Cat has swollen eye :(

Yesterday my cat came home and his right eye was almost closed. It didn’t open fully at all. We let him out this morning and now the eye seems to have gotten worse. The eye is still almost shut but now there is some swelling above the eye. Is this common from a cat scratch? As he always seems to come home battered and bruised?

Vet, I think - scratches to the eye can be unpleasant.
