Is my cat going feral?

Post by Soozyfloozy16 »

I hope someone can help?
We got Moth over a year ago from an overcrowded family home. He lived with 3 dogs & 3 cats.
We finally felt that he'd settled in after a year. We moved last October, which he didn't like much. He now loves it here as we live in a more rural environment. We got a pup about 3-4 months back, he wasn't keen at first on him. They seem to have bonded more recently.
He is neutered, but since 2 new cats moved near us he's changed. He's started scenting around the house & meowing at night. He's been out for over a day now. I've tried calling him & tempting him with food, but he just looks at me like a total stranger! I don't know what to do?
He was mistreated before we got him. He went missing from his old owner & was found in a terrible state. Some disgusting excuses for teenagers had strapped a firework to his back & lit it. He was found in a terrible state, but recovered well from his ordeal physically (I'm not sure mentally).
Thanks for reading & I hope someone can help?!

Hi Soozy,

Poor old Moth, he has had a time of it! I wouldn't worry about him turning feral, there is something else going on here. Do the 2 new cats come into your garden?

My Purdy (a little skinny Minnie with the heart of a lion) is our 'Top Cat'. I can always tell when there is a strange cat in the area - Purdy goes all stroppy and pee's on the hob and microwave! When she was a kitten she was thrown out of a car (onto a friend's forecourt). But since then she has known nothing but love and security.

With what has gone on in Moth's young life, I think he is feeling really insecure and, perhaps is seeing you as part of the problem.

There are far more experienced people than me on CC. I'm sure there will be some who can help you. Don't give up on Moth, he really needs you, whether he knows that or not.

Thank you soo much for your advice Sue.
The good thing is that I can see why he's behaving the way he is.
He had an argument with one of the locals this morning (lots of vocalising), this cat has been at our window & in his face since we moved here. (9 months ago) we didn't have any issues with other cats before. He's always been quite nervous, but loves to snuggle up next to you for a cuddle.
He was at the back door around 6am meowing to come in. He had some food then started looking for an escape route. He's still in now, I'm determined to re familiarise him with his family, so far so good.
Thanks again

Sue :)

Hey there, agree with Sue (BobbysGirl) this definitely is because of the other cats. What is Moth's routine usually like; does he go out and for a wonder quite a bit or is he more of a home boy, content to potter in the safety of his own garden?

Just wondering if cat proofing is an option - provided your garden lends itself to being cat proofed of course?

But in the meantime, get yourself a super soaker and whenever you see the other cats aim the water spray in their direction - not at them directly, but either to the side of them or over them so they start staying away. Do you have a cat flap for Moth?
