Kitten Weaning

Post by jayjay226 »

Hi,

I am currently trying to wean my 3 5 week old kittens. 2 are taking to it brilliantly and are snaffling it up like crazy however, one kitten is almost afraid of any form of solid food and quickly runs away in horror when presented with it!

I have tried holding her in place, I've tried dabbing it on her paws, I've tried trying to get her to lick it off the end of my finger but she just doesn't want it at all!!

Please does anyone have any helpful advice?

Many Thanks

Hi Jayjay and welcome :)

All kittens are different and there's usually a slow one, who just doesn't get the point, in every litter. She'll start to investigate solid food by herself eventually - and wonder what it is that she's missing - and then there'll be no stopping her, so you don't have to try and tempt her - just ignore her if she's not ready yet.

I know how you feel - I used to breed, and I agonised, ohhh nooo, they'll Never be weaned! Come three months and I never sold a kitten that wasn't greedily scarfing down its grub

Just leave her alone, Mother Nature will do the work for you - and all the best with them, bless them :)

5 weeks is still early for them to be used to eating, and as Lillith says, you always get one that is last. My vet says dry is easier for them to wean on

I have basically been making a gruel of KMR, soaked biscuits and wet food which the two eaters love. In fact, they've just been eating solid biscuits all by themselves this morning.

I guess I worry about Nugget as we call her as she was the runt of the litter hence the name.
