Hi everyone, my 5 y/o Kitten Pie has been diagnosed with early HCM and as yet, his cardiologist sees no need for meds, just a check up in a few months.
I'm looking in to nutrition and I'm interested in starting him on a lower sodium diet, which may help reduce or slow down the progression of his disease.
I'm really bad with numbers and his current food (Whiskas complete dry food) contains 0.16mg of sodium selenite per 1kg of food. Can someone tell me how I figure out what percentage that is? We don't give him human food, just a little plain cooked chicken now and then, as a treat, and he always has plenty of water.
He's never taken to wet food, and I'm worried that we may be doing him more harm than good, by feeding him Whiskas.
Any advice on this topic would be really appreciated. We are on a very low income at the moment but if a more expensive food could help him, then I will of course do anything.
Thank you, in advance.

Re: Low sodium diet for early hypertrophic cardiomyopathy?
I had a cat with very severe HCM and she was on fortekor for many years and we had another 5 wonderful years but i lost her after taking her to my vet for cystitis and she was given 2 injections. I wish now i had given her oral meds as her little heart gave out just a few days later. She should never have been given such a large amount of strong drugs in her condition.
The vets just use injections now where it's more convenient and i believe the long lasting antibiotic injection Convenia is over used. I believe the second injection was metacam.
Just a warning...

Re: Low sodium diet for early hypertrophic cardiomyopathy?
I'm so sorry that you lost your cat, after she may have been given inappropriate medication. it's so hard to know what to do for the best, in these situations. All we can do is go on the medical advice we're given. Please try not to blame yourself, I'm sure we would all have done the same thing.
I will certainly make a note of this, should he need treating for any other condition.
Was your cat on a special diet, at all, or was she just taking the Fortekor?
Thank you.
