New Cat- very shy, advice please

Post by lynspop »

We have just yesterday picked up our new cat who is a gorgeous 1 year old male. He is settling in well and we know it will take time for him to get to know us but just looking for some general advice on helping a shy cat settle in.
We knew before we got him that he would take a while to get to know us as previous owners had told us he is unsure of new people.
It's very early days but I am hoping we are doing everything right- we are leaving him alone, not pestering him and allowing him to hide out and watch us from under the sofa etc. He is eating drinking and using his litter tray which is all great. He is also playing with toys but is very unsure of anything we do and the slightest movement sends him back under the sofa.
He loves treats and will take treats off us- we have both stroked him and he does like a fuss.
Our previous rescue cats have all been much more confident and have been sitting with us within a few days of bringing them home.
Can anyone advise anything else we can do to help him settle in? :)

I agree, it sounds like you're doing it just about right at the moment. Just keep it up. He doesn't sound too bad to me, compared to some, I think you'll find he'll be up on the sofa in a few days :)
