Cat has started peeing on anything but litter tray, help.

Post by whitetigress »

Hi all, sorry this will be a long post but thanks for any help/advice given. I got 2 Siamese sisters in November aged 3 and I was their fifth home so was determined to make this their final home. They settled in after a month and a change of litter. They were indoor cats. I got a kitten in Feb this year and they accepted him after a fortnight and no problems until July when I found fleas on them, loads of bother trying to sort that problem then I found cat pee in corner of kitchen but didn't know which cat did it (the male kitten was neutered by now) I disinfected the kitchen, tried different sprays to no avail, then there was poo in kitchen, I sorted that by putting a toy in that place and adding a third litter tray which solved the poo problem but not the pee problem! Then my boyfriend caught Princess peeing on my couch and after being caught she will blatantly squat to pee in front of anyone. Cleo and Teddy are always using the litter trays so I know it's princess now. I have tried everything I can think of, she has been checked by the vet who said she is fine and probably being territorial as I was giving my boyfriend attention so she wasn't getting as much attention. He suggested trying Feliway plug in which I did but to no avail, now she has peed on the draining board, on a tray on the bench, on a chair and on the step by the back door, I even let them go outside now to see if she preferred that but the other 2 still use the tray and she still pees where she shouldn't. She has lost weight even though she eats well and is happy in herself and vocal as usual. She is also sick sometimes. I really don't want to get rid of her as she is lovely in every other way. Please help as I am at my wits end now and I can't have a dirty house, especially as I have an eight year old daughter (who is fine with the cats and vice versa)

Did the vet do blood tests? And how much is she drinking?

The reason I ask is that sometimes what she's doing can be a symptom of conditions that affect the kidneys. It was one of the things we were told to watch for when our last cat was on diuretics.

Hi, thanks for reply. I'm not sure how much she is drinking as 3 share water bowl but the water does go down quickly and I remember thinking she was drinking a lot more. The vet didn't do any blood tests so I will book in with vets. Thanks for that :)

No worries. I hope they figure out what is going on with her. Until then, if you're able, it's worth shutting her in a separate room for one night, with her own litter tray and her own bowl of water, so you can see how much she drinks and wees during the night. That way you can tell the vet if she does seem to be drinking and weeing more.

The loss of weight while eating well really makes me think that the inappropriate peeing is a symptom of something else wrong.

I would agree that separating her for a few days to monitor how much she eats, drinks, uses the litter tray is a good idea. If she is also getting stressed by something then being in a safe room alone might help her recover.

Hope it all goes well and proves to be something easily treated.

Hiya, just an update (would have posted sooner but vets took over 2 weeks to get results and rang 7 times) Princess has kidney problems, got tablets for a fortnight, got to ring the vets in a week to let them know how she's doing. Hoping the tablets will help xx

What did the vet mean by kidney problems, as if they mean more CKD, that would mean tablets for longer than a fortnight.

They didn't say. Just said tablets for a fortnight then ring them to let them know how she is after a week. They decide from there if needs another blood test or to be on tablets for life.
