Hi! I need some advice. My 14 year old cat has a 4X5cm lump (cyst) on neck filled with brown/yellow fluid as per 2 biopsies. Not malignant. Also has a heart murmur. He’s been taking thyroid medication for a few years now (Tapazole). Oncologist suggest iodine treatment. I found natural products online that could help reduce this cyst without other treatments. Wondering if I should try these or just go with the iodine treatment right away? It’s a very expensive treatment though and no reassurance it will be healed. Someone out there must have been through this with their cat or someone out there must’ve tried those products!
Any advice is welcomed. We love him so much and don’t want to lose him!

The radio iodine treatment is a cure for hyperthyroidism, rather than for cysts, unless the cyst is caused by the HT? If not, it is very unlikely to make any difference to that particular problem, but should mean he no longer needs medication for the HT, and the stress on his heart may also be reduced, if that is HT related. I would rely on advice from my vet, rather than muddle things still further with unproven “natural” treatments.

Roadioactive iodine is worth every penny, and where we went wasn't the cheapest we could have had. If your cat is suitable for it and if you can scrape the funds together or if the cat is insured, I would call it a gold standard no-brainer, just do it. My girl had her treatment 2 years ago wen she was 12. For us there was really no choice as administering meds is not an option at all but I'm glad our hand was forced this way.

The only down side you need to be aware of, and also why a comprehensive set of tests beforehand is so critical. The raised blood pressure from the HT that eventually causes heart failure and blindness, this can also mask chronic kidney disease that is so common in middle aged and increasingly older cats. So curative treatment can reveal this kidney disease. The full tests will assess for this and your vet and the specialist centre vets should guide you. But mild kidney disease is easily managed with the right food and very minor compared to HT.

Is the heart murmur related to the hyperthyroidism?


But one thing for sure, I would not be trusting untested herbals on a serious endocrine condition.
