Neutered cat spraying

Post by Trudy »

Hi, I have 3 cats and the middle one aged 6 is spraying a lot around the house. I notice it's usually when he comes in from outside, he has a walk around then backs up to anything, door frame, toy box, laundry basket, tv cabinet, basically anything!! He gets on well with the other two and is happy and healthy so why is he spraying? Also I haven't noticed a smell to the spray like people say there is. Any advice gratefully received, thanks

first and most obvious question is - are all your cats neutered?

Yes all neutered. Oldest is male, middle one (the sprayer) is male, youngest is female

I suspect something outside is upsetting him, maybe a new cat in the neighbourhood, and he's expressing his stress by spraying indoors when he comes in. Tempting as it is, don't get cross with him, as it will only make him worse. Quietly clean it up, then spend some time reassuring him. He won't see this as rewarding his behaviour, but it may help him feel calmer in the house. Getting a Feliway diffuser may also help.

There are some more useful suggestions in this link.
