Femoral Head Removal (Ostectomy)

Post by Clareb67 »

Hi everyone. I’m new here. My 11 yr old cat, Carrot (yes, he’s ginger) is 1 week post FHO after a fracture dislocation which wouldn’t stay in place. We don’t know if he fell from height or was hit by a car.

So, I’m interested to hear how other cats have healed from this and what to expect. He’s still housebound for his own safety & has a pronounced limp when fully mobile. We live in a village but the lane can be very fast so I’m understandably nervous of the day he’s allowed out (potentially at the end of this week).

Does anyone have any firsthand experience please? Thanks for reading x

My cat Lucy had what I was told was a femoral head removal, but turned out to be femoral neck removal nearly 4 years ago. She needed room rest initially followed by limited access to the rest of the house for about 9 weeks, she didn't have a limp after (but did before, hence the surgery), but did hold her leg funnily for a while after, she did develop another health issue 7 weeks after surgery which put her recovery back slightly as she was hospitalised for 4 days so had a bit of muscle wastage after. she did do a couple of naughty things during recovery but didn't seem to suffer any long term effects from it, and i was only commenting the other day what positions she sleeps in bearing in mind she doesn't have a full hip joint on that side anymore. Hopefully his will be as smooth

Last year my cat fell from a two-story house. Something happened to her foot and she had to have surgery. I was so worried that I stopped sleeping at night. On the Internet I read about good ways to deal with it and I got better. After the operation I was very happy that everything was fine with my cat. At first she didn`t walk much, but two weeks later she was much better. Everything is fine with us now
