself (just outside Durban :D ) and well done for looking out for these ferels. Do you know which one mommy cat is so you can try catch her to have her spayed?

Chances are that your kitten actually doesn't realise what the cat litter is for as it's not used to it - but it will know all about sand, so bo be honest what I'd do is head to your local bottle store and get a few of the cardboard boxes that hold the 4x6pack dumpies / beers (you know which ones I mean) and then fill them with sand / soil from the garden and put them onto a black bin bag in case they leak. They're shallow enough for a kitten to get into.

Try that and also put any poo's she makes into the soil and cover it up for her.

Also when you feed her, shortly afterwards, rub her tummy and then put her onto the sand.

Hopefully she'll soon learn and once she gets the hang of the sand you can start mixing in litter and then gradually she can go onto all litter

Good luck and please do let us know how you get on

Just rereading your post - has she ever used the litter box - for wee's? I wonder if her tummy is hurting whenever she poo's so she's associating the litter box with pain hence not using it and having so many poo spots?

Try feeding her on a bland diet of rice and chicken and see if that helps settle her tummy?

Thank you so much for your reply. I will definately try using dirt from the garden in her litter box. I will try anything at this stage - we're absolutely desperate. She used the litter box only 2 or 3 times in the beginning, but now doesn't go near it. When I see her looking for a place to poo, I pick her up and put her in the litter box but unfortunately she jumps out again, and goes elsewhere (normally under the bed, or on the newspaper).

I think the mom and her kittens were from neighbouring factories, and were just passing through as we haven't seen them again. All the cats here at our factory have got clipped ears (they clip their ears at the SPCA when the get neutered so we know that they've all been done).

If she had an upset tummy she might be associating the litter box with unpleasant things happening, what Meriad is suggesting is a good idea, it's likely she just doesn't know what it's for and changing it for soil might make it feel more familiar.

Over here in the UK we have a product called Pro-Kolin (also called Pro-Bind) which is added to the food to help firm up poo and return the gut bacteria to normal, might be worth speaking to your vet to see if anything similar is available in SA, it worked wonders on one of my guys. It also might help to give her plain cooked chicken for a few days to give her gut a chance to recover before slowly reintroducing the food.

Chantal - just thinking about a few other things so just throwing a few more questions at you if you don't mind

- how long have you had her now
- what do you use to clean when she messes
- could you put a litter tray under the bed - not ideal I know but if that is where she feels safe?

I really do suspect that a lot of the issues are to do with the fact that she has an upset tummy, either because of pain or just not being able to get there in time.... and once you get that under control she probably will have more time to realise she needs the litter box

Definitely ask the vet about something like Pro-Kolin that Greenkitty suggested

Thanks greenkitty. The vet here recommended Protexion, which is a probiotic powder specially formulated to help with digestive / intestinal problems, and specifically diarhoea. And the Hills prescription diet that the Vet suggested is also specially formulated to help sort out gastro intestinal problems, which is why I'm so concerned that she still has an upset tummy. The food is darned expensive too, and it definately seemed to have worked for a few days. I was very disheartened when I saw her poos are so funny again. It doesn't help that we've got those old fashioned thick wooly carpets in the house - the smell is really bad. Can't believe such a small kitty can make such a stink! PHEW!!!!

We've had her now for 3½ weeks, and she's been on the special gastro intestinal diet and Protexion for 8 days now. She's had diarrhoea since the day we got her (with the exception of when it cleared up for about 2 days when she started her new diet).

My husband uses an anti bacterial cleaning spray to soak into the carpet where she poos, but this weekend the stench was so bad that he actually poured Jeyes Fluid (not sure if you have it in the UK?).

I think I must get another litter box, and leave it under the bed as well - thanks for the suggestion :)

To be honest - I suspect that your vet (same as many here in the UK) is pushing the Hills on you because they get a lot of commission from the company ;-)

if you look at the list of ingredients the first one is ground maize. Not only are many cats quite allergic to cereals, but chances are your little one has never really come across it so her tummy just can't deal with it Also, the meat content is fourth down the list; so probably not very high ;-) (they usually list ingredients in the order of highest to lowest quanity)

Personally I'd feed a mix of plain boiled chicken and rice or white fish and rice and see how she does on that. But only for a few days as that mix alone won't have the right nutrients for healthy development. Then very gradually introduce some cat wet food (which is better for cats anyway than dry) and see how she does. Just don't get kitten food as that will be too rich.

As for the Jeyes fluid (yup we do have it here); someone else should hopefully confirm but be careful with it as it apparently can be toxic to animals??? And don't use anything that contains bleach; a lot of cats will try and scent mark over bleach.

Also, if she hasn't been neutered yet, I'd keep her inside so she doesn't fall pregnant

I've got some WONDERFUL news!!! :D :D :D Yesterday when I got home from work, I put some sand / gravel from the garden in another litter box and placed it next to her other one in the spare bedroom. Kitty had a good sniff and feel, and when I looked again later I found she'd had a poo in it!!! YAY!!!! Under normal circumstances, I wouldn't be falling over myself with excitement, but I had become seriously despondent. This morning there was another poo in the new litter box, and NONE under the bed, or anywhere else in the house. So I'm so happy!!! Thank you for the wonderful advice, and hold thumbs that she'll continue to use the new litter box until she's comfortable to go outside to do her business.

I agree with you about the Vets and Hills Science Diet, but I was absolutely desperate and considering her diarhoea hasn't stopped I know that the special diet is not doing what it's supposed to. I'll keep trying other things until hopefully something will work for her. I defintely won't be buying that expensive Hills Science Diet again! I'll boil some chicken for her tonight.

I'm taking her next month to be neutered - definately don't want her falling pregnant.

Yipppee - fingers crossed that's all it was.

and best of luck with the diet and sorting that out. it probably will take a bit of time given that she's gone from feeding on all sorts of things out in the wild to proper cat food which is a lot richer for them.

Please do stay in touch and update every once in a while :D
