Poor Mr Grey
We knew that this trip to the vet was going to be tough, but we were not quite prepared for how it turned out.
We have known for a little while that Mr Grey had problems with his teeth. We thought we would wait until his annual check up to get them looked at. Our fears were confirmed that he needs at least 5 teeth out. The vet suspects calcivirus
To add to his woes we have recently noticed a small scab on his nose. Vet suspects a small tumour
Lisa (vet) advises to remove it while it is still small. We have looked back over photos. It is only there in very recent ones so hopefully we have caught it early.
He is booked in for next Tuesday to have both done at the same time
Poor lad. Fingers crossed for him please.

Re: Poor Mr Grey
I do hope things turn out well for Mr Grey. Let's hope the tumour is in early stages. It sounds very much like it is.
I have everything crossed for your little lad. Let us know how he gets on.

Poor Mr Grey indeed, but hopefully he will be all the better for it, and as you say, you've caught any potential problems early. All paws here crossed for him. xx

Re: Poor Mr Grey
He should be able to cope with less teeth, although will feel a bit funny for a while.
If the tumour is visible and on the surface, that's a better sign than it being somewhere hidden and internal. It is probably a basal cell carcinoma, which, like in humans, is the most common form of skin tumour. In both cases it doesn't metastasize (spread), and is benign even if malignant (if that makes sense) as long as you remove it.

Re: Poor Mr Grey
Hi everyone
What a traumatic day
I went to pick up Mr Grey
He has had all but his canines removed.
He has had a nick out of his nose, and the vet took a small sample from the other side of his nose - he has always had a dark spot and we are thinking it's probably pigment, but she wants to be safe.
In the car on the way home he rubbed his nose against the carrier. He HATES travelling. He caused it to bleed.
I was on my own when I got back and Mr G tried bolting. Fortunately our garden is cat proofed. He would not let me get close enough to have a look at it.
I rang the vets, who said that if the bleeding had slowed/stopped,it was probably ok, but to try to get a look at the stitches. It's quite difficult to see them now because of the dried blood
We decided to feed the poor boy. He ate some wet food, and seems a lot happier now. We are going to have a good look later once he settles down and decide whether to take him back in the morning. We would rather not if we can avoid it.
He doesn't seem bothered by his teeth (or lack thereof!) at all
Thanks for your thoughts

Re: Poor Mr Grey
I am pleased to hear that everything went well and hope that Mr Grey makes a full recovery very soon. As for his poor nose, I know I can't see the damage, but I do know that cuts to noses or ears
bleed alarmingly more than the size of the cut would suggest.
I remember one holiday my sister and I had on a canal boat. We took our dog Bonnie. She had a small nick in her ear and one night she woke us up by shaking her head so much the boat rocked! When we turned on the light there was blood up one wall, across the ceiling and down the other side. It looked like a massacre! All we could find was one tiny cut!
I hope this is the case with your little man and that he is none the worse for the trauma of the day. I wish the same for you. Hugs and gentle fusses to Mr Grey

Re: Poor Mr Grey
Glad the worst is over for you both. As for the cut, I'm sure it will scab up and be fine. It's always a worry whether to leave it or clean it up and risk it bleeding again.

Re: Poor Mr Grey
the skin on the nose is very thin, isn't it, but there's nothing vital underneath, so I'd leave well alone
cats are amazing about losing their teeth, aren't they - when you think of all the fuss us humans make about a filling or two

Re: Poor Mr Grey
Thanks everyone
We were concerned that he had broken the stitches - the cut on the side with the tumour was quite deep. The other side was just a shaving - enough for a biopsy.
We will take a look tomorrow morning. We will not take him back unless we think it is essential. As an ex farm cat he hates being confined and transported about
He does not seem at all bothered about his mouth

Hopefully he's just caught the surface and the stitches are fine - as has been said, if it's stopped bleeding it's probably OK. Glad he's home and eating - the worst is over! xx

Re: Poor Mr Grey
I was so surprised how quickly Noodley and Tig bounced back after they had their teeth removed, I thought if a human had that many teeth removed they'd be moaning and groaning for weeks!
Hope his nose is ok, fusses from me if you can get close enough x

Re: Poor Mr Grey
We got a good look first thing this morning.
There are certainly some stitches intact so we have decided not to put him through the trauma of going back. We recon worse case scenario the scar will be more noticeable - much as we love him, he has always has a certain .....umm .....how do we say it.........rugged farm cat look to him so a few more scars aren't going to be a problem.
Hopefully he will leave his nose alone now to let it heal as best it can. We should have the biopsy results by the time we take him for his follow up visit on Tuesday.
He has not shown and concerns at all with his mouth
Poor lad. He has coped so well with all of this. It's sometimes easy to forget his humble beginnings
