Stomatitis

Post by Willow22 »

My 5 year old girl who is an indoor cat was diagnosed with Stomatitis in December last year by one vet and Gingivitis by a another in the same practice.
She was given oral antibiotics and a painkiller which she couldn't tolerate because her mouth was simply too painful.
She was then given a long acting antibiotic and steroid injection . not ideal for the type of infection but was better than none according to the vet.
She has had these 3 times this year and can eat normally afterwards. The minute these wear off were back to square one . Not eating but starving .She has lost so much weight its distressing.
She has everything from warm chicken to every pate tin . Fish etc.crying for food and unable to eat .Has anyone else encountered this condition.? W x

Both terms mean inflammation in the mouth, has anyone talked about a dental scale and polish, tooth resorption, FORLS, possible extractions? If they think her teeth look fine, have they suggested a sedation to check her mouth properly and x-ray? Have they ever examined her under sedation? Also, have any blood tests been done, or any tests for underlying conditions?

I was under the impression that steroids shouldn't be used for those conditions as they can make them worse. I've had success with using Butchers Classic cat food for calming down gingivitis, might be worth a try

Hi Willow
I adopted a cat with Stomatitis. People, as well as some Vets do not understand How to deal with this and steroids is Not the answer.

A cat with Stomatitis will continue being in horrible pain and not eating until ALL its teeth are removed.
This means x-rays, hospital stay, antibiotics, and fluids administered at Vet Hospital.
If even one root is left this disease will continue.

Some vets are not capable of providing this kind of dental care. I had to find a Veterinary Dental Specialist to be sure this was taken care of completely. It cost $3,500 for the works but it was the best thing I ever did for my Meezy. This was in 2008 when I adopted her from the rescue I worked at in Arizona. I found the Dental Veterinarian for the Big Cats at the Arizona Zoo. Steroids are a very bad band-aid and can make curing this more difficult, although without full extraction this is the only alternative to pain.

Please look into finding a qualified Veterinarian with knowledge of full extraction or a Dental Specialist. It will be so with it.

It's such a cheap grain-free too, and as far as I could tell pretty decent considering the cost, better than the better known more expensive brands and similar priced supermarket brands. Only downside is the size of the tins, unless you have multiple cats or one like my first with hollow legs. I wonder what it's got that makes it so special!

Yes, it's a shame it is only in such large tins, they did do 100g trays for a while but only ever found them in poundstretcher, shame they have never either brought them back or made pouches, as 400g tins are hard to get through

I think the small portions were different composition if I remember right?

I tried freezing and it was no go, the jelly turns to water and the meat turns grey and nobody thinks it's edible. Even mushing it into a pate didn't help. In hindsight maybe I should have kept Boo on it and put the rest of the tin out for the foxes when Molly went on her diet. There is never a shortage of what-ifs.

Thank you for your advice. My girl's mouth is seemingly better although she is still acting as if something is wrong with her mouth . as if something is stuck in it. She's not been eating and had to be admitted for fluid's yesterday as she was dehydrated. She has gone from 5kg down to under 3 .they repeated her bloods and scanned her abdomen. Got a call saying there is a mass there. I am devastated.. I am in shock. I have to get her to eat and drink water although when she looks at both she walks away doing this chewing movement. As I only found this out yesterday I am still taking it all in.I have many questions which I will deal with tomorrow. Vet says she wouldn't survive surgery as she has lost so much weight.

So sorry Willow, such a young girl too and a huge worry. Does the vet have anything else to offer to get some weight on her for surgery?

Seems like horrible distressing and sad news is just pouring down at the moment.

I'm so sorry to hear that, have the vets offered something like steroids to try and help shrink it and hopefully get her eating?

Thank you for your replies. The vet said the fluids my girl had would keep her hydrated for two days. That was Tuesday and she is still not touching food or drinking water. She had a long acting steroid injection about a week ago along with an antibiotic one and none have made the slightest difference. She is losing so much weight and I am really worried. Normally her steroid injection allowed her to eat when she was being treated for Stomatitis but this was a different one and will be in her system for another two weeks.

I am posting an update on my precious girl . She was getting thinner and the tumour bigger . She declined rapidly in the weeks following her diagnosis . She was back and forth to the vet frequently for fluids. steroid injections etc. On Thursday she fell over getting out of her litter tray and collapsed on the floor. My darling girl fell asleep peacefully on Thursday evening at the vets leaving me absolutely heartbroken . She had her 6th Birthday a few weeks ago and I thought her and I had many years to spend together and until 30th of December last year was so lively and healthy. Her sibling is crying around the house looking for her as they loved each other so much. This house is empty and sad . She was a beautiful girl with the loveliest nature .

I am so sorry. It is hard to lose any beloved cat, but doubly so when they are young with so much life ahead of them. I hope there is comfort in knowing you did everything possible for her, and helped her to slip away painlessly and peacefully at the end.
