Two of my cats Bluebell and Smoky live together downstairs and they have never shown the remotest sign of affection towards each other.
They rub along ok without fighting although there is the odd hiss and they always sleep at the opposite ends of their sofa, they won't share a food bowl or noses will get biffed. They occasionally sniff each others noses.
I had to take Bluebell in to the vets all day for tests (all negative thankfully), while she was gone the male cat Smoky who has known her since he was a kitten hunted for her, searched all over then started wailing really loudly and was very clingy until I bought her home.
They are now sleeping at opposite ends of the sofa ignoring each other. Who would have thought that they would miss each other so much when separated?

Re: Surprising cat friendship
Cats do fret sometimes when the other is gone, or even go into a depression, particularly if their companion is gone for good. Others, who rub along perfectly well, don't even notice when the other is gone! They're a funny and unpredictable bunch.
