Herpes Runny Eye

Post by greenkitty »

It looks like Hector has the double whammy of cat fly viruses, I already knew he had Calici but the dermatitis on his nose has been responding to the L-lysine so it seems very likely he's carrying the Herpes virus too.

He's plagued by a runny eye, it's not infected, there's no white/yellow/green discharge coming from it, it's clear and watery like big tears. We've tried the usual drops from the vet but because it isn't bacterial it hasn't responded. The vet advised not to bathe it with anything so I'm just wiping it with a dry pad. Has anyone had any success with getting this cleared up?

Mr G also has Calici. He sometimes gets very weepy eyes too. They used to be very bad when he was living rough.

He has had very strong ABs before which seemed to help. Not sure exactly what they were, sorry.

Hope Hector is feeling better soon.

I'm the same, Lily has one eye that's almost constantly weepy. It doesn't seem to bother her, so I just clean her up from time to time, which she seems to quite like, considering she's such a grumpy cat most of the time...

It's hard to know if it's bothering him because he's been wearing the cone of shame for weeks now so he can't get at it. He does try and groom his head still but is just grooming the cone!! He doesn't mind it being wiped, he's very good boy and lets me do all I need to do with him.

I thought had posted earlier. Oh well, here it is again.

I saw the vet a couple of weeks ago. Laz always had a runny eye - clear tears. It started getting gunky. I kept cleaning it but it came back. The vet said it doesn't look infected, but if tear production is affected, either from damage (viruses etc) or the eyes are sunk in from age, the water evaporates leaving behind the proteins. You can get some cheap artificial tears, called Hypromellose 0.3% from Amazon. He said clean the eye with them once or twice a day. It lubricates the eye and also breaks down the gunk.

a 10ml bottle on Amazon is £1.29 delivered. I got a pack of 3 for £3.29 - he said it is better than eye wash.

Another thing is central heating can dry eyes out. Alice suffered from them in the winter. My old vet gave her a 2-week antibiotic jab 'just in case' she had an infection, butit didn't help. Then I read about dry eyes and bought a humidifier - the problem vanished. I need to get a new one as the air gets really dry with the wood burner going.

I have tried a humidifier in the past but because he moves between all the rooms it wasn't very effective, I do have these ceramic container things that hang on the radiators filled with water which help stop the atmosphere drying out too much, not sure how effective they are to be honest!!

I'll try the drops, I'm due a catch up with the vet today so I can mention it again to her, the main priority has been to try and get his nose healed which we're well on the way to doing, this stuff: http://www.vetuk.co.uk/dog-supplements- ... 0ml-p-3457" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; has proved really effective and seems very palatable.

My old Minnie got very runny eyes due to old age - I just wiped them with a damp flannel every couple of days to stop the gunk building up. She hated it.

Glad his nose is getting better, at least. :)

I've ordered the eye drops and will give those a go. I spoke to lovely Ellie the vet this morning, the next plan of attack is to drop his steroids back down to one a day, the hope is that now things are more under control we can try and get his immune system fighting the virus, it's been a balancing act between getting the outside of his nose to heal against keeping the inflammation inside under control. He's been off AB's for 2 weeks now too for the first time in about 4 years so we are making progress albeit slowly :)
