Hi,
I took this video of my cat resting. It seems like she is breathing really fast to me? She is purring but also sounds like she is breathing heavily? Not sure if this is normal or not. I noticed it the last week or so. She has been eating as normal, she's never had a big appetite anyway and she sleeps a lot but has seemed to sleep a bit more than usual but she does still have those mad half hours were she runs around the house. Here is the link to the video:

Any advice?
Thanks in advance!

I'm really sorry I never click links from people I don't know on their first post on a public forum, so I can't comment on your cat's breathing specifically. I have to keep my computer safe, please don't take it personally. But generally a purr is double rate breathing, and normal breathing at rest should be around 20 give or take quite a big margin, and anything higher than 35-40 when resting but not purring should be a concern. Hope that's some help.

No that's fine i get that, if i knew how to embed the video instead of linking it i would have done that. Now that she is sleeping she seems to be breathing slower and not making any sound now so i'm not sure. Sometimes it sounds like a purr and a sort of wheezing through the nose.

Ok so the main thing is, is it unusual for her? Sounds like that's a yes. Can you get a vet to call you in the morning if it's still not right? Obviously do take her to the emergency vet if you need to, they might be able to listen to her breathing on the phone and ask you the right questions to decide if sounds ok, can wait till tomorrow, or needs urgent help.

Yes i've never noticed it before but i am a worrier and sometimes have taken her to the vet if i feel she is not acting herself and she has turned out to be fine and i get a huge vet bill. It may just be that i have never noticed her doing it before, like she is asleep on my knee now and seems ok. Her gums are a bit pale too i think so i don't know if that's related. I am going to call the vets anyway in the morning.

breathing in cats is pretty faster than humans , and it will vary greatly according to the activity so i wouldn't depend on that .
but instead you can check her mouth gum color , if it is pink or rose then for starter she is not anemic , if anemic the gums will appear white and pale .
you can also check the daily activity routine , i mean if there is a concern that the heart or chest is affected the cat will be easily fatigued , breathless and will avoid exercising , playing .
also if the cat to be thyrotoxic or diabetic it could be known from the increased water consumption and urination , these states could make the cat tachypneic too .
i also checked the link molly and it is safe , it is pretty understandable why anyone shouldn't open unknown links , i just got a ransomware virus couple of months ago that encrypted all of my personal data , so it is better safe then sorry , but in these circumstances i use the mobile to open the unknown links , it is pretty much safer than opening it on a pc .

i missed that part about the gums , well if you feel it is pale + fatigue + breathlessness i guess it is better be safe to check the vet and do a cbc , anemia at first is easier to be adressed then late and it will spare you the huge vet bill .Hannahb92 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 04, 2021 9:54 pm Yes i've never noticed it before but i am a worrier and sometimes have taken her to the vet if i feel she is not acting herself and she has turned out to be fine and i get a huge vet bill.
